SCHOOL CLUB INNOVATION TOOLKIT 2013 activated in 100 schools Opening Ceremony officiated by YB Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation at Ranau, Sabah on 6th July 2013 School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 has been developed as part of the Malaysian Government initiative to drive and foster a culture of Creative and Innovative thinking methodology amongst students in Malaysia that will eventually grow to become future leaders. The module contains a set of activity guidelines and materials that can be used by existing school clubs to implement the program in an innovative, educational and fun way. () evolves with the knowledge and beliefs that children are naturally creative and inventive. These precious skill sets are embedded deep within a child s mind and through an effective training program can be induced, nurtured and harness towards greater heights. The introduction of s School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 and Kids Invent! serves as part of an innovative training program that aims to stimulate creative thinking methodology in children, enabling them to apply critical thinking and problem solving methodology into their daily lives. The development of the School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 and Kids Invent! marks yet another pioneering effort by as part of their integral role to support Malaysian government initiatives to drive and foster a culture of Creative and Innovative thinking methodology amongst students that will eventually grow to become future leaders. INNOVATIVE STUDENTS THE FUTURE WE DESIRE INNOVATING THE FUTURE THROUGH OUR CHILDREN S CREATIVE MINDS A child s nature is to explore, experiment and discover new things. Their surrounding environment provides them with an endless array of possibilities and through these explorations they gain valuable knowledge and most importantly infuse creative and innovative thinking capability as part of their culture. An ability that most often than not diminish as children grow. Not only will the activation of the School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 help children reactivate these hidden abilities but it also provides an opportunity for children to foster teamwork, bond and communicate effectively with their teachers and peers. The culture of innovation can be nurtured and the nurturing begins with the School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013.

Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) APPROVED! School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 & Kids Invent! were developed and conducted with endorsement and approval from the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE). Its activation in selected schools nationwide is fully supported by MOE and its initiation and approval process began with the presentation of a comprehensive program concept led by Madam Florence Ki from followed by successive meetings with representatives from MOE held in the offices of both Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia () and Ministry of Education (MOE) in which through meticulous study and creative fabrication gave birth to this innovative education toolkit. SUPPORTED by 14 State Education Departments (JPN) 14 JPN officers from various states nationwide were invited to participate in the school selection process and assist in the activation of the program in schools. Extensive meetings were conducted between and JPN officers in the month on April and May covering all 5 zones nationwide, namely: Zones States Involved Discussion Date Central & Southern Zone Pahang, Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan, 29th April 2013 Malacca, Negeri Sembilan & Johore East Coast Zone Terengganu & Kelantan 2nd May 2013 Northern Zone Perlis, Penang, Kedah & Perak 9th May 2013 Sarawak Zone Sarawak 17th May 2013 Sabah Zone Sabah 28th May 2013 These meetings provide a significant platform mainly in the identification and selection process of the schools involved, in which 100 schools have been carefully selected to kick start the School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 & Kids Invent! pilot program. DEVELOPING the Module A team of intellectuals comprising of professionals from various background ranging from the creative team, innovation consultants, academicians to experts from gathered and conducted several brainstorming sessions in order to develop the most educational, effective yet user-friendly Primary Toolkit Module that serves as a triggering key that opens up a student s mind to infinite creativity and inventiveness. Creative team & copywriter 1 2 The Toolkit is made up of two key components i.e. 1. The School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 Manual (as a Manual Book) 2. Safe Proof Materials (activation and activities) These key components combined together serves to stimulate specific key functions such as: 1. To induce learning, creativity and inventiveness 2. Encourage students to experiment 3. Provide hands-on experience 4. Enhance Problem Solving capabilities Prior to the activation of the program, a selected group of teachers undergo intensive training conducted by professionals that will enable them to experience the program, understand its purpose and cascade down the program to students in the most effective manner to obtain the best results possible. Majority of the teachers activated the program during their co-curriculum session and the program is duly monitored via online through a reporting system that is done on a scheduled basis. The School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 Module was successfully produced on 5 June 2013.

