Each student will be held responsible for all materials covered in weekly modules (and/or via weekly ANGEL course e-mails). Each student will be held responsible for all materials covered during the semester and for any changes in the course syllabus. Each student will be responsible for obtaining the scheduled periods of each course exam and the scheduled due dates for all assignments.
Your composite grade for this course will be calculated from the following points that will be accrued during the following NUR 416 course activities: a. Three (3) Examinations worth a total of 30% of your composite course grade (10% for each of the first two exams and (non-cumulative) final exam). b. Your Course Portfolio grade, which will include all written work assignments including: a) SIX Related Topic Summaries, and b) TWO Critical Incident Analyses worth a total of 30% of your composite course grade. (NOTE: Refer to Evaluation Rubric for Written Work Rubric on Page 20 and Page 22 of your NUR416 Course Pack), and c. Your Clinical Course Performance will be worth 40% of your composite course grade using the College of Nursing Clinical Evaluation System. (NOTE: refer to the: a) Clinical Faculty (Preceptor) and Student Evaluation of NUR416 Student Performance on Pages 10-13 of Course Pack, and b) the Clinical Journal Guidelines, on Page 14 of course pack. Exams 30% Exam One 10% Exam Two 10% Final Exam (non-cumulative) 10% In-Class Course Portfolio 30% Related Topic Summaries X 6 25% Critical Incident Analyses X 2 5% Cover Letter and Resume Pass/No Pass Clinical Course Performance 40% Clinical Performance Evaluation 10% Clinical Journal Entries (at least EIGHT) 20% Clinical Site Project 10% Supervised Clinical Setting Activities: You will need to develop 6 to 10 of your own personal clinical objectives for clinical. Course faculty will provide information about how to write measurable learning objectives. Your preceptor will assist you in tailoring your objectives for your clinical site experiences. See Page 21 of the Course Pack for examples of types of possible clinical activities. NOTE: The student will need to record their completed clinical hours on a calendar that will be routed to campus faculty at the end of the course. See your ANGEL course folder for: a) examples of some pretty nice personal clinical objectives, and b) an Excel software calendar template software macro for you to use..
A campus faculty member, your preceptor, and you will comprise a 3-person team to: a) facilitate your clinical learning based upon your personal learning objectives b) evaluate your course performance during the semester. See Roles and Responsibilities lists for Campus Faculty, Preceptor, and Student (pp. 7-9, NUR 416 Course Pack). Student Faculty Relationships Pursuant to the faculty and student expectations elaborated in The Spartan Life, each of us will be held jointly responsible for the educational atmosphere of this course. If one or more student(s), or we, ever conduct themselves/ourselves in a manner that is disruptive to the course activities, it is everyone s responsibility to resolve the problem. The appropriate manner in which to resolve issues should begin with the involved parties. The Clinical Preceptor should be notified of all agency-related issues. To summarize: First, talk with your assigned Clinical Preceptor who is. Second, (if necessary) speak with your Campus Faculty who is. Third, (if necessary) speak with your Course Faculty of Record Dr. Bill Corser Fourth, (if necessary) speak with the Director of Undergraduate Programs; Dr. MaryJo Arndt It is expected that each student will act in a professionally courteous and professional manner with peers, faculty, clinical partners and College of Nursing associates during each course-related encounter. It is expected that each student will arrive on time to each scheduled class, clinical shift, and clinical seminar. Clinical Site Dress Code: Make sure to dress in accordance with agency policy and your prospective role of a professional Registered Nurse. Ask your preceptor about the appropriate dress for the site that is also in accordance with the College of Nursing professional dress policies. Safety: In order to successfully complete the clinical requirements, you must demonstrate nursing competencies at the same level of safety as appropriate to the role of a senior BSN student. Inappropriate or poorly performed psychomotor skills; inappropriate, inaccurate, or inadequate theoretical base for care; or inaccurate or misrepresented documentation is cause for dismissal from the course and a course grade of 0.0.
