Computer Society of India Annual Report for the year 2008-2009 Dear Members, I have great pleasure in presenting this Forty Fourth Report of the Computer Society of India for the year 2008-09. The Indian economy during the year 2008-09 showed declining trend of growth. Due to rising fuel and commodities prices the rate of growth was reduced to some extent. The year has been a significant and successful year for the Computer Society of India in terms of achieving various performance milestones which it had set upon itself at the commencement of the year. Operational Highlights 1. The Executive Committee (ExecCom) of the Society consisting of seventeen elected members and the immediate past President, entrusted with the responsibility of successfully running the Society met five times during the year at various locations across the country to review the functioning and activities of the Society and took decisions on important matters. 44th Annual Report 2008-2009 The Corporate Officers who are entrusted with the responsibility of conducting the day to day operations of the Society on behalf of the ExecCom had also met from time to time depending on the exigencies to consider important matters and ensure implementation of decisions in accordance with the strategic directions and policies of the ExecCom. 2. Some of the Regional Vice Presidents conducted regional meetings of their Chapters which facilitated interaction between them and the concerned Chapters and Divisional Chairmen. Additionally, the Regional Vice Presidents and Divisional Chairmen also met the Chapter representatives during the CSI Annual National Convention held in September 2008 at Chennai which provided them an opportunity for mutual interaction and drawing up plans for organizing conferences, seminars and workshops at various locations in association with the local Chapters. 3. The National Council of the Society consisting of the ExecCom members and Chairmen of Chapters normally meets once a year to review the functioning of the Society. Accordingly, the Council met during the CSI Annual National Convention held in September 2008 at Chennai. 4. The Forty Fourth Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on 12.09.2008 at Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai, the venue of the CSI-2008 Annual National Convention. 5. The CSI Think Tank is a core group of past Presidents and Fellows of the Society most of whom are very eminent and highly experienced professionals. The Think Tank normally meets the ExecCom during the CSI Annual National Convention and accordingly the group met the ExecCom on 11.09.2008 during the CSI-2008 Convention and gave valuable advice, guidance and suggestions. Some of which were as follows: a) The objectives of CSI are all encompassing and hence the areas of primary and secondary focus must be identified. b) Needs of potential and regular members should be assessed regularly and value to members should be enhanced. A model of survey should be considered. Concentrated efforts should be made to enrol IT professionals who can take ahead the mission and vision of CSI in tune with the growing pace of IT industry. Have a mix of media tools to attract the young and potential IT professionals. Institutions and academicians should be closely associated with CSI. c) Presently the cost of service to CSI Life Members is much more than the Life Membership fee paid by Life Members. A workable solution to overcome this problem need to be considered. d) Efforts should be made to involve Academicians in the activities of Education Directorate which should establish itself as the highest level certification and accrediting institute and expanded to more job market skills. Also, the Directorate should have a number of faculty persons to give advice on project to project basis. e) One National Student Convention should be held every year. The society should provide counselling and also assist in projects. Regular lectures by specialists should be conducted. f) Consider introduction of Industry Specific courses. g) Inter-disciplinary winning ideas and good content should be integral part of CSI. Good content should be available on the website. h) Voluntary services are the main principle and foundation of the Society. Members should fix up targets and have module to measure their work and activities to enable them to assess the achievement of their goals. Members should write articles regularly. i) CSI s nine TC (IFIP) Representatives must provide a leadership role in IT. j) Check the non-accountability of Chapters and Regions. There should be better pooling and sharing of resources from Chapters. k) Activate the CSI Special Interest Groups for organising programmes for members. l) Get International IT events to India. m) E-governance Awards should continue. The ExecCom has already implemented most of the above suggestions and also initiated steps to implement the other suggestions. Membership Highlights The success of any professional society like CSI primarily depends on the quality of the activities it conducts for the 3