Teacher Empowerment Program (TEP) Covering 5 Zones The Teacher Empowerment Program (TEP) was duly conducted covering all 5 Zones nationwide in the month of June and July 2013. The TEP key objectives are to train, provide hands-on experience and equipped teachers with critical knowledge and skills that they would require to conduct the School Club Innovation 2013 and Kids Invent! program in their respective schools. A total of 225 teachers from 100 schools successfully completed the Teacher Empowerment Program (TEP) through several intensive training sessions conducted according to their respective zones. The teachers received their personal Program Manual and materials by the end of the training program. presented a Certificate of Participation to all participants. The program must be continued in the future as it gives a huge impact on both the teachers and students inventive minds and serves as a platform that allows for the creation of creative ideas

Delivering the Program Toolkit to 100 schools The School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 and Kids Invent! program manual and activity materials were delivered to the 100 selected schools enabling them to kick-start the pilot program. The materials provided are sufficient for 20,000 students nationwide to conduct the program activities in a fun yet educational manner and instil a culture of creative thinking and inventiveness in their daily lives. 1 - Activities materials (3 different activities for Primary, Secondary & Tech/Vocational Schools) 2 - Standee for Innovation Corner 3 - Feedback Form for Students 4 - Ideation Form 5 - School Club Innovation Toolkit Manual Book 2013 All items were successfully delivered by 21st July 2013. School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 INVENTING INNOVATORS! The schools are allocated a period of 3 months to activate and complete the entire program commencing from July till September 2013. A total of 19,261 students from 100 selected schools participated in the program and took the first step to activate their creative minds and problem solving capabilities. That is proven true by the 3,842 submission of ideas received via the program online portal.

Program Monitoring and Evaluation methodology of continuous innovation and enhancement has been duly applied during the activation of the School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 and Kids Invent! program. Constant monitoring and evaluation is conducted on a scheduled basis to ensure that the program maintain a high standard of efficiency and achieve the desired result. The monitoring and evaluation activity also serves as a learning platform that will enable to further innovate and explore areas for future enhancement. The evaluation was conducted with the presence of all the participating teachers and students in their respective schools. A total of five (5) monitoring and evaluation sessions were conducted in selected schools during the Schools Program Activation process covering six (6) states as listed below: Sarawak 29-30 July 2013 Mr. Mooi Wah Kian, Head of Evaluation Unit, Planning Division, MOSTI and Project Executive Nursyahirah/Wan Sheau Mun attended the program activation camp at SMK Green Road to conduct the evaluation process. Kelantan 21-22 August 2013 CEO of Kids Invent Malaysia, Madam Rachel Tan and Trainer, Dr. Janice Nga attended the SMK Beris Panchor program activation camp to monitor and evaluate the program. Penang 24 August 2013 CEO of Kids Invent Malaysia, Madam Rachel Tan and Trainer, Dr. Janice Nga and Mr. Suhail did the evaluation for SK Convent Green Lane. Negeri Sembilan 24 August 2013 CEO of Kids Invent Malaysia, Madam Rachel Tan and Facilitator, Ms. Shirley from Kids Invent! conduct the evaluation for SMK Seri Pagi. Melaka 24 September 2013 Mr. Paul Devaraj Micheal from MOSTI and Project Executive, Nursyahirah/Wan Sheau Mun attended and evaluated the activation camp in SK Jalan Datuk Palembang. Selangor 24 October 2013 CEO of Kids Invent Malaysia, Madam Rachel Tan and Facilitator, Ms. Shirley evaluated the program activation camp in KV, Kajang. The assessment result shows that the Teacher Empowerment Program proves to be effective as both teachers and students are able to conduct the program effectively and in a timely manner.

DEVELOPMENTof Ideation Module The 3rd phase and one of the most essential part of the Toolkit Module is the development of the Ideation Module that gave focus on the methodology of idea generation. This includes an outline of step by step processes and guidelines that user can use to explore possibilities and things to look for in idea generation. Ideation is a program that has been designed as a guide book for students to understand the entire process required in idea generation including fact finding, brainstorming, problem finding, solutions and many other key processes that would induce the creation of innovative ideas and enhances students problem solving capabilities. The brilliant band of parties that plays a vital role in the development of the Ideation Module are Encik Muhammad Aziph Dato Mustapha (Acting Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia), Madam Florence Ki (General Manager of Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia), Dr Ed. Sobey ( Founder of National Toy Hall of Fame) and consultant from American Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship. A four day brainstorming session held on 8-11 September 2013 at IOI Marriot, Putrajaya marks the first step towards the creation of the Ideation Module. Dr. Ed Sobey, the prime mover of Kids Invent! shared his thoughts and contribute critical inputs in the development of the Ideation Module via video conference.

