JOURNALISM 2011 HIGH SCHOOL PRESS CONVENTION South Dakota State University, Brookings September 26, 2011 The 2011 High School Press Convention was held on the SDSU campus in Brookings on September 26 th. Over 180 high school journalists and advisors from 17 schools attended the convention. The keynote speaker for the convention was Dr. Matthew Cecil who is a professor with the SDSU Journalism Department. Students also attended breakout sessions with SDSU graduates, Kyle Beck and Andrea Leesch to discuss working in the field of journalism after graduating. Separate breakout session were available for advisors. The Convention concluded with the awards presentation in the afternoon. The awards are listed below. 2011 ALL-STATE ANNUAL PUBLICATIONS CONTEST AWARDS Awards for high school publications published during the 2010-11 school year. Submitted publications are judged and given All-State, First Class, Second Class or Third Class ratings. Each school receiving All-State honors received a plaque. TOP OF CLASS The top of Class Award for newspaper and yearbook is presented to the school whose newspaper accumulated the highest All-State rating score and to the school whose yearbook accumulated the highest All-State rating score. FOUNDER'S AWARD Each year, during the Annual High School Press Convention, the Founders award is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding service to high school journalism education through the teaching of the principles of good journalism in South Dakota.
