AMERICAN HELLENIC SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS 2018 AWARDED BY THE AMERICAN HELLENIC COUNCIL
The American Hellenic Council The Mission The American Hellenic Council is a non-partisan political advocacy organization. Our goal is to promote democracy, human rights, peace, and stability in Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, with an emphasis on Greece and Cyprus, by informing the American public and elected officials about on-going issues and conflicts in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as advocating for stronger U.S.-Greece-Cyprus relations. Eligibility Please carefully read the rules before proceeding. Any applicant that does not meet the following criteria will not be considered for the scholarship. 1. Be a resident of Southern California specifically residing anywhere within the northern limits of Santa Barbara to the southern limits of San Diego and within the eastern limits of Palm Springs. 2. Be an undergraduate student (sophomore, junior or senior) currently enrolled, full time, in an accredited College or University, and who will be fully enrolled during the 2018/2019 academic year. 3. Must have a minimum 3.5 GPA, (maximum 4.0 scale) 4. The applicant, or a member of his/her immediate family, must be a paying member of the American Hellenic Council or become one. This form is for 2018 only. Previous winners of AHC s scholarships are not eligible. Procedure Please read carefully the rules and the criteria before proceeding. The application of each candidate will have the name, home address, and anything else that may allude to identity, redacted. This is done to ensure that each candidate is evaluated purely on merit (blind review).
The candidates will be assigned a number with which they can be identified when the review process is over. Once the application period is closed, all applicants will be submitted to an external panel of professors who will rank each candidate The external panel will base their evaluation on the criteria established on the Application Form. The Application Form must be accompanied by: 1. An official complete transcript from the applicant s school 2. An essay of 800-1,000 words in which the applicant will outline his/her educational goals, and his/her involvement in the cultural, social, and educational life of the Greek American community 3. Two letters of recommendation from a professor, coach or advisor on the school s letterhead. No letter from a family member will be accepted.
