Given in memory of Lt. One thousand dollars is awarded to each of several physics majors in the following three categories: Scholarship given to the student with either the highest GPA in physics courses or, if a tie, the highest overall GPA. Research given to the student with the most outstanding senior thesis. Service given to the student with the most outstanding service to the Department, Institute, or community. Greytak) won the 2002 03 North American Debating Championships,and finished 1st place in the cumulative Speaker of the Year Rankings for the same organization. Alex Wissner-Gross (SB 03 Physics/Electrical Engineering/Mathematics. Advisors: Bolek Wyslouch, Alexander van Oudenaarden) was named a Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Fellow and offered a British Marshall Scholarship. He also received the Henry Ford II Scholar Award from the MIT School of Engineering.The award is given annually to a senior engineering student who has maintained a perfect cumulative average and considered to possess exceptional potential for leadership in the profession of engineering and in society. Terri M. ( ) GRADUATE 2003 Barrett Prize For Excellence in Astrophysics Stefan Ballmer Theoretical Astrophysics Thesis advisor: Erik Katsavounidis The award, established by students, friends, relatives, and colleagues of the late Professor Alan Barrett, honors his outstanding influence in the education of physicists and his fundamental contributions to the science and technology of astrophysics. A $1,000 prize is awarded annually to a senior undergraduate or graduate in Astrophysics. 2003 Buechner Teaching Prize Brice C. Smith Biophysics Thesis advisor: George Benedek Awarded to a student for outstanding contributions to the educational program of the Department of Physics.The prize was established in 1987 by Mrs. Christina Buechner in memory of her husband, Professor William Buechner, who served as chairman of the Physics Department from 1962 67.The prize includes a certificate and a cash award of $1,000. 2003 Martin Deutsch Student Award For Excellence in Experimental Physics Aaron E. 2003 Sergio Vazquez Prize Qudsia Jabeen Ejaz String Theory Thesis advisor: Barton Zwiebach Awarded to a graduate student in the MIT Department of Physics, with preference given to students from an under-represented sector of the population who may have had to overcome racial, physical, or financial barriers.the award was established in memory of Sergio Vazquez, a graduate student in the MIT Center for Theoretical Physics, who was killed in an automobile accident in April 1990.The award currently carries a prize of $1,000. Stewart Jr. award for contributions by an individual student or student organization to extracurricular activities and events during the preceding year. Jeff Bowers (Center for Theoretical Physics.Thesis advisor: Krishna Rajagopal) was one of two recipients of the Institute s 2003 Goodwin Medal for conspicuously effective teaching by a graduate student. David Chan (Condensed Matter Theory.Thesis advisor: John D. Joannopoulos) was awarded a Croucher Scholarship,funded by the Croucher Foundation, a Hong Kong-based charitable institution.this award includes full tuition and stipend for a three year period. Jessie Shelton (Center for Theoretical Physics.Thesis advisor: Washington Taylor IV) was one of 25 American graduate students nationwide selected by the U. S. Department of Energy s Office of Science to attend the 53rd Annual Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany, this summer.
