AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE 2015 The Tourism Accommodation Australia (NSW) Awards for Excellence are recognised as the most prestigious hospitality and tourism awards, honouring the achievement of excellence in a wide range of categories in the accommodation industry. These awards are open to all members of Tourism Accommodation Australia (NSW), who meet the nomination criteria as detailed here. Each year the competition gets tougher as the quality of the services and facilities continues to reach even higher standards throughout the accommodation sector. These awards increase public awareness of the hotel industry throughout the State with winners and finalists supported with an extensive media campaign. Many winners are also eligible to enter the high profile National Awards later in the year. The presentation of the Awards for Excellence would not be possible without the support of our major sponsors and we acknowledge their invaluable, ongoing contribution to the industry.

HOTEL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS HOTEL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS O1 Outstanding Achievement in Training This category will be judged on a written submission only of no more than 1500 words plus accompanying documents and pictures where relevant. The following should be addressed in your submission: Contribution to raising professionalism in the industry. Catering for industry needs. Innovation in educational training and support of established training outlets. Retention of staff as a result of the training initiatives. Records to be available to judge if required. Internal training, schedules, training manuals etc. Access to and support of external training. Training budget spent in relation to overall expenditure. Support documentation to be provided for all claims. O2 Outstanding Community Service and Achievement This category will be judged on a written submission only of no more than 1500 words plus accompanying documents and pictures where relevant. This should detail your contributions and support to the community throughout the nominated period. Criteria for entry must demonstrate that your hotel plays a strong role in your community. The following should be addressed in your submission: 3 Active participation and support of community groups and activities. Promotion of hotel industry to community groups. The extent to which the hotel environment reflects community support. The extent to which hotel employees embrace community involvement. Support of charitable institutions. Profile and public relations achieved through community work. How the hotel s community service activity fits with overall corporate objectives. O3 Best Environmental Practices This category will be judged on a written submission only of no more than 1500 words plus accompanying documents and pictures where relevant. Entrants must be able to demonstrate outstanding commitment to environmentally sustainable operations. The following should be addressed in your submission: Policies in place at your hotel/resort that support environmental best practice. The use of energy saving devices or practices with regard to water, energy and waste. The quality and quantity of your in-house recycling programmes. The existence of environment committees or working groups within the hotel/resort to address environmental issues. Employee understanding and education on the importance of environmental sustainability. Any other initiatives that demonstrate sustainable operations. Any accreditation and/or memberships of sustainability/ environmental organisations. All entrants to submit a synopsis of their organisational Sustainability Policy and Procedures as part of the appendix. O4 Workplace Health & Safety Hotel of the Year This category will be judged on a written submission only of no more than 1500 words plus accompanying documents and pictures where relevant. Entrants must be able to demonstrate achievement in occupational health and safety in the operations of your hotel and an innovative approach in the workplace. Safety initiatives should be outlined, and this must be in accordance with the WH&S legislation which involves all persons in the hospitality industry including staff, patrons, and suppliers. The following information should be included in your submission if applicable: Policies in place at your hotel that support workplace health & safety, environmental best practice and safe patron transportation. Explain how your hotel addresses safety issues (In particular your answers should focus on issues such as back of house safety, hazardous substances and manual handling). What innovative methods have been implemented to improve occupational health & safety in your workplace? Description of health & safety and patron safety training provided to staff both during induction and employment. Description of your policy for addressing the safe transport needs of your customers. All entrants to submit a synopsis of their WH+S Policy and Procedures as part of the appendix. 4 HOTEL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

HOTEL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS O5 Function Venue of the Year This category will be judged on a written submission only of no more than 1500 words plus accompanying documents and pictures where relevant. Entrants should clearly cover the following points in their written submission: 5 Why your hotel should win Function Venue of the Year. Describe specifically your function room facilities including storage and dressing rooms, staging, technical support, dance floor, proximity to restrooms, table settings, staffing etc Outline relevant training your staff are given appropriate to functions and events. Provide food and beverage menus. Example of a comprehensive function package. Photographs of the venue. Evidence of how your function facilities are successfully and professionally marketed. Provide evidence of successful functions held at your hotel. Provide testimonials and feedback. All entrants to advise how the organisational Sustainability Policy is integrated into their function business. O6 Conference Hotel of the Year This category will be judged on a written submission only of no more than 1500 words plus accompanying documents and pictures where relevant. Entrants should clearly cover the following points in their written submission: Conference room facilities, inclusive range of meeting