SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATING MINDS & NURTURING HEARTS SINCE 1923 EXCELLENCE IN CO-EDUCATION VIEWBOOK

TABLE OF CONTENTS About Sacred Heart...3 Academics...6 Student Activities...12 Athletics...16 Admission, Tuition & Scholarships...18 OUR MISSION Sacred Heart High School offers a secondary education beyond our walls, creating diverse opportunities for young men and women to realize their potential in a nurturing environment rooted in Catholic values. OUR VISION Sacred Heart High School seeks to provide a secondary education beyond our walls, allowing young men and women a diverse series of experiences by cultivating their love of learning, growth in character, and commitment to service. 2

HISTORY As the first Yonkers Catholic high school founded in 1923, Sacred Heart has remained dedicated to educating and enriching the lives of young men and women for nearly a century. Sacred Heart High School opened in 1923. In 1925, Rev. Cyprian Abler, O.F.M. Cap, completed the high school by adding four rooms to the building, which then served as a preparatory Capuchin Seminary. He and the Sisters of St. Agnes received full State accreditation in 1926. Affiliation with the University of New York and accreditation by the Board of Regents were achieved on April 30, 1930. ABOUT SACRED HEART Our school began to grow, and in the late 40 s and early 50 s we were able to accommodate more than 200 students. In 1954, the Archdiocese gave Father Finian Sullivan permission to expand the facilities. Through his efforts, two wings were added to the school. Upon completion, there were 16 additional classrooms, a cafeteria, and a library. The DeLaSalle Brothers of the Christian Schools came to Sacred Heart in September, 1965. Their arrival coincided with Sacred Heart changing from a co-institutional to a co-educational school. By 1967, the circular building was completed for occupancy, containing science laboratories with the latest in modern equipment, carpeted classrooms, and a 2,178 square foot gymnasium. Presently, Sacred Heart is staffed by dedicated lay teachers. We are committed to providing excellent and affordable Catholic education for the young men and women of Westchester, Bronx, Manhattan, and beyond. Our student body consists of students from a variety of different backgrounds, all of whom share the common goal of reaching their highest potential. Sacred Heart High School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. 3

Students having difficulty with a subject or a concept can come and get the extra help and support they need in order to improve their understanding of the subject area. 7

ACE PROGRAM Sacred Heart offers students the opportunity to participate in the Advanced College Experience Program (ACE Program). The ACE Program is an academic partnership between Westchester Community College and Sacred Heart High School, which enables our students to enroll in college level courses and earn college credit during their final year(s) of high school. Classes are taught by approved, college-qualified teachers. Students must meet all college pre-requisites and follow the Westchester Community College syllabuses. All classes take place in the high school during the regular school day. Students who complete all required coursework receive a grade, which is recorded on an official transcript. These grades can then be forwarded to the student s college of choice upon graduation, earning him or her a valuable step ahead upon entering college. 8

SACRED HEART PROVIDES STRONG COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS AND GUARDIANS Sacred Heart recognizes that parents and guardians are the primary educators of their children. CAMPUS MINISTRY Our Campus Ministry Office seeks to provide students with the best of what our Catholic faith has to offer. Our Campus Ministry Office seeks to provide students with the best of what our Catholic Faith has to offer, rooting its mission in love for Christ, faithfulness to the Church, and care for our neighbor. We pride ourselves on vibrant liturgies and prayer services, class retreats and trips to a local soup kitchen. Mass is celebrated each Thursday in the Chapel of Our Lady before school begins and the Chapel remains open throughout the day for personal prayer and meditation. Our Campus Ministry Office also offers RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) for students who wish to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Our community gathers regularly for school-wide liturgies and prayer services. Each grade level completes a retreat and a class pilgrimage each year. Sacred Heart also sponsors its own chapter of Students for Life as well as a youth group drawing upon the Franciscan roots of our school s founders. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL Ciao! Buon Giorno! Come and explore the wonders of Europe with fellow classmates and teachers here at Sacred Heart! High School is a time of expanding horizons. Each day the world becomes more connected through opportunities provided by social media: yet nothing can replace the actual experience of encountering new cultures. Each year, a group of Sacred Heart students explores the wonders and marvels of modern Europe. Our tours have ranged from Italy, Spain, France, Sweden, Ireland, and more! This program provides our students the opportunity to take their education beyond the walls of the school building. Grab a few Euros, passport, and plane ticket and meet us underneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris or in front of the Trevi Fountain in Rome! 13

Since September 99, the Sacred Heart Players Drama Club has been committed to bringing quality theater to the community by producing a fall play and spring musical annually. Led by a professional director/producer, choreographer and musical director, the shows are run by high school actors and crews from all grades. Students are involved in all aspects, including acting, singing, dancing, stage management, sound and lighting, sets and scenery, costumes and makeup, and more!