Situations Requiring Immediate Contact by Preceptor to Campus Faculty: 1. Accident/injury involving client or student. 2. Back-up plan for preceptor replacement if necessary. 3. Unsuccessful resolution of conflict between preceptor and student. Course Evaluation Methods: Specific clinical evaluation criteria are included on the appropriate evaluation forms. Your composite NUR416 grade will be comprised of all clinical-related and course written work and your overall clinical grade. Please refer to the formal self and preceptor faculty evaluation forms that will be completed at both midterm and final (see pp. 10-13 of Course Pack). Quality of written work, exam, and Discussion Forum Performance: Your course work for NUR416 will be comprised of: 1. Clinical journal entries: Throughout the semester, your written work is expected to reflect thoughtful analysis and synthesis of ideas and insights. A MINIMUM of EIGHT clinical journal entries will be required to pass this course, FOUR of which will need to be completed before the Midterm Evaluation. Each journal entry must be at least TWO complete double-spaced, 1-inch margin pages, but not more than FIVE complete double-spaced, 1-inch margin pages. A mere listing or description of your clinical activities is not acceptable. The Written Work Evaluation Rubric (p. 20, NUR 416 Course Pack) specifies the overall quality indicators for each grade level. If your written work is judged by your campus faculty to be at an unacceptable level or quantity, the faculty will document this on a Student Progress Record form (pp. 15-17, NUR 416 Course Pack), which is kept by your campus faculty in your student folder. 2. Related Topic Summaries (RTS): Points will be earned for adequate and timely completion of SIX written work assignments referred to as Related Topic Summaries. (see Course Objectives section in Course Pack for specific RTS specifications). Related Topic Summary assignments are each listed in the Course Pack, and should relate to weekly lecture slides, and each student s previous/current clinical experiences. Each RTS will be assigned up to ten points. Assignments that are handed in late will have one point deducted for each day late up to 3 days. Assignments turned in four or more days late will be assigned zero points. Submit your RTS and all other written work assignments in your clinical section ANGEL drop box. If you are late with your RTS assignment, you must follow-up with an ANGEL email message to your campus faculty advising them of this. 3. Critical Incidents Two Critical Incidents, in which the student analyses ONE positive and ONE negative incident that was significant for them during their clinical experiences, will be worth a total of 5% of your Clinical Course Work; each Critical Incident worth 2.5 %. (Page 19 of Course Pack).
All NUR416 written work assignments must be typed and double-spaced with 1-inch margins. Points will be deducted for any written work assignments that are not typed. NOTE: All of your clinical journal entries, Related Topic Summary, and Critical Incident written work must be electronically submitted or mailed in hard copy form at least THREE complete working days before evaluation meetings for it to be considered during either Midterm or Final Clinical Evaluations. Handing in your journal entries two days, one day, etc. will NOT result in your work being considered or factored into your midterm or final clinical performance grades. NOTE: Since this is a Tier II writing course, the quality of your written work is expected to be that of the quality becoming a later undergraduate student (i.e. more scholarly and rigorous than a freshman or sophomore would be realistically capable of producing). If you d like to review what this means go to the College of Nursing Specific Tier II Writing Criteria at: http://www.reg.msu.edu/read/ucc/nur.pdf to examine what Tier II writing should be looking like for BSN upperclassman. Please refer any questions to either the Faculty of Record or your Campus Faculty as they may arise. 4. Discussion Forum Participation is required by each student for all weekly discussion forums. Active participation in each posted discussion forum topic by each student is expected. Each student is expected to reads all postings placed by faculty and other students, and respond to at least ONE others student s initial posting comments. Active participation is comprised of more than simple I agree type-postings to earlier student posting comments. Each student is expected to contribute some new idea, perspective, or insight, possibly related to assigned text or article readings, web sites, etc. Once a student s clinical experiences begin, they are expected to relate their course clinical experiences to Discussion Forum discussions WITHOUT divulging any protected health information. General Discussion Forum Deadline Expectations Before Monday morning: Corser opens week s topic/scenario. By Thursday at Midnight: first personal posting due form each student. By Saturday at Midnight: Response to at least one other student s posting due. By the next Monday morning: Corser summarizes and wraps up the prior week s Discussion Forum, opens up the Discussion Forum for next week.