Computer Society of India benefit of its members. Growth in membership is, to a very large extent, a reflection of the quality of activities conducted which provides satisfaction and thus acts as a driving force to attract new members. It is a matter of satisfaction that there was an all-round increase in membership during the year. The total membership increased from 46,461 as on to 48,772 as on 31.03.2009 i.e. an increase of 5%. While there was increase in every category of membership the increase in student membership was significant as can be seen from the following Tables 1 & 2 which give membership details for the last five years. The ExecCom wishes to record its appreciation of the vigorous efforts made by some Chapters and Education Directorate who were successful in increasing the membership. CSI Fellowships During the year the Society took pride and pleasure in conferring its Fellowships on the following senior life members in appreciation and recognition of their significant contribution to the growth of the Society and Information Technology in the country. 1. Satyanarayana Chapters As at the end of the year 2008-09 the Society had 66 Chapters some of which conducted events regularly and were quite vibrant during the year. Brief details of activities conducted by some of these Chapters and reported to HQ are given below; Ahmedabad The Chapter organized a National Conference on Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) for Differently Abled People (DAP) during Sept. 19-20, 2008 at Ahmedabad with the support of Blind People's Association (India), Ahmedabad. The Chapter organised a Inter School Computer Quiz-2008 on 21.12.2008 in association with C N Vidyavihar Computer Centre, Ahmedabad. A workshop on effective teaching was organised on 11.01.2009 4

44th Annual Report 2008-2009 at Chapter office. Allahabad On 14.12.2008, the Chapter conducted Software Quiz & Essay Competition at UPTEC, Allahabad. Bangalore An evening Lecture by Mr. Nithin Suresh was held on 4.04.2009 at the CSI-BC premises on Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). The Chapter in association with Business Continuity Management (BCM) Institute, India organized a one day certification program on Business Continuity Management Fundamentals & Awareness on 11.04.2008. The Chapter organized an evening lecture by Mr. Naresh Cuntoor, Research Engineer in the Signal Innovations Group on the Technical talk on Advances in face and gait recognition and Modeling activities in video streams on 21.04.2008. The Chapter organised a demo of an easy to use tool for test/ quiz generation and administration of online tests, called Testgen1. The Chapter arranged CSI-Rural activity for the residential tribal school children of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement [SVYM] organization in Heggada Devana Kote village, Mysore District on 27.11.2008. Calicut Mr. G P Sajeev, Lecturer, Department of Computer Science, Government Engineering College, Calicut delivered a talk on Some Unfamiliar GNU Tools The monthly program was conducted on 05.07.2008. Prof. (Dr.) N K Narayanan, Department of Information Science & Technology, Kannur University, Kerala delivered a talk on "Speech Technology, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow". Coimbatore The chapter organized a Free Orientation Programme on how to face the professional courses counseling on 29.06.2008 at Government college of Technology, Coimbatore. A lecture meeting on the topic Smart Solutions for Business using Embedded Systems jointly with Coimbatore Management Association on 05.09.2008. A lecture meeting on the topic "Face Recognition Tech." conducted on 24.09.2008 at Chapter Hall, Coimbatore. A lecture meeting on the topic Software Test Automation- Architecture & Implementation conducted on 22.10.2008 at Chapter Hall, Coimbatore. The Chapter along with Confederation of Indian Industry & young India had conducted a Special Monthly Lecture meeting on 09.01.2009 on the topic The Journey of a Successful IT Entrepreneur. Delhi The Chapter and IETE Delhi Centre jointly organized half day event on the theme Cyber Attacks: Technologies and Techniques and Digital Archiving on 23.05.2008 at India Internatioal Centre (IIC), New Delhi. Prof. K K Aggarwal, Vice Chancellor, GGS Indraprastha University, Delhi and President CSI delivered the Presidential address on the occasion. Ghaziabad A workshop on Managing Information Security Risks using Information System Audit on 26.04.08. The Chapter also organized a workshop on Agile Software Development Methodology on 03.05.08. Gwalior The Chapter also organized a Computer Quiz (CQ-2008) for the student of High school of Gwalior region at the Dr. Hargovind Khurana block of Institute of Technology Management (ITM), Sithouli, Gwalior on 27.09.2008. Kolkata The Chapter & Div-I (Hardware & Systems) in association with Dept. of Information Technology, Govt. of West Bengal organized National Conference on Research and Development in Hardware and Systems on 20-21.06.2008 at Kolkatta. