Students are responsible for knowing the contents of the Catalog. Students may not progress in the nursing programs if the correct course sequence is not taken. COLLEGE of SOUTHERN MARYLAND NURSING PROGRAMS Nursing is a healthcare career open to men and women with various goals, interests, and capabilities. Many job opportunities are available for beginning nurses in acute care facilities, clinics, health maintenance organizations, industries, and doctors offices. The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) offers courses that prepare a student for a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Registered Nurse (RN) through one of the following: Practical Nursing (PN) certificate, or AS in Nursing degree (ADN). Students can earn the ADN through the following: Traditional Pathway or LPN to ADN Transition Pathway. Admission to any of these programs requires approval from the Health Sciences Division. Completion of the Practical Nursing program requirements or the Associate Degree Nursing program requirements entitles the individual to be considered for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). A passing score on the NCLEX examination results in licensure as either an LPN or RN, depending on exam type. By law, a state nursing board may deny licensure for a variety of reasons that include conviction of a felony or crime involving moral turpitude, if the nature of the offense bears directly on the ability of the person to practice nursing. The nursing program is comprised of both lecture and clinical/lab courses. Students must complete both the lecture and the accompanying clinical/lab course successfully in order to progress to the next level of courses. The full-time student can complete the PN certificate in 14 months. Full-time students can complete the AS in nursing degree in five semesters. The LPN to ADN Transition pathway can be completed in three semesters of full-time study (see course sequence pages). Students attending full time are able to complete their general education requirements concurrently with their nursing courses. Part-time students may choose to extend their completion time, by taking fewer nursing or general education classes each semester. The first year of the PN and AS in nursing programs is offered at the La Plata, Prince Frederick, and Leonardtown campuses. The third and fourth clinical semesters of the AS in nursing program, the LPN to ADN Transition pathway, and the clinical summer semester of the PN program are typically offered at the La Plata Campus. Clinical experiences are scheduled at a variety of facilities in the Southern Maryland counties as well as in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to all classes and clinical experiences. For information, contact the Health Sciences Division: Health Sciences Division College of Southern Maryland 8730 Mitchell Road P.O. Box 910 La Plata, MD 20646-0910 Visit our web site at www.csmd.edu/hea. 10 3

GENERAL INFORMATION Live lecture and laboratory class hours are offered during the daytime hours. Clinical experiences are offered at a variety of times based on agency availability. The part-time student can choose to take only one nursing course a semester, and can limit clinical time to one day a week in the upper level courses, if desired. For every credit hour of lecture time, there are 15 contact hours per semester. For every credit hour of lab time, there are 30 contact hours per semester. For every credit hour of clinical time, there are 45 clinical hours per semester. Students must be committed to their schedules and understand the demands of the course of study in order to successfully complete the program they select. The need to carefully budget time among studies, family responsibilities, and work commitments is critical. The current college catalog provides information regarding tuition and fees for the nursing program. Additional expenses will be incurred to purchase uniforms, shoes, supplies, books, lab supplies, and other program necessities. Financial assistance is available through state and local scholarships, the college work-study program, basic Pell grants, and guaranteed student loans. It is important to apply early, as available money is allotted quickly. For more information on these programs, applicants should contact the Financial Assistance Department. Additional scholarships can be found on the Financial Assistance home page at http://www.csmd.edu/costs-aid/credit-costs-aid/scholarships-financial-aid/index.html. The Nursing Programs Outreach Advisor is available for consultation about academic, financial, or other personal needs related to nursing program success. Students are encouraged to contact the Student Success Center to schedule an appointment. APPLICATION PROCEDURE The steps in the application procedure are as follows: 1.
