Gutsche, MD J. Eduardo Rame, MD Joyce W. Wald, DO, FACC
Program Overview & Target Audience This symposium is designed as a two-day educational program with a series of lectures on adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The symposium will also offer the opportunity for hands-on training on extracorporeal life support technique to support cardiac and respiratory patients whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange to sustain life. Subject experts will present insights into the technical aspects of the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation along with risks, benefits, and outcomes. Best practices in medical and nursing management of the ECMO patients along with how perfusion can empower nursing to manage ECMO patients in the critical care setting will be discussed. This activity has been designed for cardiovascular, pulmonary, critical care and anesthesia physicians, surgeons, perfusionists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, nurses, fellows, residents and other healthcare professionals who want to enhance their extracorporeal membrane oxygenation knowledge. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: Discuss the appropriate care of adult ECMO patients with respiratory and/or cardiac compromise Review the risk/benefit and outcomes of ECMO technology in different clinical scenarios Describe best practices regarding the medical and nursing management of the ECMO-supported patient Define center-based interaction between perfusionists and nurses to improve management in ECMO-supported patients in the critical care setting Accreditation Physicians: The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
