University of Northern Colorado Bears vs. Eastern New Mexico Zias (1-2) Sept. 14, 2003-3:00 p.m. UNM Soccer Complex (5,000) - Albuquerque, N.M. About UNC: After starting the season with a 0-2 record following matches with Division I foes, the UNC women s soccer team was finally able to notch its first win of the season last Friday, besting Division I and Mid-Continent member Valparaiso by a 2-1 margin. UNC followed that up with a 2-0 blanking of St. Joseph s (Ind.) and takes that momentum into a pair of weekend games. The Bears will travel to Albuquerque to take on Mountain West member New Mexico on Friday at 6 p.m. The Bears and the Lobos have never met on the soccer field before and the test will be a stiff one for the Bears. UNM has yet to find a win this season, but their schedule has included the likes of Oklahoma, UC-Irvine and CS-Fullerton. Friday s contest will be the Lobos first home game of the season. UNC will stick around in Albuquerque until Sunday when they face Eastern New Mexico, once again on the Lobos home field. ENMU is in their inaugural season of soccer in 2003 and are a member of the Division II Lonestar Conference. Their campus is located in Portales, N.M., which is four and a half hours southeast of Albuquerque near the Texas border. The Zias opened their season with losses against College of the Southwest and Adams State before scoring their program s first ever victory over Wayland Baptist. After not scoring a goal in its first two games, UNC was given a lift from senior forward Jessica Brennan who returned from injury to score the game-winning goal against Valpo and score the final goal of the game against St. Joe s. Brennan now has 16 career goals, which puts her three out of 10th place on the Bears all-time career goal list. She also has 41 career points, only four out of 10th place on that list. Freshman forward Kady Hydrick has assisted on two of UNC s four goals this season and leads the team in that category. The other two goals of the season were also from the foot of a freshman Bear, as Mallorie Price scored against Valpo and Laura Hassebroek scored the game-winner at St. Joe s. Freshman forward Kristine Sweat scored UNW s lone goal of the lone in that opener against OU. About Eastern New Mexico: The Zias are in their inaugural year of soccer in 2003. They are a NCAA Division II school that is competiting in the Lone Star Conference. They are coached by Travis McCorkle who is in his first year as a head coach. ENMU lost their first two games of the season against College of the Southwest (3-2) and Adams State (2-0) before finally topping Wayland Baptist (4-0). head coach tim barrera Tim Barrera Alma Mater: Virgina Tech, 1986. Four-year starter (1981-84) at Virginia Tech and graduated as program s all-time leading scorer. UNC Earns First Division I Win of Season at Valpo: As the Bears make the four-year reclassification effort to Division I, the team can look back to Sept. 5 as their first win over a Division I team during the process, as the Bears topped Valpo 2-1. But it was not the program s first ever win over a Div. I squad, as in fact, UNC was a Division I soccer team from its NCAA club-varsity sport inception in 1985 until the NCAA Division II soccer level was created in 1988. From 1985-87, UNC played the likes of Stanford (who it beat 2-0 in 1987) and North Carolina (who UNC lost to 6-0 in 1987) among others. The win was also important to see how the Bears stack up against other Mid-Continent teams like Valpo, as the Mid-Con Conference is one of several possible conferences that the Bears could look to try to join in the future. Valpo was picked to finish third in the Mid-Con this season. Brennan Returns From Injury to Pace Bears and Climb All-Time Stat List: After returning from injury to play part of the game at Wyoming on Sept. 2, senior Jessica Brennan returned to full action against Valpo (Sept. 5) and St. Joe s (Sept. 7) and scored two goals in the Bears two victories. Brennan has now reached 16 career goals, only three away from joining the UNC all-time Top 10. She also needs only four points to join the Bears all-time points Top 10 list. Young Guns: With a wealth of newcomers to the program and some injuries to key players early this season, UNC started a very young lineup when they opened the season at Denver. UNC started four true freshman, two redshirt freshman and a transfer among their starting 11. Off the bench UNC brought three more true freshman, a redshirt freshman, a sophomore and a junior. Bears Make Move to Division I: On May 10, 2002 the UNC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a move for the UNC intercollegiate athletics program to NCAA Division I. The 2002-03 sports year marked the last season for the Bears in the North 2003 UNC Soccer Game Notes 3

Central Conference and the NCAA Division II level. This season the Bears begin a four-year reclassification period before officially becoming a Division I school in 2007. Over the next four years, UNC will be unable to compete in NCAA postseason competition. UNC will be competiting as an independent during the 2003-04 school year and will hopefully find conference affiliation before the end of the reclassification period. Soccer Program Gets First Inductee Into UNC Hall of Fame: On Sept. 19, the first former Bears soccer player will be inducted into the UNC Athletic Hall of Fame. Lisa Jacobsen (Loptien) played at UNC from 1985-88 and scored 41 goals and added 17 asissts (totaling 99 points), all of which were school records that stood for a decade. She currently ranks third all-time in school history in goals and assists and fifth in points. Jacobsen, a four-time allconference selection, was selected as the Colorado Sportswoman of the Year for collegiate soccer and was one of 12 total finalists (only two from Division II) for National Player of the Year. She was an ISAA All-American her senior season. Road Warriors: Of the 16 regular season games the Bears will be playing this year, only two of them will be on home soil. In their first year of Division I reclassification, UNC will play 14 total regular season matchups. After the Bears host in-state rival Metro State for an exhibition on Aug. 20, they won t play another home game until Oct. 8 when they host Carroll College. Then they will have another month break before hosting an Alumni Match exhibition on Nov. 1 and Colorado College on Nov. 2. Division I Schedule: UNC is wasting no time getting into a Division I schedule and this year as the schedule features eight regular season Division I opponents (Denver, Wyoming, Valparaiso, New Mexico, Utah State, Boise State, Creighton and Colorado College) including two (Denver and Creighton) that played in the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The schedule also features three matchups (UC-Davis and Utah Valley State, twice) with teams that are also making the transition to Division I along with the Bears. 2003 trends The Bears are... 2-2 Overall. 0-0 At Home. 2-2 At Away matches. 0-0 At Neutral sites. 2-2 In their last five matches. 1-2 Versus Division I teams. 1-0 Versus Division II/NAIA teams. 2-0 When they score first. 0-0 When leading at halftime. 1-1 When they take more shots than opponent. 1-1 When making more saves than opponent. 1-0 When taking more corner kicks than opponent. 0-2 When committing fewer fouls than opponent. 1-0 When recording more assists than opponent. 1-1 In one-goal games. 1-0 In two-goal games. 0-0 In five-plus goal games. 1-1 In shutout games. 0-0 In overtime games. 2-2 In games starting before 5:00 p.m. 0-0 In games starting after 5:00 p.m. 0-0 On Monday. 0-1 On Tuesday. 0-0 On Wednesday. 0-0 On Thursday. 1-1 On Friday 0-0 On Saturday. 1-0 On Sunday. 0-1 In August. 2-1 In September. 0-0 In October. 0-0 In November. media quick facts City:...