5. Course Exams: Each of the course exams will each be comprised of 50 multiplechoice items on ANGEL. All make up exams (only Exams I, II, and Final Exam can be made up in the event of an excused absence) will be given the week of final exams at a time that is convenient for the course instructor. Questions on make up exams will be different from those questions given on scheduled exam dates and may also use a different testing format (e.g., multiple choice, essay, etc). All students are expected to take the Final Exam as scheduled. 6. Course Attendance/Behavior: 6a. Attendance: Academic Dishonesty: Article 2.3.3 of the Academic Freedom Report states that the student shares with the faculty the responsibility for maintaining the integrity of scholarship, grades, and professional standards. In addition, the College of Nursing adheres to the policies on academic honesty as specified in General Student Regulations 1.0, Protection of Scholarship and Grades, and in the all-university Policy on Integrity of Scholarship and Grades, which are included in Spartan Life Student Handbook and Resource Guide. Students who plagiarize, fabricate, or falsify data (written documentation in journal entries, critical incidents, number of clinical hours, for example) will receive a 0.0 for their NUR 416 course. 6b. Overall Course Performance: In compliance with the Professional Development Guidelines as noted in the progression the major policies in the College of Nursing Undergraduate Student Handbook, students must demonstrate: 1. Appropriate interpersonal relations and communication with clients, peers, faculty, and other health care personnel. 2. Responsible fulfillment of class and practicum obligations, including provision of safe nursing care in the practicum setting; and 3. Honesty and integrity in all academic and professional matters. 6c. Professional Behavior in Course Correspondences and Discussion Forum Activities: Students and faculty are expected to adhere to standards of professional behavior [see Spartan Life 2005-06]. In addition to the Professional Development Guidelines, each student in Nursing 416 is expected to observe appropriate business and class etiquette. 6d. Organizational Confidentiality: Protection of the privacy of the organization by confidential reporting is an expected ethical responsibility of the BSN nursing student in this course. Like patient confidentiality, we do not disclose information about employees or the name of the organization except on a need-to-know basis. In oral or written discussions of the clinical experience it is expected that employees initials will be used and that the name or organizations will be disguised so that others are not aware of the actual name. In sensitive situations in the clinical setting, students should excuse themselves or expect to be excluded and comply graciously. These situations may include: disciplinary action, collective bargaining, marketing or other competitive strategies, etc.
7. Possible Extra Credit Points: Extra Credit Point(s) may be added to students composite course points for going to the MSU S.I.R.S. Evaluation website and completing course and instructor evaluations by the end of the specified S.I.R.S. period. Although the Course Faculty of Record will be able to discern whether or not a student has done so on the website, neither the Course Faculty of Record nor the Campus Faculty Instructor will ever be capable of seeing how an individual student responded regarding the NUR 416 course or instructor. Students must earn a passing score in their: a) group of course exams, b) all clinical written work, AND c) clinical performance grades in order to pass the course. Composite course points will not be rounded up. For NUR 416, the standard undergraduate College of Nursing Grading Scale will be used. 94 100% = 4.0 89 93% = 3.5 84-88% = 3.0 79 83 % = 2.5 75 78% = 2.0 70 74% = 1.5 65-69% = 1.0 < 65 = 0.0 Accommodations for Disabilities: Students with disabilities should contact the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities to develop and document reasonable accommodations. To enable the Course Faculty of Record to provide special testing accommodations, students who know they need special accommodations must inform the Course Faculty of Record during the first two weeks of the course with documentation concerning the type of accommodation needed. The Course Faculty of Record may contact the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities for clarification, if needed. Taping Policy: Students may not audio- or videotape class presentations by faculty, invited guest speakers, or other students.
