What we do So you ve signed up to run the Virgin Money London Marathon. Now you have 26.2 miles stretching out before you, and a fundraising target of at least 1,200 to reach. This is where the hard work begins. But don t worry! We are here to support you every step of the way. We are Shaw Trust, a national charity working to create brighter futures for people in our communities. We support thousands of people every year by providing employment opportunities, skills development training, and health and wellbeing services across the UK. We also sponsor eleven academy schools, run six social enterprises and over 50 charity shops. And, let s not forget our 1,400 plus volunteers who add value to our services. We understand how long-term unemployment, limited skills, mental illness, physical and/or learning disabilities, a criminal record, addiction, family and/or housing issues can impact on people s life and work goals. Each day we support people to realise their full potential. And we believe everyone has something to offer. With your support we will be able to do even more. 2 3
Where your money goes For the last few years the money raised by marathon runners has gone towards supporting the Shaw Education Trust schools - and so will the money raised by you in 2018. Thanks to the efforts of runners like you we ve been able to improve the experience of our students. For example, in 2017 we ve purchased a specially adapted minibus for our students with additional needs at Blackfrairs Academy. It s used for educational trips and work experience aimed at improving independent living skills. In previous years, the money our runners raised went towards creating a new sensory room to help provide interactive experiences for pupils with a wide range of special educational needs. It s also contributed to building a new interactive and vibrant playground for students who have special educational needs. even more determined I m to reach my goals. Fundraising ideas Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best, after all they re classics for a reason. 1. Give people the chance to unleash their inner Mary Berry and host a cake sale. 2. Time to clear the air? Install a Swearbox either at home or in the office and charge people 1 every time something offensive passes their lips you ll be quids in. 3. Ask your office if you can host a dress down day, and ask everyone to donate 1 for the privilege. 4. Pack shopping bags! Grab some of your most loyal family and friends and head on down to your local supermarket. You will be surprised with how much money you can make by packing some shopping for a couple of hours. 5. Turn the lights down, grab the popcorn and pop in your favourite movie* for a Classic Movie Marathon. Charge for tickets and snacks and you have yourself an easy way to raise some money. *do check copyright laws beforehand. 6. Who doesn t love a three-legged race? Cash in on nostalgia by charging teams to enter your old school sports day. 7. Give up the Christmas and birthday presents. Ask your family and friends to swap the dodgy gifts and donate to your online giving page instead. 8. A big Sunday lunch. Take a leaf out of Jamie and Nigella s books (literally!) and host everyone s favourite meal of the week. Contact your local shops and ask for donations for the ingredients, and get those roasting tins out! 9. Run a bootcamp train and fundraise at the same time! 10. Always wanted to jump out a plane? Take the chance to do something crazy and get sponsored to do so. What s the biggest thing you can think of? Go for it! 8 9