rooms (capacity), number of breakout rooms and proximity to restrooms. Technical support and internet capability. Food and beverage facilities and menus available. Example of a comprehensive conference package. Relevant training provided for staff appropriate for conferencing. Evidence of how your conference facilities are successfully and professionally marketed. Provide evidence of successful conferences held at your hotel. Provide testimonials and feedback. All entrants to advise how the organisational Sustainability Policy is integrated into their conference business. PEOPLE AWARDS All written nominations for People Awards should include the following elements, failure to do so will mean that the submission will not be considered. CVs must be written to professional industry standards. Outstanding achievements, work or community related. How you demonstrated excellence in your role through personality and personal presentation. Photo of nominated employee in high resolution jpeg or eps. Evidence of the individual s commitment to corporate sustainability best practice within Each submission needs to be signed on the front page by the candidate and contain a letter of support from the nominator outlining the key strengths of the nominee which make them a worthy winner. Optional Elements: References/comments from guests and other relevant individuals. Media articles if relevant. Other (anything you feel will sell you over other submissions.) The candidate will be shortlisted based on the information and quality of written submission provided. The candidate must be available to appear for an interview either in person or via phone with one of the judges and the candidate will be advised in due course of the time and place of the interview. 6 PEOPLE AWARDS

PEOPLE AWARDS 15 Employee Excellence in Service 1,000 words, plus attachments where necessary, and an interview for finalists. Entries are limited to one per property. listed on page 6 plus an outline of: An event where an employee has exhibited service above and beyond all expectations in the hotel industry. 18 Chef of The Year finalists with a highly regarded industry chef. As part of the interview process for this category, candidates will be required to participate in a practical cooking element. An industry chef will come to the hotel and the candidate will then prepare 1 x dish of their choice and another dish selected by the judge on the current restaurant menu. The practical cooking assessment will be required to take place in the hotels own kitchen followed by a sit down interview with the judge. PROPERTY AWARDS PROPERTY AWARDS 20 Regional Restaurant of the Year To qualify for this category, the property must be located outside the Sydney Metropolitan area. This category will be judged by an anonymous onsite inspection by the judge(s). The judges will be assessing the following points: Food Relative price to dish. Presentation, quality and composition of dish. Originality, selection and variety, including daily specials. Accuracy and presentation of menu. Integration of local produce. Beverages Presentation and accuracy of beverage lists. Variety of wine, beers, spirits, cocktails, soft drinks and coffees. Integration of local wines. Variety of wines available by the glass. Served at the correct temperature. 21 Metropolitan Restaurant of the Year (Deluxe Hotels) To qualify for this category the restaurant must be located within the Sydney metropolitan area and be a 5 Star hotel. This category will be judged by an anonymous onsite inspection by the judge(s). The judges will be assessing the following points: Food Value relative to price and quality. Presentation, quality and composition of dish. Originality, selection and variety, including daily specials. Accuracy and presentation of menu. Integration of local produce. Beverages Presentation and accuracy of beverage lists. Variety of wine, beers, spirits, cocktails, soft drinks and coffees. Variety of wines available by the glass. Served at the correct temperature. Service 11 Presentation of staff and premises. Cleanliness of premises. Friendly and courteous staff. Appropriate and efficient service. Product knowledge (food and wine). General Measure of popularity. Overall cleanliness and hygiene. Characteristics theme, character, decor, design. Range of skills displayed by staff. Success in relative market positioning. Exterior of restaurant. Condition of furniture, fittings and electrical. Ambience, lighting, background music. Quality of table setting (glassware, crockery and cutlery, table linen). PROPERTY AWARDS 22 Metropolitan Restaurant of the Year (Mid-Range - Superior Hotels) To qualify for this category the restaurant must be located within the Sydney metropolitan area and be a 3.0 4.5 Star hotel. This category will be judged by an anonymous onsite inspection by the judge(s). The judges will be assessing the following points: Food Value relative to price and quality Presentation, quality and composition of dish. Originality, selection and variety, including daily specials. Accuracy and presentation of menu. Integration of local produce. Beverage Presentation and accuracy of beverage lists. Variety of wine, beers, spirits, cocktails, soft drinks and coffees. Variety of wines available by the glass. Served at the correct temperature. 23 Brasserie/Café of the Year This category is open for Hotels located both within and outside the Sydney metropolitan area. This category will be judged by an anonymous onsite inspection by the judge(s). The judges will be assessing the following points: Food Value relative to price and quality. Presentation and composition of dish. Originality, selection and variety, including daily specials. Accuracy and presentation of menu. Buffet presentation (if applicable). Presentation. General quality. Beverage Presentation, accuracy of beverage lists/ blackboards. Variety of beers, spirits, cocktails, soft drinks and coffees. Variety of wines available by the glass. Served at the correct temperatures. Presentation. Value for money. Service 13 Presentation of staff and premises. Cleanliness of premises. Friendly and courteous staff. Appropriate and efficient service. Product knowledge (food and wine). General Measure of popularity. Overall cleanliness and hygiene. Characteristics theme, unique, character, decor, design. Range of skills displayed by staff. Success in relative market positioning. Exterior of restaurant. Condition of furniture, fittings and electrical. Ambience, lighting, background music. PROPERTY AWARDS 24 Bar of the Year This category will be judged based on an anonymous onsite inspection by the judge(s). The following points provide a guideline to what the judges are assessing: Outstanding customer service. Bar presentation to be of the highest standard. Presentation of staff. Staff knowledge and efficiency. Bar décor and ambiance. Range of beverages available. 