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Debesh Das, Ministerin-Charge, Department of Information Technology, Government of West Bengal. The Chapter organized Computer Day on 13.12.2008 at CSI, Kolkata Chapter Office, sponsored by RCCIIT. Late Amal Roy Memorial Lecture was delivered by veteran IBM Engineer Mr. Amol Roy Chaudhury. The Chapter and Bengal Industrial Training Centre (a unit of the Science Association of Bengal) organized a seminar on Digital Library Management and Services in CSI auditorium. The Seminar was inaugurated by Mr. Sundar Sekhar, Secretary, Mass Education Dept. Govt. of West Bengal. Lucknow The Chapter organized a Lecture on Intelligent City on 11.04.2008 at TCS Hall, Lucknow. The Lecture was delivered by Dr. Sarfarz Ahmed, Retd. Chief Architect Planner, UPAVP, Lucknow. Mumbai The Chapter CIO Club organized an event to showcase how Customer Interaction Management (CIM) can make a big difference in effective servicing of customers. A keynote address was delivered by Prof. D B Phatak, IIT Bombay. The Chapter organised a seminar on the "Business Benefits of Software Asset Management (SAM)" on 29.08.2008. The Chapter under the auspices of its CIO Club along with The Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry had organised the Conference on Mobile Applications for Business on 30.09.2008. A special seminar was organized on Role of Information Security Professionals in Tackling Terrorism by the Interest Group on Security of CSI Mumbai Chapter jointly with ISACA, Mumbai Chapter. The Chapter organized a workshop on Transition requirements from ISO 9001:2000 to ISO 9001:2008. 5

Computer Society of India A national conference INDIA IT 2020 was held on 27 to 29.01.2009. Nashik An industrial visit was organised to the Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC) at New Mumbai on 24.05.2008. The Chapter organized a presentation by TUV, India on Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) on 17.06.2008. A seminar on Project Management on 31.08.2008 in association with Vinsys IT Services India Pvt. Ltd. A national seminar on IT Enabled Education Transformation (IEET) on 12-13.12.2008 in association with the Ashoka Institute of Management & Technology (AIMT), Nashik and CSI Div.-III. Noida The Chapter along with Noida chapter of Cost Accounts and NIRC conducted a seminar on Financial Risk Management and Assessment on 05.12.2008. Rourkela The Chapter also organized a Computer Quiz and an Elocution competition on 23.11.2008 for students. A technical talk IT Security-Technology & Psychology was delivered by Mr. N Bhattacharya, HOD (C&IT) Dept. of Rourkela Steel Plant on 12.12.2008. A technical talk Application of Nano Technology in Computers was delivered by Dr. R K Kotnala, Scientist F, NPL, New Delhi on 07.02.09. Solapur A seminar on Information Technology an Effective Tool for Progress on 03.05.2008. The chapter also published it s first bulletin named SCSI which stands for Solapur Chapter Computer Society of India. The Chapter organized a session on Antivirus A must for Computer for all CSI members. A special seminar on ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) was held at Laxmi Hydraulics Ltd. for all entrepreneurs businessmen and CSI members. Surat The Chapter invited various domain experts to talk on General Science Stream, a Medical and Paramedical Courses, Engineering Disciplines for engineering admissions in NIT's. Trichy A Lecture Programme on Dispersed Power Generators in association with The Institution of Engineers (India), Trichirapalli Local Centre. During the year some of the Chapters were inactive and not functioning in accordance with the guidelines of the Society resulting in problems and handicaps in the smooth and efficient functioning of the Society. The ExecCom had requested the Regional Vice Presidents concerned to contact and / or visit such Chapters to try and reactivate them. The ExecCom had also agreed to provide financial grants to needy Chapters for revival based on the recommendations of the Regional Vice Presidents. The