PLACE MAY 2013 COMMENTS FROM THE MAYOR By Charles Jessup 2013 City Election Scheduled May 11, 2013 is Election Day in Meadows Place. Early voting times are on the website. I urge everyone to participate in our political process; it is our right and our responsibility. Situs Addresses - Finally, Meadows Place is in Meadows Place! In a major breakthrough, the City of Meadows Place, working diligently with the Fort Bend Central Appraisal District (CAD), has managed to change the situs addresses of Meadows Place homes from Stafford to Meadows Place. This will pay huge dividends for us in the future. Situs is a legal term stemming from a Latin word that simply means location, or site, of property. Our homes now show a situs, or location, in Meadows Place. It has been very difficult to promote our city, or get businesses to move into it, when it is listed as part of another city. Hopefully we have that corrected now. Just in case, please check your tax records to make sure the address on YOUR home has been corrected. If not, then please contact the CAD and request a change. The other address, which, unless you have had it changed, is the CAD mailing address of record, and probably still reads Stafford. It is a simple process to change the mailing address but it must be requested by the homeowner. I hope each of you will take the few minutes to change it. It is a very simple process, all you have to do is fax your request, along with your address and signature, to the CAD, fax # is 281-762-9666. If you do not have a fax, please feel free to bring your request to City Hall and we will fax it for you. Then, your home and your mailing address will be in Meadows Place. Finally. Symposium More big news. The City of Meadows Place has been asked to speak before the nation s largest Water Reuse Symposium this fall. For over a year now, visitors from all over the country have come to see for themselves the who, what, how and what it took, for a small city, with such limited resources, to put together a full system water reclamation project like ours. Did You Know?... Did You Know... May 2nd is the National Day of Prayer? Since 1952 Americans from various religious backgrounds gather in prayer for the United States. Meadows Place is one of the many cities in Ft. Bend County that participates in this historic practice whose beginnings can be traced back to George Washington. Please feel free to join in Tuesday, May 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. Tim Shoulders and other volunteers from Sugar Grove Church of Christ will set up chairs in the grove of trees behind Meadows Place City Hall. Hope to see you there. Did You Know... People are still talking about the first Meadows Place Concert at the Lake? What a great event it turned out to be. Lawn chairs, kids running around having fun, neighbors catching up with friends they hadn t seen in a while and the Revolving Doors - a fantastic Rock, Country, Rhythm and Blues band with a great playlist. Several of our neighbors got excited while watching because the band has a Meadows Place connection. On the keyboard was Bryan Bilocura, who is the music minister at a local church and lives in Meadows Place. Other band members include Mark Lee (our CenterPoint land rep), Chris Klein, Charlie Lillja, Scott Krueger, Justin Becker, and Julian Voller. Thanks for all the good comments about our Concert at the Lake. Events like this play a role in keeping Meadows Place a great place to live. Thanks Monya! Did You Know... while at the concert, a resident who moved to Meadows Place about a year ago, told me how pleased and impressed he was at all the steps we have taken to separate ourselves from Houston/Harris County? He said if we continue, it will really increase the value of his property. As we shared thoughts on the matter, one idea he really liked was selectively replacing our standard light poles with a decorative one, similar to the decorative poles in the park only street pole size. What do you think? Send me an e-mail if you think I should look into this with CenterPoint. Did You Know... the information was a bit overwhelming at a recent hearing on water tables and subsidence? For years, the Ft. Bend Subsidence District and the United States Geological Survey have gathered and compiled data from hundreds of wells around the county. I learned there are parts of Ft. Bend County where the level of the land has dropped over six feet in the past twenty years. Though our ground may shift and move, Meadows Place is not one of those areas - and thanks to the Subsidence Reduction measures we, and the cities around us have taken, we never will. They plotted the change in the water levels before and after the subsidence measures were taken and it was amazing. The land will not return to previous levels but the water tables have, and that will stabilize the region. Including Meadows Place. Whew Did You Know... School Board Members Dave Rosenthal and Jim Rice came to Meadows Place last month to discuss the changes we might expect from the new Superintendent, Charles Dupree? We also discussed funding changes and what it might mean to Meadows Place. Having a strong relationship with FBISD is very important to our city and our school. Did You Know... a photo of Dakota Mills pitching Dulles to victory over Kempner, which put them in to playoffs, was featured in the Chronicle? Congratulations to the Dulles Vikings baseball team but especially to Dakota and all the players from Meadows Place for a great year. The band called "Scottsdale Drive" won the battle of the bands competition at the Amped Music Showcase on Saturday, April 13, 2013? The competition was held at the PARC on Eldridge Drive and included four other bands, all of which were very talented. There was a great turnout for the AMPED event and for their debut performance, Scottsdale Drive came out on top by putting on a great show and winning the most votes. The members of Scottsdale Drive are: Christina The Voice Garcia, Alex Huffman, Keegan Huffman, Justin Nguyen, Michele Pless and Michael Soo. Christina, Alex, Keegan and Michele are all Meadows Place residents. Their manager, Anthony Ontiveros is also a Meadows Place resident. Talent of all types abounds in Meadows Place. 2
