Université Laval Activities Report 2007-2008 2007-2008 Chapter officers, in a Heroes setting
About Us Our chapter is composed of 22 graduate students at Université Laval, Québec, Canada. Combined with Université Laval s OSA and CIPI-S student chapters we form what is called REPOL (Regroupement des Étudiants en Optique et Photonique à Laval) and represent over 150 graduate students in optics and photonics. Our laboratories and offices are located in a newly-built pavilion for the COPL (Centre d Optique, Photonique et Laser) at Université Laval. Our website is relatively new and it is constantly growing : www.repol.copl.ulaval.ca. We also have a Facebook group, but it is not very active at the moment. Activities in 2007-2008 Outreach Activities We participated in "Les filles et les sciences", an annual day of scientific activities to promote science for high school girls. In February 2008, we had a kiosk with optics-photonics demonstrations and did a one-hour workshop on optics with 12 girls. Industrial Visits In 2007-2008, we visited 3 companies in the optics-photonics field: Telops, Olympus and ABB Bomem. We usually do around 4 industrial visits every year. Social Activities To encourage networking amongst students, professors and staff, we offer approximately one social activity per month. This year, we had a Beach Party in the middle of the winter, we organized the COPL Christmas Party and a lunch at the Sugar Shack (Cabane à sucre), as well as a few barbecues during the summer and 5à7 cocktails. Scholarship : REPOL Grant Last year, we organized a student paper contest, judged by a jury of three professors. The prize was a 500$ scholarship, shared between the two winners (there was a tie!). The winners were Martin Bernier and Alexandre April and the COPL contributed to half the scholarship. Planned activities for 2008-2009 Collaborative Conference "Photonics ToolkiT" consists in 3 days of conferences and workshops for graduate students in optics-photonics. Over 100 studentsinvestigators in optics-photonics from North America will meet and talk about their research, assist to conferences and participate in various workshops, notably about communication tips and data processing tools. They will also get to meet optics-photonics industry representatives for an evening. We are organizing this event with the help of the Montreal SPIE and OSA Chapters, as well as the CIPI-S network. More details can be found here : www.repol.copl.ulaval.ca/toolkit
Outreach activities "Les Jeux photoniques" is a scientific competition during which teams of high school students will oppose each other in an optics-photonics challenge. Before this competition, one hour workshops about optical components will be given to these students in their school. As for "Photonics ToolkiT", we are organizing this event with the Montreal SPIE and OSA Chapters. More details can be found here : www.repol.copl.ulaval.ca/jeux We also plan on participating in "Les filles et les sciences" next February. Visiting Lecturer In October 2008, Melissa Marshall will lead a 4h workshop on how to make a good scientific presentation. We will also use the OSA visiting lecturer program to invite Philippe Lalanne, research director at the Laboratoire Charles Fabry de l'institut d'optique, France. Industrial Visits If our budget allows it, we will also do industrial visits in 2008-2009. Quebec City is an optics-photonics hub, so we have many companies to visit! Social Activities Ideas for upcoming social activities include a Karaoke night, a Khet tournament and a multicultural potluck dinner (everyone will bring food from their native country). We are also thinking about preparing a game of "The Price Is Right Optics/Photonics Edition" for the next Christmas Party, but don t spread the word, it s a surprise! Scholarship : REPOL Grant, 2 nd Edition We will also organize the student paper contest, but this year the applicants will also have to present a 20-minute talk about their research. The COPL has agreed to help us out and give 250$ like last year.
