Hector House (Glasgow) Ltd Care Home Service 2 Hector Road Shawlands Glasgow G41 3RL Telephone: 0141 632 5767 Type of inspection: Unannounced Inspection completed on: 8 August 2017 Service provided by: Hector House (Glasgow) Ltd Service provider number: SP2003000206 Care service number: CS2008173617

About the service We carried out an unannounced inspection of Hector House on the 7 and 8 of August 2017. During our visits, we spoke with people living in the home, some relatives and staff. We also observed the experiences of people living there, staff practice and we looked at a range of records relevant to the inspection. We also received some completed Care Standards Questionnaires before our visit. The home is in a large converted semi detached Victorian villa which is located in the southside of Glasgow. It is beside a railway station and bus stops and also within walking distance of a range of local facilities including shops and places to eat. The accommodation is on three levels and there is a stair lift in place. All bedrooms have an en-suite shower or bathroom. There is a living room with large screen television, a separate dining room and a small "Snug" also with a television. There is a paved area at the back of the home with seating and a range of potted greenery and plants. The aims and objectives of the service are to: "...meet all of your assessed needs in relation to accommodation, meals, activities, support and residential care. The service that you will receive shall be flexible and designed to meet your needs specified in your care plan. We shall employ and ensure at all times sufficient, qualified and suitably trained and experienced staff are available to deliver the service." We carried out an unannounced inspection of Hector House on the 7 and 8 of August 2017. During our visits, we spoke with people living in the home, some relatives and staff. We also observed the experiences of people living there, staff practice and we looked at a range of records relevant to the inspection. We also received some completed Care Standards Questionnaires before our visit. What people told us We received a range of positive feedback from people who were living in the home and their visitors. People were complimentary about the care and support provided and the following comments were made: "The staff care for me well and I enjoy staying here." "The home is very clean and comfortable." "... a very happy home. the residents are well looked after... very sociable environment and everyone is invited to join in activities when visiting." "... always kept up to date well looked after". page 2 of 7

Self assessment Providers are not currently required to submit a self assessment. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good not assessed 5 - Very Good not assessed What the service does well We received a lot of very positive feedback from people living in the care home and their relatives. It was clear that people appreciated the care and support they or their relative received. There was a relaxed atmosphere during our visits and it was clear that people living there and their visitors felt very relaxed and comfortable in the various areas of the care home and also in the company of staff. The provider and manager were accessible and visible and it was clear that they were both directly involved in the day to day running of the home. They and the staff team were up to date and knowledgeable about people's needs and wishes and had daily contact with people who lived in and visited the home and people appreciated this. We saw that staff were attentive to people's needs and for example, people were supported to be involved in a range of activities. These included group activities in the home and also supporting people to go shopping or for a coffee locally. We also found that a lot of work was carried out to support people when it was identified that they had a particular area of interest. This included building positive links with local community resources. There was a comprehensive computerised care planning system in place as well as paper personal files for each person. We saw that a range of relevant records was in place such as risk assessments and care plans. There was some very good detail in these about people's needs and how these were being supported. This also included information about people's choices and wishes in relation to their care and support which showed that there was a focus on the person. We also saw that referrals were made to external health professionals as and when people needed this to happen. This included the community psychiatric nurse, GP, care home liaison nurse and dentist. In relation to staff development, there was a clear induction programme in place which included the opportunity to shadow other staff. Staff had access to a range of training opportunities which included e-learning courses and the chance to undertake SVQs. Regular supervision meetings were held which supported discussion about training and development needs. In discussion, the manager demonstrated a positive commitment to supporting staff development. page 3 of 7

What the service could do better When we looked at the care plans, we found that the way in which some information was written did not fully reflect staff knowledge of the person and what they were doing each day to support them. This was partly due to the way the computerised system was set up. We also found there were some gaps in relation to information about reviews of care and what the outcomes were for people, for example, if they had been unwell or had had a fall. We discussed this with the manager who agreed to review this with the staff team. We also discussed the benefit of reviewing the range and type of training available to staff to make sure that it fully reflected the needs of people currently living in the home and also to make sure that staff were supported to keep up to date with all relevant best practice guidance. We signposted the manager to a range of links to support staff development including the Promoting Excellence training. http://www.sssc.uk.com/workforce-development/supporting-your-development/promoting-excellence-indementia-care We also discussed the value of exploring ways of assessing the impact of training such as, carrying out more observational monitoring and supervision with staff.