Online Preliminary Judging Technology and the internet form an integral role in our daily lives transcending across borders and boundaries. The implementation of ideas and reports submission via online for the School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 program opens up boundless opportunity for both and the program participants. Leveraging on this opportunity conducted the Ideation Online competition. The competition aims to induce participation from schools via the conferment of the School of the Month winner (Highest number of ideas submitted in a month) in which the winning school receives a Samsung Galaxy Tab and Idea of the Month winner (Best idea of the month) in which the winning student(s) receives a G Shock watch. The competitions were conducted simultaneously during the month of July till September with the aim to induce greater awareness and participation from both teachers and students. School of the Month Winners Winners for the School of the Month competition were selected via the most number of ideas submission received from the respective schools during the said month. Online Semi-final Judging The Ideation semi-final judging session was conducted via online whereby 14 teams were short-listed to enter the Grand Final Competition held from 10th till 13th of November 2013 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in conjunction with the World Innovation Forum Kuala Lumpur (WIF-KL) 2013. Toolkit Online Portal: Becoming Tech Savvy Realising the significant of technology in our daily lives and how it would change the way we work, communicate and exchange information, led by its General Manager, Madam Florence Ki took the initiative to develop an online portal to facilitate and help conclude the activation of the School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 program. The online portal bearing the address serves as a communication, idea and report submission platform for both teachers and students. It enables both parties to perform online feedback submissions including program reports and Ideation (submission of innovative ideas from schools). then moved on to the 2nd phase of the online portal functionality through the Development of the Online Competition Judging and Report Generation Platform that perform data extraction for the following purpose: Automated online judging system Generating of reports The system is able to generate results immediately and effectively thus providing significant input for judges to make informed and accurate decisions online and the report can be generated in any format desired. Teachers and students need only to log on to and submit their respective reports and ideas in the most user-friendly, fast and effective method. The type of reports required to be submitted online includes; Student s feedback form, Teacher s feedback form, Idea submission report and Activity report. Although the program has been duly concluded, still encourages schools to submit any ideas that they might have. Overall, a total of 19,261 students from 100 schools took part in the program with a total submission of 3,842 ideas. The result was truly overwhelming and proves the effectiveness of the School Club Innovation Toolkit 2013 and Kids Invent! program.

Day 1 : 10 November 2013 WORLD INNOVATION FORUM KUALA LUMPUR 2013 Ideation Grand Final Competition In preparation for the Ideation Grand Final Competition, a total 70 students from 14 schools accompanied by their teachers and 14 JPN officers were invited to a program briefing cum welcome dinner held at the Impiana KLCC Hotel on 10th of November 2013. The simple get-together and briefing session was conducted to familiarise the finalists with the grand final competition format and presentation method. It also provides a final opportunity for the finalists to acquire input from professionals and improve their idea before the actual Ideation Grand Final Competition took place. Day 2 : 11 November 2013 IDEA ENHANCEMENT WORKSHOP The idea enhancement workshop conducted at Conference Hall 1, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on 11th November 2013 serves as the final training platform prior to the Ideation Grand Final Competition. 2 weeks beforehand, has already implemented an online mentoring sessions via Skype, where innovation consultants were appointed and tasked with the duty to train, counsel and guide the 14 finalists on achieving idea enhancement capability and effective presentation skills. After the mentoring sessions were concluded notable improvements in the projection of ideas can be seen compared to the 1st sketch. The appointed Innovation consultants were Mr. Lee Yee Dian from Global Innovation & Entrepreneurship Foundation, Mr. Robest Yong, a Malaysia Innovator, and 4 professional artists who sketches the ideas for the finalists.

3 1 2 Day 3 : 12 November 2013 GRAND FINAL JUDGING SESSION The Ideation Grand Final Competition, final judging session took place on-site at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 12th November 2013 in conjunction with the World Innovation Forum Kuala Lumpur 2013 (WIFKL 2013). All 14 finalists presented their idea with an allocation of only 10 minutes for each team. The judging method uses a real time high tech online input and tabulation system aided by Dr. Yee Mong Suan, whilst the Grand Final judges consist of professionals and credible figures from various background; namely: 1.
