Students are provided an opportunity to utilize critical thinking, the nursing process, nursing skills, and theoretical knowledge in a variety of health care settings. ATTENANCE Students are to attend lecture, college lab, clinical lab, and/or alternative experiences promptly as scheduled. Absenteeism and tardiness will be dealt with according to the nursing handbook policies. If late for class the student will be marked absent unless the instructor is informed of the tardiness by the end of class time. Note: (from the Nursing Handbook) Student must inform the clinical instructor by phone (as specified by the clinical instructor) if a circumstance prevents attendance in the clinical experience. Attendance to the in-class lecture is expected and required. Students who are more than 15 minutes late for class will be counted as absent. Absenteeism will be addressed according to the Nursing Handbook (10% or more of lecture time missed will result in attendance probation). Each student should review the handbook and be aware of the absenteeism policy. If the student is not satisfactorily progressing in the course, the student will be required to meet with the instructor to discuss progress and develop a plan of action. PARTICIPATION Student expectations: Students are expected to attend class/lab/seminar prepared with reading assignments and/or written assignments. Active participation in class discussions, lab activities, and clinical experiences is expected. ue to the vast amount of information to be learned, not all unit objectives may be addressed in class and labs. However, since the content most likely will be tested, the student is responsible to complete those objectives. Students are responsible for all materials covered during their absence. Important: The lecture notes serve as an outline for the lecture material. Students are expected to bring the prepared lecture notes to class. The student must read and fill in the lecture notes prior to class. Students who present to class unprepared will jeopardize their success because they will find it very difficult to follow the lecture and class activities. ONLINE ACTIVITIES Students are expected to complete all Evolve computer assignments prior to each exam. Failure to complete these expectations and requirements will result in a Need for Professional evelopment. Please refer to the Nursing Handbook for further information about the need for professional development. GRAING POLICIES 80% of classroom theory is required to pass the course Test questions may be generated from any component of this course. There will be audio files on most tests. You will need to bring ear buds to each exam. Should a student close out of an online exam prematurely whether intentionally or by accident the student WILL NOT be allowed to re-access the exam and the final grade at that point will be recorded in the grade book. No exceptions will be made. ishonesty/cheating will not be tolerated. The college policy regarding academic dishonesty/cheating will be followed. Students are expected to take all tests on the designated days. When the need to miss a test arises the student must notify the lecture instructor within 24 hours about a make-up test and make an appointment with the Assessment Center to take the test. Failure to take the test on the designated day will result in a zero (0) for the test. If the appointment is changed the instructor must be notified. A missed test needs to be completed before the next scheduled test. According to the Nursing Handbook only one test can be missed per each 8-week period. Should a student have to miss a second test, that student will have to submit an appeal and if given permission to take the test, will receive the test in an alternate format. For this course, NUR 1211, only the six exam grades will be used to determine the final grade. Other assigned computer programs, quizzes, and portfolio assignments must be satisfactorily completed per specific guidelines for each, but students will not be awarded points for satisfactory completion. The student s grade is based on cumulative total points, which are then recorded as a percentage of the total points for the course: # of student test points = student percentage (course grade) # of total test points o not average the percentages of each test. The grading scale is in accordance with the Nursing Handbook. Grades will be posted ASAP in Blackboard. Grades will not be given out over the phone or via e-mail. Test review will be available after submitting the test and reviewing individual test results. Note taking or recording is NOT allowed during the test review. Students may make an appointment with the lecture instructor to individually review their test results. If challenging answers to test questions, the student must present written support from three professional sources. This must be given to the instructor for review within one week following the exam. Any student receiving less than 80% on an exam is required to complete a learning contract, remediation, meet with the instructor, and complete the remediation to the instructor within 3 school days of being assigned with 8 PM on the third day being the cutoff point. If the student fails to turn in their assignment within the three days that student will receive needs for professional development. Grading Scale 93-100% A 86-92% B 80-85% C 70-79% Below 70% F If the student is not satisfactorily progressing in the course, the student will be required to meet with the instructor to discuss progress and develop a plan of action. MATH QUIZ A passing grade of 90% is required on a Math Quiz. (See Nursing Handbook for requirements). The Math Quiz grade is not included in the overall class grade point calculation. WRITTEN PAPER All course papers must be completed in order to achieve a passing course grade. Papers designated for this course include: a. One Clinical Correlation Project and rubric: Each student must have the clinical instructor s approval prior to writing the assignment. Each paper is due at the beginning of the next clinical day after caring for the client. b. Weekly clinical Reflection Forms. c. uring the clinical day additional written work may be assigned. If each paper is not submitted on the designated day, it will NOT be accepted. The papers should be submitted, as the individual clinical instructor prefers. The student is ultimately responsible for papers that get lost or that pass the hands of people in between the student and instructor. CLINICAL PERFORMANCE The student nurse must meet the standards of this course in order to attain a passing grade. Therefore, when giving care in the acute care setting, the student will: a. emonstrate the nursing process in giving complete nursing care for one or more clients within the time frame allowed for clinical. b. Maintain legal requirements, ethical standards and institutional policies. c. Correctly demonstrate all nursing skills that have been presented previously. The student will be evaluated during clinical lab times for progress in application of course content and all nursing skills expected at this level. Feedback on clinical performance will be given to students by the clinical instructor in any or all of the following: verbally and mid-term evaluations. All students will have a face-toface final clinical evaluation to review the final written evaluation. PORTFOLIO A complete and up-to-date portfolio must be presented to the clinical instructor at the time of final evaluation. Failure to do so will result in an incomplete for the nursing course. PERFORMANCE POLICIES Students need to review and abide by policies in the IVCC Nursing Handbook including those regarding Critical Incidents, Need for Professional evelopment, Program of Improvement, and the Learning Contract. NOTE: Failure to attain any one of the above criteria will result in failure of the course. Evidence of unsafe, ineffective, or unreliable nursing care will result in failure of the course regardless of test scores or written assignments. ACAEMIC ISHONESTY Any academic dishonesty (ex.