relentless efforts were fruitful in few cases and the efforts for revival of other inactive Chapters are continuing. Though the ExecCom has the easier option of closing down such inactive Chapters, it is strongly of the view that all possible efforts of revival should be made in the larger interest of servicing the members of those Chapters. Watumull Inst. of Electronic Engg. and Computer Tech., Mumbai The Branch of Watumull Institute of Electronic Engineering and Computer Technology was Inaugurated on 05.03.2009. The CSI students committee felicitated Prof. Mane of Homi Bhabha Science Centre who was invited as Chief Guest for the function. Yavatmal The Student Branch organized Quiz Competition on C and JAVA on 15.01.2009. Reports of the activities received from the Student Branches concerned were published during the year in CSI Communications. However, it may be noted that many activities conducted by the Student Branches during the year could not be reported here due to non receipt of reports. National Student Convention-2009 S V Institute of Computer Studies in association with Ahmedabad Chapter hosted the National Student Convention under the series ENVISION at institute premises, Kadi during 07 to 08.02.2009. The convention was inaugurated on 07.02.2008 by Mr. Raj Kumar, IAS, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat. The inaugural function was presided by Mr. Maneklal M Patel, Chairman, Sarva Vidyalaya Kelavani Mandal, Kadi & President, Kadi Sarva Vishvavidyalaya, Gandhinagar. Prof. K K Aggarwal, President, CSI & Vice Chancellor, G.G.I.P. University, Delhi graced the event as a Chief Guest, Mr. P K Anand, Officiating Executive Director AM, ONGC, Mehsana was the Guest of Honor and Prof. (Dr.) P. Thrimurty, Head, Department of Computer Science, Acharya Nagarjun University, graced the occasion as a Keynote Speaker. In the convention Prof. K K Aggarwal released the CSI Student Branch Manual compiled by Mr. Bipin Mehta, National Student Co-ordinator, CSI. Support for Student Activities The Society is conscious of the fact that students of Engineering and Technology colleges are going to be the professional. The ExecCom decided to support Student Branches by which student members can conduct various activities and interact with industry and IT experts. This will help them in domain knowledge. It is expected that student members, on completion of the course, will enrolled themselves as associate members of Society. The important decisions taken by ExecCom are : Provide financial support upto 1/3rd amount of annual student membership fee received from the Branch to conduct activities. Provide 50,000 (including seed money of 15,000) to every Region to conduct Regional Student Convention 13

Computer Society of India at least once a year. Provide 1,00,000 (including seed money of 30,000) to organise an Annual National Student Convention once a year. To encourage research, provide funding for research projects of students which are identified and approved by CSI. Provide 50,000 to design and develop a portal for CSI Adhyayan for students. Nominate a National Student Coordinator (NSC)who will coordinate student activities with the assistance of Regional Student Coordinators. NSC will be a permanent invitee to all meetings of the ExecCom. Provide additional budgetary support if needed, to Regional student Coordinators to make student branches more active. The above decisions are expected to result in heavy financial implications to the Society but the ExecCom is strongly of the view that financial support is essential to ensure increase in student activities for the progress and growth of the students. CSI Events: The Society conducted National, Regional, Divisional and International events during the year at various locations across the country. Reports were published in CSI Communications regularly. Research Activities As part of its research activities the Society launched its scheme for R & D funding to help in carrying out minor research projects by Academicians / PG Students (Engineering Colleges and Technological Institutions) during the year. Details of the scheme were announced in CSI Communications and on CSI website. The Expert Committee of CSI scrutinized the applications received and based on its recommendations, the ExecCom approved to fund the research projects. The CSI Education Directorate was entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring the implementation and progress of the research projects in coordination with the Research Division of CSI. During the year the Dept. of Science & Indl. Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, decided to accord renewal of recognition of Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation to CSI for the period 01.04.2006 to 31.03.2009. Based on the renewal of recognition the Society has applied to the revenue authorities to grant the Society renewal of exemption for the period 01.04.2006 to 31.03.2009 from payment of income-tax. MOU with Computer Societies of other countries CSI s MOUs with Australian Computer Society, British Computer Society, Computer Society of Sri Lanka, and Singapore Computer Society continued during the year. These MOUs primarily provide for reciprocal membership arrangements besides certain other facilities to each others members. The theme issues have not only contributed to enhancing the quality of the publication but also provided great value and knowledge to our members. Since the special issues essentially contain more number of pages than normal, it has considerably increased the cost of the publication and contributed to the overall increase in the cost of servicing the membership. CSI Communications were also hosted on the CSI website for the benefit of the members. Prof. K K Aggarwal, President (2008-09) CSI, through his column From the President s Desk in CSI Communications regularly appraised the members about the plans, programmes and activities of the Society. Computer Science and Informatics, the quarterly Journal of the Computer Society of India, continued to enjoy its pride of place in the eyes of its readers because of the dedicated effort and hard work of Prof. P V S Rao, Editor. CSI Building at Chennai The project implemented during the previous year for strengthening, renovating and expanding the existing CSI National Head Quarters Building at Taramani, Chennai made considerable progress during the year. The Society has allocated sufficient funds to make Education Directorate a hub of learning and Research activities. The project when completed will enable the Society to provide additional infrastructure to successfully increase the educational, student, research and other activities of the Society. 14

44th Annual Report 2008-2009 Educational Activities : Software Testing Examinations: During the year CSI Education Directorate conducted the Software Testing Examinations at Bangalore, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur and Pune in which 401 candidates participated. BCS Professional Examinations : The Education Directorate has been conducting since 2003, BCS Professional Examinations on behalf of the British Computer Society. During the year examinations were held at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi centres in which 21 candidates appeared. M S E B Examinations : CSI Education Directorate is conducting examinations for the employees of Maharashtra State Electricity Board and its Corporation. CSI Nagpur Chapter is conducting courses for them. Education Directorate conducts examination and awards certificates. During the year 14 candidates appeared for these examinations. VMS Examinations for the Visually Challenged Students : Education Directorate conducted examination in VMS premises, Mumbai on WORD & EXCEL for the Visually Challenged of Victoria Memorial School for the Blind, Mumbai and total 22 students had registered for the examination of which 18 qualified. Young Talent Search In Computer Programming & SEARCC International Student Software Competition : During the year Education Directorate conducted the CSI Young Talent Search Contest in Computer Programming. A total of 120 school teams across the country, each of 3 students registered for the contest. After the first level regional contest held at 17 centres across the country, the final national level contest was held at Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Thandalam, Chennai. Two teams i.e. Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School, Chennai (Team-A) and Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Chennai (Team-B) were selected for the SEARCC International Competion. During the year the International Competition was hosted by CSI at Chennai along with the CSI Annual Convention. Two teams from India, one team from Australia and two teams from Sri Lanka participated. Australian Team won the First Prize and Indian Team (Team-B) bagged the second prize. Award function was held on 12th September 2008 at Chennai Trade Centre to present Dr. F C Kohli Award to the winning teams. The first and second prizes were sponsored by TCS @ $1000 and $500 respectively. Cognizant Technologies Solutions, Chennai came forward and sponsored 3,00,000/- for the event. Workshop : CSI Education Directorate & Division-V (Education & Research) of CSI jointly organized a Technology Appreciation workshop on "Enterprise Network Architecture and Design" on 29th & 30th August 2008 at