25 Health Club & Spa Facilities of the Year 27 Apartment/Suite Hotel of the Year This category will be judged by an anonymous on-site inspection. To qualify for this category, the property must offer fully self-contained accommodation. Judges will be assessing the following points: What is it about staying at your property that sets it apart from the rest? Apartment/Suite fit out quality. Apartment/Suite kitchen, quality of appliances, etc. This category will be judged based on an anonymous on-site inspection by the judge(s). The following points provide a guideline to what the judges are assessing: Arrival and departure experience. The level and quality of services provided/available to guests. Outstanding customer service. Array of services available. Quality of service and cleanliness. Quality of facilities. Décor and ambiance. Presentation of staff. Relative value for money. 26 Redeveloped Hotel of the Year This category will be judged 50% on your written submission (which should include no more than 1,500 words, website referral, photographs and backup documentation) and 50% on an anonymous site inspection. The following points provide a guideline to what the judges are assessing: 15 Redevelopment project is complete and has operated under refurbished conditions for a minimum of three months at time of nomination. Reason for refurbishment (documented by market research). Architectural innovation, décor and design features in refurbishment. Evidence of significant improvements in customer facilities. Staff efficiency improvements (documentation in submission). Financial gain due to refurbishment (documentation in submission). Total cost of investment and ROI (return on investment). Evidence of environmental sustainability best practice throughout Presentation of staff: courteous, professional and well groomed. The appearance and quality of hotel facilities in both individual accommodation rooms and the overall property. The programmes in place for your regular guests, e.g. rewards, corporate clubs. Friendliness and efficiency of staff, level of service and anticipation of guest needs. Apartment/suite décor and comfort, condition of fittings. Theme, character, atmosphere and activities. Apartment/Suite exterior. Apartment/ Suite kitchen, quality of appliances, etc. Professionalism and outstanding customer service. Security and safety. PROPERTY AWARDS 28 Economy Hotel of the Year This category applies to 2 to 3 star accommodation and will be judged by an anonymous on-site inspection. Judges will be assessing the following points: What is it about staying at your property that sets it apart from the rest? The level and quality of services provided/available to guests. The appearance, condition and quality of hotel facilities in both individual accommodation rooms and the overall property. Friendliness and efficiency of staff, level of service and anticipation of guest needs. Room décor and comfort, condition of fittings. Theme, character and atmosphere. 29 Mid-Range Hotel of the Year This category applies to 3 to 4 star accommodation and will be judged by an anonymous on-site inspection. Judges will be assessing the following points: What is it about staying at your property that sets it apart from the rest? The level and quality of services provided/available to guests. The appearance and quality of hotel facilities in both individual accommodation rooms and the overall property. How the food and beverage services complement the accommodation experience. The additional benefits you provide to your guests, e.g. turn-down service, robes, valet parking. Conference and function facilities. The programmes in place for your regular guests. For example: rewards, corporate clubs. Clean, tidy, well presented rooms with ensuite facilities. Friendliness and efficiency of staff, level of service and anticipation Fridge, minibar, coffee/ tea making facilities. of guest needs. Overall hygiene and cleanliness. Evidence of environmental sustainability best practice throughout Other non-essential criteria that may be assessed: Quality of food and beverage services ( if applicable) The programme in place for your regular guests. PROPERTY AWARDS 30 Sydney Superior Hotel of the Year To qualify for this category, the property must be within the Sydney metropolitan area and 4 to 4.5 star properties qualify. This category will be judged by an anonymous onsite inspection. Judges will be assessing the following points: What is it about staying at your property that sets it apart from the rest? Guidelines for Entry 1. Nomination and payment registration must be completed online at the TAA NSW website: http://nsw. tourismaccommodation.com.au/events/taa-nsw-awards-forexcellence/ 2. The nomination form with written submission, payment receipt and 2-3 high resolution jpeg or eps photos of the hotel and hotel logo where applicable, must be completed and forwarded to the TAA NSW offices by the deadline date Friday 24th April 2015. Entry fee is $160 (Inclusive GST) per category. 3. The criteria for each award is detailed in this booklet. Please ensure your entry meets the criteria, as entries will not be accepted if the criteria has not been met. 4. Depending on the category. Awards are judged by site inspection only, written submission only or both written submission and site inspection. In addition interviews will be conducted for the People Awards. 5. It is the entrants responsibility to ensure that correct material and information are supplied with each entry along with the correct photos. 6. Entrants who have won awards at the NSW level may then be eligible to nominate for entry into the National Awards. Please note that the categories that are applicable for the National Awards are marked within this booklet. 7. Where relevant, the hotel nominating will be required to provide gift/complimentary vouchers pertaining to the category entered and nominate the amount the hotel deems is standard for a meal, beverage or one night s accommodation.
