INFORMATION FOR ALL VISUAL ARTS APPLICANTS APPLICATION PROCESS The application for an audition to Visual Arts is a two-step process. ROUND 1: A printed copy of all items in the portfolio must be submitted by all applicants. An envelope with all required documents (refer to portfolio requirements) must be dropped off in person to Cardinal Carter, no later than Monday, October 30, 2017. Late submissions will NOT be accepted. An adjudicating panel will evaluate all portfolios. A letter with your results will be sent in early November and it will indicate whether you are invited to Round 2 the Audition Day on Thursday, November 23, 2017. ROUND 2: Audition Day Thursday, November 23, 2017. Only successful applicants from Round 1 will be invited to Audition Day. All applicants will receive follow-up letters by early November indicating whether they are invited to Round 2(Audition Day). Round 1 All Visual Arts Applicants PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL CANDIDATES Submit (in person) all the required documents in a large envelope directly to Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts. In a 1-inch binder, include a printed photo (minimum 8x10) of each portfolio item. Affix the printed photo onto the corresponding Portfolio Item pages and complete the information requested for that particular item. "Place all printed materials for Portfolio Item pages in a 1-inch binder and submit in large envelope (10x13). On the front of the envelope clearly print the candidate s name AND the grade to which he/she is applying. Place all required application documents inside this envelope as well. Complete and sign the Portfolio Submission form and place inside the binder. All candidates will be notified by letter in early November to whether he/she was successful in moving on to Round 2 (Audition day) Round 2 Audition Day By invitation only to successful candiates from Round 1 Candidates invited to Round 2 will bring in all of the original works of art submitted in the original portfolio. Candidates will bring in their sketchbook/ journal (any size or form), which reflects the student s ongoing dedication to drawing and the creative process. Candidates will be asked to complete drawing exercises which will be due on audition day. Successful candidates to Round 2 will receive more information about this requirement. Candidates will take part in a creative drawing workshop on-site on audition day. Candidates will be required to discuss their portfolio and provide critical interpretations of art. Candidates will be interviewed individually by an audition panel. All printed portfolios and drawings created on audition day will remain the property of CCAA.
PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL APPLICANTS TO Grades 10-12 1. Printed Portfolio Include a 4 x 6 photo print out of each art piece created along with the required details. The Visual Arts Portfolio is to include the following 7 pieces of work. Piece 1: Theme: Realistic SELFI Portrait Media: graphite pencil(s) on paper (NO COLOUR) Size: suggested 9 inches x 12 inches/ (23 cm x 30 cm) Challenge: Select an expression to be modeled on your face (ie. fear, sadness, excitement etc.) Take a photo of yourself expressing that emotion. Working from either the photo and /or using a mirror, draw your self-portrait. Try to achieve realistic likeness using a full range of tonal values and textures. Piece 2a. Theme: Inside Dwelling An inspired Painting Interpret the title Inside Dwelling (completely open to creative translation). Create a real or imagined composition based on your interpretation. Select one of the artistic styles from the list below to dictate the style of painting to be used in your composition. Media: Painting (acrylic or watercolour or digital*) Note*digital art must begin with a line drawing done by hand, then scanned and a minimum of 7 screen captured photos of the painting process. The original line drawing is to be submitted along with the completed work. Record how did you developed the theme. Then select one of the artistic styles of art and conduct some research. Find 2 key artists and samples of their work to inspire your painting. Also, look for additional resources to help you render the forms and content in your composition. Piece 2b. Common Questions about the Audition Although CCAA s primary intake years are for grades 7 and 9, we do audition all grade levels. Our wait list expires at the end of September in each school year. Q. What should I include in my portfolio? A. All candidates for grade 7 through grade 12, are asked to complete all of the art projects outlined in the portfolio requirements sheets available on line at http://cardinalcarteracademyforthearts.tcdsb.org There are specific pieces to be created. The submitted portfolio includes printed photos of each art piece collated in a1 inch binder. Please ensure the images are max 300 dpi(a high quality photo) and approximately 8x10 inches. Incomplete portfolios will not be considered. Please read through the details of each project carefully and what is required from each candidate. Q. What happens in round one? A. All of the applications and portfolios submitted will be reviewed and assessed by the adjudicating panel. Technical skill, conceptual and theoretical approaches, and individual responses to the creative challenges are considered. The strongest candidates will be invited to round 2 held on audition day. Q. What happens in round two (on audition day)? A. All successful candidates who are invited to Round 2 must bring in the original works of art created for the portfolio. Students will take part in a studio workshop that will require on-site drawing. This is followed by an interview and presentation of their actual portfolio pieces. All candidates will also take part in an art appreciation/critique activity. Applicants will be asked to bring in additional items to share on that day (details will be mailed out with the invitation). Candidates who do not bring in their original portfolio art works created for the audition will be disqualified. Q. Will I get my original art works back? A. Print portfolios for round 1 and some workshop activities in round 2 will remain CCAA property. Yes all belongings and art works will be returned to each applicant on the day of auditions. Round 2 original portfolio art will be returned to candidates after the interview. Q. Can I get help to create my portfolio? Do I need private lessons? A. We encourage you to seek opinions, however all work must be solely created by the candidate. A declaration form is to be signed when submitting the portfolio. Discrepancies in candidate s work during round 1 and round 2 will be noted. Understandably, there may be assistance in the documenting and printing of the art pieces for submission in round 1. Private lessons are not a requirement. Please note that we do not endorse any private studios nor their claim of ensuring the candidates success through our audition process.