CSI NHQ, Chennai. Special Preview Talk in India by ISS-NUS : Institute of Systems Science (ISS), a centre at National University of Singapore (NUS) has been conducting the NUS Graduate Diploma in Systems Analysis programme for the past 25 years. ISS-NUS has sought for the support of CSI in promoting this progarmme among the student community in India thru Mr.H.R. Mohan, Chairman, Division-II, CSI. The faculty member Dr. Ramanathan from ISS/NUS addressed potential students, their parents and teachers at five centres (New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore & Chennai) in India between 21.04.2008 and 29.04.2008. The respective CSI Chapters conducted the Preview talk. An amount of 1,00,000/- (Rupees One lakh only) received from ISS-NUS by CSI Education Directorate was distributed to each of CSI Chapter for making arrangements for the Preview Talk. MOU with Infycareer : CSI Education Directorate entered into an MOU with M/S Infycareer, Chennai on 11.09.2008 for imparting Finishing School training apart from other technical training to final year Engineering College students. The training closes the gap between requirement of IT industry and the finished material at Engineering Colleges, particularly in terms of English language and soft skills. The programme will focused on students from CSI Intuitional members. R & D Project for the year 2008-2009 : CSI received 5 project proposals from Professional Colleges. The project reports were evaluated by Prof. H R Vishwakarma and Prof. N. Ramanathan and have been approved. Total amount sanctioned for the year is 38,500/-. International Activities 1. IFIP IFIP Executive Board meeting was held at New Delhi during 03 to 06.03.2009. TC3 meeting on Life Long Learning was also held during this period 2. SEARCC The Twenty Fourth Conference of SEARCC 2008 was held during August 2008 at Colombo, Sri Lanka. President Prof. K K Aggarwal attended this conference on behalf of CSI. SEARCC Student Software Programming Contest was organised during CSI 2008 Convention at Chennai. Five Teams, one from Australia and two each from Sri Lanka and India had participated. Celebrations of Independence Day and Republic Day : Independence Day was celebrated in CSI National Head Quarters Building at Taramani, Chennai on 15.08.2008. All the Officials of CSI at Chennai along with CSI members attended the function. 15

Computer Society of India Republic Day was celebrated in CSI National Head Quarters Building on 26.01.2009. Several members from Chennai Region attended the function. Special Interest Groups of CSI: SIG by its very nature is a focused group and its activity is national in character. The SIG membership is through groups and essentially to enthuse academic and research community to participate. Though the SIG is having functional autonomy it is essentially working with the concerned Division to be within the frame work of the CSI Constitution & Byelaws. CSI-SIG-CS (Computing Standards) CSI ANNUAL AWARDS CSI Nihilent e-governance Awards : The main objective of the CSI-Nihilent e-governance Awards is to recognize and appreciate the successful efforts of states and organizations in achieving good governance using ICT. 44th Annual Report 2008-2009 Best Chapter Awards Category-I : Delhi Chapter, Kolkata Chapter Category-II : Ahmedabad Chapter, Tiruchirapalli Chapter Category-III : Allahabad Chapter, Coimbatore Chapter, Gwalior Chapter, Nashik Chapter, Ranchi Chapter Elections As in the previous year the CSI elections at the national level for the various elective offices for the year 2009-10 / 2010-11 were conducted electronically during the year. Simultaneously, some of the proposed amendments to the CSI Constitution were also balloted and approved electronically. With the experience gained during the last two years in successfully conducting the CSI elections electronically the ExecCom is strongly felt that Chapter elections too should be concurrently conducted electronically. Accordingly the Chapter elections were initiated along with ExecCom Elections. However, only 15 Chapters participated in the process. CSI Website During the year a contract was entrusted to M/s. Sakshay, Delhi for the design and deployment of CSI website. The new website was commissioned after successful trials in July 2008. Remembrance Prof. A K Pathak, Past President, CSI passed away on September 6, 2008. Prof. Pathak was also a Chairman of Research Committee of CSI. The Society has lost a prominent IT Professional & a dedicated member who will ever be remembered for his contribution and sustained support to CSI & IT industry. Many CSI veterans and others paid rich tributes to his outstanding contribution to the CSI and the society at large. Felicitation