YOUR FUNDRAISING WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE SAILORS SOCIETY CRISIS RESPONSE NETWORK Our Crisis Response Network offers counselling and help to seafarers. One of the pioneering projects your donations will help fund is our Crisis Response Network - a 24-hour, rapid response service providing frontline care to traumatised seafarers after piracy attacks, natural disasters and other crises at sea. Chaplains in our current networks, in Durban and the Ukraine, work alongside other charities - such as the Christian Seaman s Organisation and The Mission to Seafarers - offering trauma counselling and welfare to grief-stricken crews. For example, we helped the 11 crew members of the MT Maro, who were jailed for two years in Nigeria when the ship s engine failed and drifted into Nigerian waters. We were given access to the crew in prison and gave them counselling and practical support. Sailors Society passed news to their families who had heard nothing since the crew disappeared, and helped them with educational costs that were mounting in the absence of the main breadwinners. The men were eventually released in July 2016. Sailors Society rebuilding project in the Philippines
We currently have 22 port chaplains and two assistant chaplains trained to respond in a crisis, helping reduce seafarers trauma and equipping them to better deal with potentially devastating incidents. But more of these networks are desperately needed. With your help, we are opening two new networks in the Americas and the Philippines, creating a global network of support. For US$90,000, we can run the new centre in the Philippines for three years. These networks will be an extension of the wider work our chaplains and ship visitors do every day to transform the lives of the world s 1.6 million seafarers and their families, regardless of their background or faith. We offer help and hope in 87 ports and 26 countries around the world; your fundraising will expand our reach and provide comfort to those who need it most. This is one of the much needed projects your fundraising will help to support and develop.
