Asterio Appi, Director of the USP Nauru Campus, Mrs. Alamanda Lauti, and Principle of NSS, Mr. Richard Lewis attended the dinner function. In his speech, Amb. Chow first congratulated the five young outstanding Taiwan scholarship winners. He hoped that the students would make good use of the opportunity to study hard in Taiwan to expand their knowledge, and make friends with local Taiwanese and international students. After graduation, students will still have the opportunity to continue to study at higher levels or contribute back to the Nauruan society in their specialist field. So far, there are a total of 6 Nauruan students receiving a scholarship in Taiwan. Minister Scotty delivered her speech and thanked the Government of Taiwan for providing scholarships to help Nauruan students further their education abroad. She stated that the scholarships enhance human resources, so she encourages students to study hard, and can better serve the country in the future. Deputy Speaker, Hon. AsterioAppi who was also one of the Taiwan Scholarship receivers a couple years back and graduated from Pingtung University of Science and Technology, was invited to share the valuable experiences during his study in Taiwan. Director, Mrs. Alamanda Lauti, and Principle Mr. Richard Lewis, also encouraged the students to cherish their precious five-year study in Taiwan and be brave to pursue their dreams. Mushroom Cultivation At the end of August, Dr. Chen Jintong from Mushroom Laboratory of Taiwan Agriculture Research Institute of the Council of Agriculture visited Nauru in order to assess the feasibility of planting mushrooms in Nauru. Most of the edible mushrooms grow in temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius and high humidity 90%. Only a few kinds of mushrooms can grow under 28 degrees Celsius and high humidity 90%. Nauru s temperature is over 0 degrees Celsius throughout the year and the humidity is often 80%. The natural environment in Nauru does not meet the criteria for growing mushrooms. However, the Taiwan Technical Mission will assist Nauru in conducting small-scale production trials of certain species of mushrooms by using some technical facilities. If the trial is successful, then a mass production plan will follow in the future. We look forward to hopefully seeing local Nauruan mushrooms planted everywhere in Nauru.