of Mrs. Priyalata Pal After 27 years of dedicated and selfless service to Computer Society of India, Executive Secretary Mrs. Priyalata Pal retired from the Society in July 2008 on health ground. Many Past Presidents, Fellows, Chairperson of the Chapters and Senior Members attended the felicitation function organised by CSI Mumbai Chapter on 23.05.2009. Members appreciated the outstanding contribution of Mrs. Pal to CSI and its members by her efforts and dedicated service to transform the Society into a successful professional body. Many Senior Members shared their experiences of Mrs. Pal s support for the benefit of CSI. Acknowledgement The overall performance of the Society during the year 2008-09 was quite satisfactory in spite of several limitation and unforeseen circumstances. The ExecCom has been making relentless efforts at improving the performance and enhancing the image of the Society further, and counts on the contribution and support of its members and all others concerned. Computer Society of India Treasurer's Report It gives me great pleasure to present the audited annual accounts of the Society for the year ending March 31, 2009 along with the Auditor s Report. Members will kindly observe from the Auditors Report that the quality and procedure adopted for maintenance of accounts are in conformity with the requirements of the Public Societies Registration Act No. 1 of 1350. Total assets of the Society have increased to Rs 1296.11 lakhs as on 31.3.2009 as against Rs 1090.99 lakhs as on 31.3.2008 registering an increase of Rs 205.12 lakhs during the year. The revenue surplus during the year was Rs 96.34 lakhs as compared to Rs 29.40 lakhs in the previous year. Lastly, I take this opportunity to express my grateful thanks to the Executive Committee, Managing Committees of the various Chapters of the Society and the Finance Committees of major events for the co-operation extended during the year. 44th Annual Report 2008-2009 SCHEDULE - H NOTES ANNEXED TO AND FORMING PART OF CONSOLIDATED ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH, 2009 1. Disclosure of Accounting Policies: a) Previous year accounts have been re-grouped wherever necessary. b) 41 Chapters are consolidated. The previous year figures are not comparable as consolidated chapters are not same. c) Assets are carried on the basis of closing written down value and no historical cost details exist, other than for building block. Depreciation is charged on written down value as per rates prescribed under Income-tax Act, 1961. d) Accounts are maintained on accrual basis, except that Membership fee is accounted on receipt basis. e) As per EXECOM resolution the audit fees for National and Regional Auditors for all chapters are charged to CSI- HQ accounts. 2. Contingencies and events occurring after the Balance Sheet date: a) As per information given to us the Kanpur, Patna, Jaipur & Raipur Chapters are put under probation, having no activity. b) The Income-tax Exemption u/s 35 is pending under renewal (Applied) from 01-4-2003. We expect the exemption certificate to be received. However, there is no tax liability u/s 11 and or section 44A and all IT Return are filed up to date. 3. Prior Period items and changes in accounting policies: There are no changes in accounting policies followed by the Head Quarters or the Chapters. 4. Depreciation Accounting: a) This accounting standard is discussed in note 1 above. b) The quantum of depreciation provided is adequate considering the lifetime of the assets. 5. Revenue Recognition: Membership subscriptions are accounted on receipt basis. 6. Accounting for Fixed Assets: (a) Fixed assets are valued at cost less depreciation. (b) Fixed Assets of CSI-SIG egovernance is consolidated as per accounts given to us, audited by CSI-SIG egovernance Auditor. 7. Accounting for effects of changes in Foreign Exchange Rates: Receipts in foreign exchange are accounted on the basis of credit given by bank. 8. Accounting for Investments: Investments are made in Fixed Deposits with Banks and public sector companies. These investments are stated at cost price. 9. Disbursement of Expenses: Hon. Treasurer is authorised to conduct the fiscal affairs of the society and maintain records thereof, who will also be executing withdrawals of society funds under authority of EXECOM (vide Rule 4.3.2. read with 4.4.2.d.) subject to overall legislative directive and guidance and authority of general body (vide Rule 4.1.2.) and during course of audit disbursement are verified in the background of these provisions. 10. General Remarks: The accounts of CSI-SIG egovernance, for the year ended 31st March, 2009,are consolidated relying on Audit Report of auditor other than the National Auditor.
