BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL MARCH 2017 Message from Mr. Mork March is an exciting yet hectic time for students as they gear up for warm weather, outdoor fun, and their final trimester of the school year. They are participating in solo and ensemble, our spring play Arsenic and Old Lace, and spring sports. They might also be looking forward to prom and graduation, or simply looking forward to warmer weather and spending time outside. With the end of the year in sight, some of our students have been motivated to start setting goals to help them finish strong. Others, though, may be beginning to feel overwhelmed and stressed as the pace of their classes and social expectations picks up during this time of year. Please encourage your student to stay on top of their assignments and responsibilities so they don t fall behind. We suggest talking to your student about time management so they can continue being successful as the academic year comes to an end. 1. Set a schedule that includes schoolwork, school activities, family time, and social life. 2. Don t procrastinate. If you do, you ll soon find your schedule is in disarray. 3. Know your limits, it is ok to say no or not now. This may help keep your stress levels to a minimum. I hope you find this newsletter to be both informative and enjoyable to read. The newsletter is an important communication tool with parents and the community. Page 2 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Athletic Director s Corner @BerlinIndians Be sure to visit our High School web page, Athletic Calendar, r-school, to see the most up to date schedule for all Berlin sports teams. Under the Athletics tab, you will also find an ECC site list with a GPS address for all conference locations. Spring athletes need to always be prepared for each of the four weather seasons: Fall (bring layers), Winter (bring inside clothes/shoes), Spring (bring rain gear), Summer (bring sunscreen). Each day brings different weather, and your son/daughter need to be prepared for it all. All practice/game changes are announced during the school day to the students. Parents, please check r-school before calling the office in regards to game cancellations/changes. Please remember to be positive at our sporting events towards players, coaches, officials, visitors, and your fellow Berlin Indian fans. If your son or daughter is playing a spring sport and has not participated during the fall or winter sports, now is the time to start checking to make sure they have everything on file to participate in sports: physical or alternate year card, concussion test (good for two years), concussion agreement and insurance waiver. Come join the Parent Meeting with Mr. Mork on Monday, March 27, 2017, starting at 6:30 p.m., in Room A101, located off of the High School Commons. A time to discuss positives, concerns, or whatever, with Mr. Mork.

Page 4 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Science Department Four students, Andrea Briese, Chris Werch, Owen Reich, and Emma Dakoske, accompanied Mr. Reich to the annual Marshfield Clinic Science Conference. The conference focuses on the future technologies that will affect our lives, particularly as they relate to health care. Speakers included the chair of UW-Madison Hospital s Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. The Berlin attendees also toured the St. Joseph Hospital s morgue where students saw organs damaged by disease as well as the method of performing an autopsy. Some saw the DaVinci robotic surgery machine in action while others learned splinting and casting techniques for common sports injuries. Mr. Reich enjoys this conference because he is able to learn about cutting edge technologies, but more importantly because it helps his students see what is possible in the merging fields of technology and health care. He thanks the district for its support in sending him and students to this conference for the last 11 years.
BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Page 5 Music Department The Berlin High School Music Department will celebrate Music In Our Schools Month with a unique concert on March 14 th in the high school theatre. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m., a departure from its usual start time! With the Concert Choir traveling to NYC in April, and having the wonderful opportunity to perform at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine during a special week, our concert program will center around sacred music of various time periods and styles. The Mixed Choir, who is not traveling, has also been studying this realm of music history and starts the concert with four pieces including a rousing gospel tune. The Concert Choir then takes the stage with the six pieces they will perform in the cathedral. These include a work by Russian composer Tchesnokov, a tender newer work based on a text from a concentration camp in WWII, and a spiritual. A special treat for the choir is a guest cellist (more below) who will accompany the choir on a beautiful prayer in French composed by Faure. Following the choir s 6:30 p.m. performance, there will be a short intermission followed by the Concert Band performing a four-movement work by Frank Ticheli that features music of the Shakers. After this work is finished, the Wind Ensemble will perform a monumental work by David Maslanka entitled O Earth, O Stars. We are excited to have a guest musician performing with this group Mr. Tom Hanlon, from Washington D.C., on cello. This six-movement work features the Wind Ensemble in a variety of styles, parts for solo flute, cello, harp and piano. This will be a truly fantastic evening of music! Come and enjoy after the spaghetti supper!!
