Overview The emergence of advanced technologies is transforming today s global investment landscape. There is an opportunity for Ontario s businesses to adopt these technologies in order to become leaders in the global marketplace. Over time, the Province has purposefully built an innovation ecosystem to foster a collaborative business environment, support Ontario s entrepreneurs and promote global competitiveness. Timeline: Ontario s Innovation Ecosystem Development Next Wave: Here & Now 2016 Over $600 million in investments towards transformative technology platform Increasing the number of STEM graduates in Ontario by 25 % $30M to grow applied masters' graduates in artificial intelligence related fields to 1,000 per year. Business Growth Initiative introduced. THE ARC OF ONTARIO S INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM 2013 2008 2006 Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs (ONE) introduced. Youth Job Strategy released with $295 million budget commitment to support youth through Campus-Linked Accelerators and Ontario Campus Entrepreneurship Activities. Ontario Network of Excellence developed, the first provincial program and service network. $160 million budget commitment to target the innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship continuum. 2003 Ontario Commercialization Network revamped. Engaged over 200 businesses & community leaders. 2001 First investments in Research Parks and Incubators. Summer Company programs launched.190 students businesses started. Business Self-Help Desks begin to transform offices in 29 communities.
1 Ontario s Transformative Technology Projects 5G-NGN (Fifth Generation and Next Generation Networks) $130M to support two projects to advance the development and commercialization of 5G and next-generation technology networks. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Vector Institute $$200+ M to create an institute with a specific focus on deep learning and machine learning more broadly. Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN) $80M to create a connected and autonomous vehicle innovation network across Ontario. IBM-I3 $22.75M to provide SMEs with technological resources, physical space and expertise to scale their companies, as well as access to supercomputing technology and Watson. Quantum Technologies $20M committed in Budget 2017, to support the development of cutting-edge research, the training of highly qualified personnel and academics in the Quantum Valley Ideas Lab. Cybersecurity $4M pilot project with the OCE to partner start-ups with financial institutions to accelerate the growth of cybersecurity and fintech start-ups, and support the adoption of emerging cyber technologies by financial institutions. Advanced Manufacturing $35M to the Advanced Manufacturing Consortium to help develop long-term industrial innovation projects. $230M of federal Supercluster funding and $750M of private sector support to implement Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster initiative.

1 Transformative Technology Interconnections Transformative technologies are interconnected and cut across a number of key sectors. SMEs will have the opportunity to select tools and the firms they want to engage. The platforms / tools can also be aligned by sectors / verticals.
