New Mexico Knights of Columbus United in Charity 2018 Annual Charity Raffle Council Presentation Worthy Grand Knight and My Brothers All, Since 1902, the Knights of NM have sought to Support our Church and assist those in need. Over the last five years thru the efforts of local councils like yours, we have donated time and treasure worth more than Fifty-Four Million Dollars to our Parishes and communities. To assist local councils in meeting their charitable goals, your State Council sponsors the Annual Charity Raffle. Providing 13,000 in prizes and incentives, including a 5,000 Grand Prize, five-1,000 prizes and 3,000 in council incentives. The council that sells the most tickets receives 1,000. The council that sells the most tickets per member receives 1,000. The council that sells the winning Grand Prize ticket receives 1,000. This continues to be a voluntary program, with last year s participating councils grossing almost 60,000 in sales. Tickets are reasonably priced at 5.00 each and sell effortlessly. Best of all there is no risk to your council s treasury, your only concern is where to place your donations. Last year, Hobbs Council 3225, raised 4,000, (GK Ruben Gonzales) Holy Child Council 12981 in Tijeras, raised 3,500, (GK Geoffrey Bacon) Las Vegas Council 804, raised 2,540, (GK Benjamin Maynes) San Juan Diego Council 15974 in Des Moines, raised 2,310, (GK Carlos Fernandez) o A council of 23 members located in a village of 150 people Just like your council they have that same small core group that makes it all happen. What is your council s goal? 2,500, 5,000, 10,000, more? Participating in the Annual Charity Raffle can make your target a reality! 1

The ticket split remains, at 50% for the council to donate to the local charities of their choice. The remaining 50% goes to your state organization to cover raffle administration costs, legal requirements, prizes and council incentives, with the remainder funding your state charity account. Last year your State Charity Account funded: Assistance to Religious Leaders KofC Christopher Fund, providing aid to our three Dioceses Seminaries. March for Life to the Santa Fe Capital Matching funds for Project Defending Life, fire relief fund raiser Catholic Boy and Girl of the year Scholarships And more! This year we have set a modest sales goal of 100,000. A goal which we Brothers can easily achieve in unity. However, to achieve this mark your council s participation is needed. In fact, if today, NM s 110 councils all had 12 core members sell two books each. We would raise 132,000 in one day. Enclosed in your council s Raffle Packet you will find; Tips to increase ticket sales Promotional Poster Ticket Roster to aid in the distribution of tickets Annual Charity Raffle Report Form (Please return at the State Convention) Raffle Tickets, Additional tickets are available upon request. Contact your DD first, if he no longer has any available please contact SFA Brother Terry Davenport tdavenport27@comcast.net or 505-470-1428 To start the ball rolling, your State Officers, District Deputies and State Program Directors, have made a commitment to lead by example and sell at least two books each. Together we can continue our great tradition as NM Knights of Columbus, United in Charity. Thank you in advance for your support and assistance in this endeavor. Please contact me with any questions. Vivat Jesu! Daniel Vigil NM State Treasurer 505-470-3525 or daniel.vigil.nmkofc@gmail.com Note: State Officers, (SD, SC, SS, ST, SA, SW & IPSD) State Executive Secretary, State Financial Assistant, District Deputies, Grand Knights and their immediate families are ineligible to win. 2

New Mexico Knights of Columbus United in Charity 2018 Annual Charity Raffle Techniques for Increasing Sales The power of unity: If today, New Mexico s 110 councils all had 12 core members sell two books each. Sales Team We would raise 132,000 in one day. Core Members o These are Council Officers and members who attend council meetings regularly. o Don t overwhelm them! Give them as many books as they can sell in a month. Two books minimum. o Encourage them to return sold books monthly and re-issue new books as needed. o Provide venues and opportunities, to aid your members in achieving their personal sales goal. o Create a member incentive; e.g. Member who sell the most books receives an award and bragging rights. Supporting Members o These are the members who pay their dues and occasionally show up to meetings and/or service projects. Receiving Organizations o These are the organizations your council will be donating to. o Ask them to help themselves by selling tickets to their supporters. Sales Opportunities Family and friends o Ask for their help and assume they will give it. Use an assumptive close: I need your help with our raffle fundraiser. How many tickets can I count you in for? Neighbors and co-workers o Same as above Home Parish o Obtain Pastor Permission first. o When practical, use sales tables for your customers. You stand in front promoting. o This sales technique is most effective when the proceeds will benefit our Church. Such as raising money to support Seminarians or to fund Parish improvements. o Make an announcement at end of Mass, benefit of the raffle (help Support our Parish Seminarian, or other), raffle prizes offered, (10,000 in prizes, 5,000 grand Prize).

Techniques for Increasing Sales, cont. General Public o This should represent most of your sales. Set up as many venues as your membership will support. o Look for high-traffic locations such as shopping centers, grocery stores, drug stores, home improvement stores, etc. Grocery stores tend to yield good results. o Obtain permission from store manager in advance. o Posted signs help to pre-sell customers. Use enclosed poster or similar. o Greet customers as they enter, make your sales as they exit. o A quick positive opener works best, Did you get your tickets? Techniques for Increased Sales If you don t ask you won t receive! o Talk to your prospective customers, don t assume they ll come to you. o Assume everyone is interested until they tell you otherwise. Change your opening line! o Instead of Would you like buy some tickets? use Did you get your tickets?. This positive change will make a huge difference. Short, two-line sales pitches work best! o Did you get your raffle tickets? 10,000 in prizes, proceeds benefit the needy. o Then wait for their response. Always be courteous! o They may be your best customer, tomorrow. Accept Credit and Debit Cards! o Which is easier? Sale one ticket to the person with 5 in their pocket or a book of tickets to the person with 50 in their account? There is no difference in your effort. o Accepting cards will greatly increase your sales number. (any processing fees are the council s reasonability) Please return the Charity Raffle Report form, with sold ticket stubs, unsold tickets and check(s) made payable to KofC, NMSC to SFA Terry Davenport prior to the NM Sate Convention. From the Office of the Supreme Advocate Guidelines for Raffles Federal law prohibits depositing, sending or delivering raffle tickets by United States mail. The law is designed to protect the integrity of raffles and other gambling activities, and to guard against illegal gambling schemes that may be carried out through the mail. Many states have similar laws. It is legally permissible to advertise raffles or send out promotional information by mail, but the raffle tickets should be delivered in person. Ideally, raffle tickets should be distributed to members during a council meeting or related council event.
