MESSAGE FROM HEADQUARTERS A LETTER FROM THE CAPTAIN W e had a very nice showing at Hesston this past weekend. Always great to see the Curtis Crew and we were able to see Nathan Malone again. I d like thank especially Dennis, Anthony, Mark, Connor, Ian, Nathan, Bill (and if you stayed and I missed calling you out I apologize), for staying the full run of the event until basically 6 pm eastern. The weather was pretty comfortable Friday and Saturday, unfortunately we had to fight the Rebs and some rain on Sunday. As always, Ted and the good folks at Hesston put on a heck of a spread on Saturday for dinner, as well as some very tasty sandwiches on Sunday for lunch. Not very many hosts do that anymore, you can tell that group appreciates us. Hesston celebrated its 60 th anniversary and the brought out the big boy Shay #7 for the event. Combining that with NOT getting shot in the face made it a pretty enjoyable weekend. I also enjoyed some euchre with Rob, Riley and Ian on Saturday night. I mention this because Riley and I won. Many times. Ask Ian. reenact but their kids do. We LOVE having your son in the ranks. However, we have accumulated a significant following of modern dressed adults who stay in camp all day. Unfortunately this becomes a distraction for the public and sends the wrong message when they see modern dressed individuals in our camp, cooking, eating, sleeping in tents, and often (hey, I am sure it isn t YOU, it is probably the other guy) leaving modern trash (cups, soda bottles, food wrappers) in the camp, specifically under my fly. For me this hit a boiling point at Hartford City after cleaning up so many times I lost count. Having said that, going forward, if you are a parent and are going to spend any time in camp, we aren t going to force you to march, but you will need to acquire period dress. We would ask you respect the impression we are trying to create not only for us as re-enactors, but also for the public that comes as well. Having said that, we will see you at the CarmelFest 4 th of July Parade. Drive safe, Captain Van We ended up with a violation of a pretty basic safety issue that we will need to address at Carmel. No major injuries, but a good lesson learned. Last, I want to memorialize some dialogue the Officers and NCOs had at a meeting. This is primarily a conversation for parents who do not
