Statement:IEEE is the most successful technical organizationn in the world. As a member of the IEEE CE Board of Governors, I will endeavor to further the developments of the Society, to position the organization and undertake the challenges in the rapidly changingg global community that we serve. To continue the promotion and collaboration with industry, government, academia and international Standards Development Organizations. To increase the value proposition and grow membership of the CE Society and the IEEE by offering opportunities for our members to participate in Society leadership, conferences, publications and standards. Closer alliances between the Society and industry are essential to the survival and vitality of IEEE. We must foster open relationships between the CE Society and other societies is fundamental to the long-term success of Society. The boundaries of technology are blurring the traditional borders between societies, so we must proactively collaborate and work with societies in areas, such as, Future Directions. Simply stated, we must engage industry to contribute in the CE Society, involving them in our conferences, publications and standards. We must grow our conferences with the inclusion of IEEE OUs, like, the Standards Association and derive a method of collectively working together with other societies. I am motivated by, experienced in, and committed to engaging and educating academia and industry on new and developing technologies that will influence the consumer technology landscape. We must encourage a strong and dynamic volunteer organization to establish IEEE CE center and resource for developing technologies. I have a track record to prove my passion for helping many with new technologies to becomee an integral part of successful companies. I view this as a great honor to proactively and resiliently lead IEEE CE Society. I appreciatee your support and look forward to serving the community of IEEE CE members. BOB FRANKSTON(S 73-M 77-SM 03-F 11-LF 15)has been working with computers since he first learned to program 1963. His Consumer Electronics background goes back to his childhood with a father who manufactured consumer electronics products. He has been using software to create products and services since he was in highh school. Bob attended MIT he used the opportunity to broaden his education beyond computing to include cognitive psychology, business, clinical decision making and more. He also worked to make computing more available to students. This theme of giving people access to the power of technology rather than just giving narrow solutions has been the hallmark of his career. He was fortunate to discover computing as it happened and to have had the opportunity share his passion and play a role in creating today s PC industry. Technical & Professional Experience:Bob s professional career started in 1966 on Wall St at White-Weld where he helped to create one of the first, if not the first online financial services. He has been online ever since. At MIT (BS Math, BS CS 1970, Masters and Engineers in CS and EE in 1974) he worked on the Multics project and did his thesis on providing services on an information utility. He received the William L Steward Jr award for co-founding an organization that gave students access to computing for their own projects. In 1979, with his friend Dan Bricklin, Bob wrote VisiCalc, the first electronic spreadsheet. Later at Lotus Development he created Lotus Express. At Microsoft, he worked to shift the role of the Internett in our lives by giving people control over their own connectivity, AKA home networking. Bob is a fellow of the IEEE, ACM, and the Computer History Museum. More: http://rmf.vc/ /bio IEEEE Accomplishments:Bob has been a member of the IEEEE since 1975 and is a Fellow and a Distinguished Lecturer. He writes the Bits Versus Electrons in the IEEE Consumer industry whose roots lie in creating value using hardware. Electronics magazine where he brings his software perspective to an He has been involved with the CE society from when he first spoke at the first ISCE in 1997 has been keynote speaker at a number of CE Society conferences as well as a lecturer. He has worked on the Technical Program committee of a number of CE Society conferences, helped as an international advisor, and supported CE conferences in general. He is a founder of the Boston Chapter of the CE society. Statement:The CE Society has a special role in the IEEE as it transitions from a society focused on technology to one in which the technology is a resource and userss (AKA consumers) are increasingly able to craft their own solutions and create their own value. Navigating this change requires an understanding of the interplay of technology, business, economics and people (not just consumers) ). Today s Internet is one face of this change but as an example of a way to use available resource and to the extent, it is not a providedd service. To accomplish this the society and, for that matter, the organization as a whole, has a challenge in getting ahead of this change rather than looking inward. The CE society is the face of this change as the technology becomes a tool rather than staying hidden within products. It should provide the context for the IEEE as a whole.
