Clendening Library & Museum and the KUMC Archives Exhibits: Civil War: Women & Medicine During the Civil War women were instrumental in keeping the home and hearth together as well as tending to the sick and injured in hospitals and camps. They not only read the letters from their loved ones, they later published accounts of their experiences during the war. Visit the Clendening History of Medicine Library to see some of their works and read their experiences. Georgia Holland Research lab The research in this lab focuses on improving the health and wellness of people with chronic disease or disability by assessing body composition, muscle strength and endurance, and aerobic fitness. Contact: Greg Unruh, MD, gunruh@kumc.edu Civil War Medicine: The Battle of Westport The Battle of Westport, sometimes referred to as the Gettysburg of the West, was fought on October 23, 1864, in Kansas City, Missouri, during the American Civil War. This was one of the largest battles fought west of the Mississippi River with over 30,000 men engaged. The 77 th formed in 1942 at the KU Medical Center, and saw action in North Africa, Sicily and Europe during the United States involvement in World War II.
