I like to mention the Day early as it requires some planning if a Chapter wants to make an impact on its community. Past activities have included Viola sales at malls and military bases, school presentations, appearances on local media, and displays where appropriate. If you need anything to support your effort, now is the time to order from our official vendors or from the MOPH Supply Room. MOPH Story in VIETNAM. The June 2013 edition of VIETNAM has a long article on MOPH, covering its history and current operations. Both the National Adjutant and the National Service Officer are quoted extensively and the article leads with a photograph of former MOPH National Commander James M. Blaylock in MOPH regalia. VIETNAM is a full-color history magazine published bi-monthly which covers the Vietnam War. It was founded in 1988 by the late Colonel Harry G. Summers, Jr. Colonel Summers served in the U.S. Army in both Korea and Vietnam, where he was twice wounded and decorated for valor. The magazine is published in Leesburg VA and should be available on newstands across the country. Wheelchair and Scooter Rentals for Convention. Charles Delaney, Manager Stamp Manufacturing, USPS wrote: The Purple Stamp issue has not been removed from sale. What has occurred is that the Purple Heart issue 114900 was removed from sale on December 31, 2012 and has been replaced by Purple Heart issue 115400 that was issued on 9/4/12. There is currently 151 million stamps available at the Stamp Distribution Centers and there are no plans to remove the Purple Heart stamps at this time or in the future. Please pass the word and lay such bad rumors to rest. Visit Us. Yours in Patriotism, Jack APRIL 18,1942 DOOLITTLE S B-25 MITCHELL BOMBERS ATTACK JAPAN! Seventy-one years ago, then LtCol Jimmy Doolittle, USAAF, led his squadron of sixteen B-25 medium bombers off the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to attack Japan in the first strategic offensive action since Pearl Harbor. The B-25B s carried jerry cans of avgas to help extend their range for recovery in China. It was the first time that such large aircraft were launched from a Navy carrier. All the bombers reached Japan, hitting military and industrial targets, mostly in the Tokyo area. Since the planes couldn t return to the carrier, they headed to China after dropping their ordnance, hoping that friendly Chinese units would help them return home. Fifteen B-25 s went into China, but one, with unusually high fuel consumption, flew to Russia. Doolittle s crew bailed out safely over China and was rescued by Chinese guerrillas. Other aircrews were not so fortunate. Although most eventually reached safety with the help of friendly Chinese, several crewmembers lost their lives after being captured by Japanese forces in China. Doolittle received the Medal of Honor from President Roosevelt for planning and leading his raid on Japan. The crew that went to Russia was interned until smuggled out in 1943. The Doolittle Raid is viewed by historians as a major morale-building victory for the United States. Although the damage was relatively minor, the raid showed the Japanese that their homeland was vulnerable to air attack and forced them to withdraw several front-line fighter units from the Pacific war zone for homeland defense. When asked from where the Tokyo raid was launched, Roosevelt coyly said its base was Shangri-La, a fictional paradise from a movie with the same name. And speaking of movies, the 1944 film, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, starring Spencer Tracy as Doolittle, was based on a book with the same title by Doolittle Raider pilot Ted Lawson. LAST WORDS It is well. I die hard, but am not afraid to go. General George Washington, 14 December 1799

He received three Purple Heart Medals while serving in Vietnam with the First Battalion, 26th Marines in 1966-67 and here is what a fellow Marine wrote about Helm: Ed was one of the bravest Marines I served with in Vietnam. He always volunteered to take the point on every patrol I accompanied him on. I was with him in December 1966, the day he got his first of three Purple Hearts. He was on the point.. and jumping across a creek bed he landed on a bed of 3- ft long punjii sticks. He somehow managed to miss all but one which caught him on the side of his neck. One inch to the left and it would have been Ed s last Purple Heart. In February 1967, Ed was on a country fair operation and got a piece of metal shrapnel in the nose, just missing his eye. Purple Heart #2. Near the end of that February, Ed was a member of a squad that went on a search and destroy mission. He and his fire-team buddies had two VC trapped in a tunnel. One VC came out of the tunnel complex behind Ed and opened fire, hitting him in the chest and both arms. Purple Heart #3. Ed was a good man, a good friend and will never be forgotten. He is now with his beloved wife Mary. [From the MOPH Membership Files]

April 2013 Page 6 ORGANIZATIONS SUPPORTING VETERANS SEMPER FI FUND The injured Marine Semper Fi Fund (SFF) is a 501c)(3) nonprofit set up to provide immediate financial support for injured and critically ill members of the US Armed Forces and their families. SFF directs urgently needed resources to post 9-11 service members within 24-72 hours of request. The Fund was started by Karen Guenther, a registered nurse and spouse of an active duty Marine, and group of dedicated military spouses who organized welcome home activities at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital in 2004 for the first wave of wounded sailors and Marines from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Realizing that a growing number of military families were facing similar situations, Karen assembled a dynamic team that established SFF as a nation-wide non-profit so that wounded and critically ill service members and their families would never be alone or forgotten. SFF provides relief for financial needs that arise during hospitalization and recovery as well as assistance for those with perpetuating needs. Its program provides support in a variety of ways including Service Member and Family Support, Specialized & Adaptive Equipment, Adaptive Housing, Adaptive Transportation, Education and Career Transition Assistance, PTSD and TBI Support, Team Semper Fi, and American s Fund (a self funded program administered by SFF that currently assists those service members with catastrophic injuries in intensive care units at our nation s military hospitals, regardless of military branch). SFF s streamlined structure keeps overhead very low less than 6% - because it realizes every dollar saved can be put to better use elsewhere. It is one of two veteran charities to receive an SA+ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy. Charity Navigator gave SFF their highest rating of Four Stars. Beyond the staggering costs of hospitalization and treatment, related expenses typically pile up quickly. Family members may lose income when taking time off work to visit and care for injured loved ones. Childcare, plane fare, and other travel expenses often stretch a family s budget to the breaking point. SFF works closely with the Marine Corps, Navy, and hospitals nationwide to identify and assess the needs of specific families. Many of those SFF works with must have their homes modified or even have to move into a new home designed to accommodate a serious disability; adaptive transportation is needed. The list goes on and on and so do the bills. That s where SFF comes in. Since SFF was established in 2004, it has issued more than 53,000 grants totaling more than $70 million to over 8,800 servicemen and their families. Although some support comes from the business community, SFF depends largely on individual tax deductible contributions. You can send your contributions to: Semper Fi Fund, PO Box 555193, Camp Pendleton CA 92055-5193. For more information about the Fund, go to www.semperfifund.org. Karen Guenther, President, Founder and CEO of the Semper Fi Fund was named the Marine Corp Spouse of The Year and Military Spouse of the Year for her outstanding achievements in the care and support of wounded veterans and their families.

An unordered shot heard around the world began the American Revolution. The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the Navy s WWII scout plane and dive bomber, best known for delivering the fatal blows to Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. During its time of service, 1940-1944, it was the world s best dive bomber, equipped with distinctive perforated split flaps or dive brakes that allowed it to make near vertical attacks. SBD s relatively heavy gun armament - two forward firing.50 in Browning machine guns and either one or two flex-mounted.30 in machine guns at the rear of the cockpit were effective against the lightly-built Japanese fighters. One pilot was attacked by three enemy Zeros - he shot down two and cut off the wing of the third with his wing tip in a head-on pass. A total of 5,936 SBDs were produced for the war. Its battle record shows it sank 6 Japanese carriers, 14 cruisers, 6 destroyers, 15 transports and scores of lesser craft.
