THE EUROPEAN CENTRE FOR DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL Call for application for Fellows in the European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET), EU-track (ECDC/cohort2013/2013-2015) Applicants are invited to apply for a fellow position in the European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET), EU-track, which is managed by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). ECDC plans to recruit twelve applicants for this cohort. The Centre is located in Stockholm, Sweden. The legal base for the Centre is Regulation (EC) 851/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 April 2004 establishing a European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control 1. See also the Centre home page at http://ecdc.europa.eu Description of the Training Programme The European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET) is a two-year fellowship programme, which provides training and practical experience in intervention epidemiology at the national and regional centres for surveillance and control of communicable diseases in the EU/EEA 2. The programme is aimed at EU/EEA 3 medical practitioners, public-health nurses, microbiologists, veterinarians and other health professionals with previous experience in public health and a keen interest in epidemiology. The programme trains EU fellows in the core skills required for the investigation and control of communicable disease threats in and beyond Europe. The programme consists of two tracks, the EU- and the MS-track (Member State-track). In the EU-track, EU nationals are trained in other Member State (MS) than their country/countries of origin. Under the professional supervision of the training supervisor in the hosting institute, the fellows will carry out activities related to the surveillance, investigation and control of communicable disease threats. During the two year training programme, the fellows will work to meet the following training objectives: Conduct outbreak investigations Analyse, design, or implement a surveillance system Plan, develop and/or conduct a research project on a relevant public health issue Gain acquaintance with laboratory techniques Support public health decision making Present and publish the results of their work to the scientific community Teach epidemiology or public health microbiology The fellows are placed in one of the acknowledged training sites participating in the EPIET programme outside of the country of their nationality/nationalities. An updated list of training sites available for 2013 will be provided online to the applicants before the selection interviews take place. The fellowship programme will start 16 September 2013. For further information on EPIET programme: www.epiet.org Qualifications and experience required Eligibility criteria In order to be an eligible candidate you need to have a set of formal requirements, as follows: A level of post-secondary education attested by a diploma in public health or a related subject, preferably at the level of a Master degree or equivalent At least one year practice in public health or epidemiology To have a thorough knowledge of at least two official languages of the EU/EEA4, one of which is English Be a national of a Member State of the EU/EEA 5 To be entitled to his or her full rights as citizen To meet the character requirements for the duties involved Selection criteria Professional skills and experiences 4 Same footnote as 2 5 Same footnote as 2 2

Proven experience in public health and/or epidemiology Good scientific skills and a basic knowledge of epidemiology Good computer skills Personal characteristics/interpersonal skills Strong commitment to continue field epidemiology in the EU after the two-year EPIET fellowship Good organisational skills Ability to work under pressure and manage responsibilities Good command of English; oral and written Advantageous criteria Sense of independence and inventiveness which would enable a personal input into the programme; Sufficient international exposure to interact cautiously with the different cultures, laws and requirements in the Member States Appointment of EPIET/EU-track fellows The EU-track fellows will be appointed by the Director of the Centre on the basis of a shortlist proposed by the EPIET selection committee. This call for application is the basis for the establishment of the selection committee s proposal. Applicants should note that the proposal may be made public and that inclusion in the shortlist does not guarantee appointment. The shortlist of applicants will be established following an open selection process. Further details will be sent to the applicants with the interview invitation. The fellow will be placed at one of the acknowledged training sites participating in the EPIET programme outside of the country of their nationality/nationalities. A list of available host sites will be available later this spring. The fellow will be employed by a training site. The fellow will be reimbursed for moving and removal, both for taking up post and at the termination of the fellowship. The successful applicants will be required to take up their post on 16 September 2013 when the programme starts. later starting date is foreseen.
