Name of Child: Date: Home Care After Cardiac Cath (Cardiac Catheterization) #712 Name of Child: Date: Doctor: Telephone number: Prescriptions given: Your child had a cardiac catheterization. The catheterization site(s) is: p right p left It is normal for the IV site to bother your child today. It may feel better if you put a warm moist cloth on it for 20 minutes. Take special care for the next 24 hours: Your child may be unsteady, dizzy, or sleepy. Watch your child carefully to keep him from getting hurt. Watch your child every time he uses the toilet or showers. Do not let your child ride a bike, swim or hold sharp objects. Your child may shower, but he or she should not take a tub bath for the next 48 hours. Keep the catheterization site clean and dry. Change the Band Aid if it becomes wet or soiled. Those old enough to drive should not drive until 24 hours after the catheterization. Tomorrow morning you may take the Band-Aid off the catheterization site. Your child may return to school on Ask your child s doctor when he or she can return to active play (like bike riding, team sports, and playground play). 1 of 5
Call the doctor right away if, in the next 24 hours, your child has one of these problems: p If the catheterization site bleeds more than a Band-Aid can hold, have your child lie down, put a clean cloth on the site, press down, and call the doctor right away. p If your child has a fever over 101 degrees F. (Do you have a fever thermometer? How do you use it?) p If your child has a lot of pain. p If your child cannot drink or cannot keep down fluids. p If the leg or arm with the catheterization site becomes very cool, pale, numb, or painful. p If the catheterization site gets red, hot, puffy, or drains fluid or pus. p If the IV site becomes red or swollen. Now that you ve read this: p Tell your nurse or doctor how you will care for your child s catheterization site. (Check when done.) p Tell your nurse or doctor how you will care for your child s IV site. (Check when done.) p Tell your nurse or doctor how you will care for your child the next 24 hours. (Check when done.) p Tell your nurse or doctor what problems to look for and who you would call if your child has a problem. (Check when done.)
