Sunflower Label Design RFP Seeking artists and graphic designers to submit creative and artistic label designs for new sunflower oil grown and pressed in Platteville, WI by UW Platteville students. Date of announcement: September 30 th, 2013 Submission deadline: Midnight Friday October 25 th, 2013 Eligibility: Any artist living within 100 miles of Platteville, WI Award: Cash reward of $150 upon successful completion of the project, name recognition on label. Overview: UW Platteville Office of Sustainability and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Program have partnered to produce sunflower oil for human consumption. Over 6 acres of sunflower seeds are growing/drying down right now just west of Menards in Platteville. In late October these seeds will be harvested and cold pressed on campus, by students into high quality and healthy cooking oil for sale at local retail locations throughout the tristate area. Sunflower oil is an excellent alternative to olive oil and canola oil and easily produced in southern Wisconsin. Our sunflower oil is a high value product and profits from sales will fund future sustainability initiatives in the region. In 2014, we hope to expand sunflower oil production and experiment with the production of other locally grown oils for both food and biofuel use. We would like the label on our bottle to reflect the creativity, excitement, sustainability, and local spirit of our product. As the project expands we hope to do an annual call for artists and select a new design for our oil products each year. In effect we are curating an annual art gallery on our oil bottles. We are not limiting our submissions to any particular medium, as long as the art can translate into a 2 dimensional label. An example of this can be seen in the seed labels of the Hudson Valley Seed Library: www.seedlibrary.org/art packs.html Above: Exampled of Hudson Valley Seed Library artistic seed packets. We would also like our label to differentiate our product from other sunflower oil s on the market. Some of the other products include: http://www.centurysunoil.com, http://cookingwithsunfloweroil.com, http://www.cherokeebisonfarms.com/page.sunfloweroil.html, http://www.spectrumorganics.com Design Template We will bottle the oil in 8 oz and 17 oz tall, square bottles made of clear class with a corked lid (see image at right). The label will be a sticker that wraps around three sides of the bottle. We will design the label for a 17 oz bottle and then will work with the selected artist to make a slightly smaller (5.5 x 3.5 ) version for the 8 oz bottle. Page 1 of 5
