Senior medical staff consists of 22 consultants, 5 registrars, 4 fellows (EP, Echo and Interventional) and 2-3 junior medical staff. The unit has clinical interests in all of the major subspecialities of cardiology: interventional cardiology, clinical and invasive electrophysiology (device implantation, ablation for arrhythmia), heart failure (optimising cardiac function through pharmacologic and device therapy, exercise and outpatient support), valvular heart disease and non-invasive cardiac imaging (transthoracic, transoesophageal and stress echocardiography). Research involvement in clinical and higher degree research projects are available in areas such as vascular function and biology, interventional cardiology, heart failure and valvular heart disease. Rotations monthly rotations throughout the year include the cardiac care ward (5E), consultation service for the hospital, cardiology outpatient clinics, cardiac catheterisation laboratory and the echocardiography laboratory. There is also the potential for rotations to other cardiology departments at teaching hospitals in the Melbourne metropolitan area and Bendigo Health. Meetings: attendance and participation in the weekly departmental meetings, preparation and presentation of patients at the cardiac surgical conference. Approximately 4,500 cardiology outpatients are seen per year. 15-20 consults per week from general medical and specialty units within the hospital. Advanced trainees are expected to undertake research projects during the two core years, with opportunities to present abstracts at meetings and manuscripts for publication. The position provides excellent exposure to all facets of inpatient and outpatient cardiology including echocardiography and non-invasive imaging, heart failure, clinical and invasive electrophysiology and interventional cardiology. Austin Health has a 24/7 primary PCI service for acute myocardial infarction. Close links exist with the Department of Cardiac Surgery providing trainees with an overview of peri-operative cardiac surgical management. An accredited cardiology advanced training rotation will be established in 2011 with Bendigo Base Hospital. There are regular clinical/educational meetings every week including the cardiology grand round, echocardiography and non-invasive imaging (MRI/CT), cardiac catheterisation and intervention, ECG interpretation and electrophysiology and the cardiac surgical conference (joint meeting with cardiac surgery).