(Comments From The Mayor continued from page 1) Our lake/water reclamation project has been featured in two of the nation s more prestigious water and wastewater publications which I am sure added to the reasons Meadows Place was chosen to participate. The abstract we submitted is titled No Community Is Too Small To Realize Great Benefits from Water Reuse and was co-authored by myself and Ben Gould of Ashbrook Simon-Hartley with whom we worked to develop the filtration system we needed. This September, I will meet Public Works Director Dan McGraw in Denver, Colorado at the 28th annual Warter Reuse Symposium whose mission it is to advance the beneficial and efficient uses of high-quality, locally produced, sustainable water sources for the betterment of society and the environment through advocacy, education and outreach, research, and membership. Meadows Place is proud to be part of that mission and will try to help other small cities as they look toward their futures as it regards to water reuse and reclamation and hopefully help them move forward with their own projects. Meadows Place has a very professional PowerPoint presentation which should represent Meadows Place well. I could not be more proud of our little city, and I know you are too. Homeowner Water Conservation Efforts As water becomes more and more regulated, and expensive, I believe it will be necessary to have as many options as we can, both as individual homeowners and as a city. I have scheduled a meeting with the water conservation experts with the Fort Bend County Agricultural Extension Agency and will be working with them to provide us with information and possibly come to the city to conduct an educational presentation for the residents of Meadows Place. These tips can help your family have a safe and enjoyable park visit in all city parks: Only use the parks during posted hours Obey all posted warnings and signs Do not allow children to play unsupervised Do not carry a purse or valuable items. Secure items out of sight before you arrive at the park Avoid walking alone Carry a cell phone Be aware of your surroundings at all times Tips for Staying Safe While Traveling Home Frequently check your rear-view mirror to see if you are being followed. If you are being followed, do not drive home. Instead drive to the nearest police station, fire station, or other place of safety If you believe you are being followed but are unsure, make three consecutive left hand or right hand turns. If you are still being followed, do not drive home Remember, it is important to know where you are so police officers can respond if needed. Know your direction of travel If you have a cellular phone, call 9-1-1. Try to get a good description of the vehicle that is following you including the vehicle's make, color, and license plate number if possible Do not try to be a hero. Meadows Place Lifeguards Congratulations! AGAIN!!! For a record third year in a row, the Meadows Place Lifeguard staff received the Platinum International Aquatic Safety Award from Jeff Ellis and Associates for the summer 2012 season! This award is given only to the top 10% of the best pools registered with Jeff Ellis. Our lifeguards have always given outstanding service to the City of Meadows Place, but this is the first time we have had the Platinum recognition for 3 consecutive years. Residents may purchase new Tennis Court access cards beginning in May at City Hall, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm. Only residents of Meadows Place may purchase a card. A driver s license AND water bill verifying Meadows Place residency must be shown to purchase the access card. Access cards are $50 per card, maximum 2 cards per family. Cards are valid through May; old cards will be deactivated at the end of May. All tennis players must have access card with them while on the courts. A maximum of three (3) guests allowed per card and all guests must be accompanied by a resident. Do not prop open the gate at any time or allow access to the courts to anyone without a Tennis Court access card. Normal weekday operating hours begin Tuesday, June 11th. See a detailed list of pool operating days and hours in the Parks and Recreation section of the newsletter. New wristbands will need to be purchased for pool access for the Summer 2013 season. Wristbands can be purchased at the pool starting May 18th. Pool activities for this summer include adult lap swim, swim lessons, water aerobics, Bare Foot N Friday and Splash Night at the pool! New this summer - Tattoo Tuesdays and Freezy Pop Fridays. Congratulations to my wonderful lifeguard staff for receiving another Platinum award from Jeff Ellis and Associates. This is our third year in a row to receive the platinum award, and I am so proud of the staff for being in the highest ranking. We plan on working hard for another platinum award this summer! I look forward to seeing everyone at the pool! Swim Lessons What: Swim lessons Where: Meadows Place Community Pool Who: Classes are for ages 5 and up. Students will be grouped according to age. Time: 5:15-6:00 OR 6:15-7:00 (45 minute classes) Tuesday-Friday (8 classes) When: Session 1: June 18 - June 28 Session 2: July 9 - July 19 Session 3: July 30 - August 9 *Sessions last 2 weeks. Cost: $50 per student/session There will be a maximum of 5 students per class. Registration is required. Forms can be picked up at the pool. Payment is required at time of registration. Checks can be made payable to City of Meadows Place. Adult Lap Swim Additional Times!
