Welcome: President s Message DEAR FELLOW VIRGINIA LAWYERS: Cheers to 80 Years! I sincerely hope you are planning to attend the 80th Annual Meeting of the Virginia State Bar on June 14 17 in Virginia Beach. The planning committee has worked hard to create an innovative meeting. As always, the weekend offers an opportunity to stay abreast of current legal and professional issues, to spend leisure time with your family, and socialize with your colleagues, all in the relaxed and informal setting of Virginia Beach. As you will see from the attached schedule, we are planning a range of professional and leisure activities in addition to an exciting lineup of diverse CLE offerings. Along with 11 CLEs offered on Friday, section and conference members will gather for a joint Section & Conference Lunch. This will be a great opportunity to reconnect with your colleagues in a casual atmosphere and catch up on section and conference business related to your practice areas. The Annual Banquet on Friday evening remains a highlight of the meeting. Be sure to register for this event and join the celebration as Leonard C. Heath, Jr., of Newport News, is sworn in as the 80th President of the Virginia State Bar. Following the General Session on Saturday morning, the Young Lawyers Conference will sponsor a game show style CLE Family Feud featuring judges from across the Commonwealth. The Conference of Local and Specialty Bar Associations, the Diversity Conference, the Senior Lawyers Conference, and the Young Lawyers Conference will each sponsor special events and award presentations during the meeting. On Saturday morning, the Senior Lawyers Conference will host a brunch to honor this year s 50-Year Award recipients. As in the past several years, the meeting will be centered on the North End collection of boardwalk hotels. The Hilton Oceanfront (31st Street), the (36th Street) and the Holiday Inn North Beach (39th Street) will anchor our events, together with the Courtyard Marriott North (37th Street), the Hilton Garden Inn (33rd Street) and The Cavalier (42nd Street) as additional options for overnight accommodations. This range of options includes hotels geared especially to families, such as the Holiday Inn and the Courtyard Marriott, and others with a broader appeal such as the Hilton Oceanfront, the Hilton Garden Inn, The Cavalier, and the. The City of Virginia Beach will provide private, complimentary shuttle service between hotels during the weekend. You may also stroll along the boardwalk between hotels and enjoy the annual art show (one of the largest in the country) that will be right in front of some of our hotels this year. Be sure to download the Annual Meeting mobile app to keep you up-to-date on the schedule and location of all activities. The weekend will include the usual array of athletic activities, including golf, the 5k run, tennis, volleyball, and early morning yoga on the beach. Also, be sure to join in the fun of Family Bingo on Friday afternoon the caller is not to be missed! To round out the fun, there will be great raffle prizes and giveaways at the Saturday midday reception! As you can see, every effort is being made to ensure that the annual meeting will be fun, relaxing and professionally rewarding. Registration Advance registration is encouraged to efficiently manage the meeting and as a cost savings to registrants. Each lawyer and judge should register for the meeting with the appropriate registration/ticket fees. You may return the attached forms or you may register online at vsbevent.virginiainteractive.org. The registration fee for each lawyer includes admission to VSB CLE programs as well as complimentary admission to receptions and some special events. Meal tickets may be purchased at an additional charge, as indicated on the registration form. The registration fee does not include admission to the Recent Developments in the Law seminar sponsored by Virginia CLE on Thursday, June 14. REGISTRATION FEE SCHEDULE Preregistration (registration postmarked by May 11) $180 Late Registration (registration postmarked after May 11) $195 First Time Attendee (including first time legal aid attorneys & public defenders) $140 Registration fees are waived for full-time active judges and fully-retired judges; registration should be completed for badges and ticket purchases. Please retain a copy of your completed registration form for your records. An email confirmation will be sent if your email address is provided. The Virginia State Bar complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Each hotel has indicated that its facilities are accessible to people with disabilities. Please direct any special requests for accommodations due to a disability to the hotel of your choice when making your reservation. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS An administrative processing fee of $35 will be deducted from all registration fee refunds. Cancellation requests should be sent in writing to the Virginia State Bar: email annualmeeting@vsb.org. Cancellation deadline: 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. Refunds on meal tickets will be made on cancellations received up to 48 hours prior to function. The program will focus on the duties of such guardians and the roles they play in the affairs of their wards, the extent of and limitations on what they should do in those roles, the potentials for conflicts of interest and some of the other thorny situations which arise when serving as guardian ad litem. Bootcamp Basics: The Civilian Attorney Guide to Assisting Military Veterans and Their Families (1.5 Hours) Sponsors: Military Law Section In recognition of the toll on veterans that accompanies military service, the Veterans Treatment Docket (VTD) was designed to serve the community and increase public safety by creating a coordinated treatment response for justice-involved veterans.
