Contents Student Professional Awareness Experience (SPA X) ECECon Women in Engineering (WIE) Program Officer Training General Meetings and Member Networking Community Outreach IEEE Hardware Team You and Virginia Tech IEEE Sponsorship Tiers SPONSORSHIP FORM DEAR PROSPECTIVE CORPORATE PARTNER, Hello from Virginia Tech s Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch. We would like to thank you for taking the time out of your day to see how your corporation can impact our organization. Your support allows for Virginia Tech IEEE to provide the resources our engineering students need so that we can foster excellence, innovation, and growth at Virginia Tech. OPERATING HIGHLIGHTS During the school year, we actively work to cultivate our members interpersonal skills through professional development meetings and information sessions with corporate representatives. Students are also invited to our annual Student Professional Awareness Conference (S PAC) to further sharpen their professional skill set. Additionally, this is our second year organizing a Women in Engineering program with the hopes of continuing to develop a strong and diverse community of Virginia Tech IEEE members. Virginia Tech IEEE is strongly dedicated to the technical development of students through hands on experience. We support several teams across campus: Bradley Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) Integrated Design Studio Projects, Project Ellie High Altitude Balloon Design Team, Microwaves Moon Bounce, Autonomous Mastery Prototyping Lab (AMP) Lab, IEEE Hardware Team, and IEEE Robotics Team. Through these teams and organizations we encourage students from various backgrounds to participate in the ECE Department s design projects with real world applications. For the students who are dipping their toes int the wonders of engineering for the first time, we host Arduino programming seminars, which is a beginner s programming workshop for all Virginia Tech students that teaches them the basics to programming Arduino boards. Page 2

Looking Ahead With over 200 student members, Virginia Tech IEEE has been growing annually. Our ambitions require financial support, and without the generous donations from companies such as yours, we would not have accomplished so much since our chapter s founding. Please keep in mind that your donation is tax deductible. By supporting IEEE, you are not only fostering the growth of young engineers, but also advertising your company to future well rounded employees. You will be gaining access to one of the world s richest pools of young engineering professionals. Thank you again for your time and generosity. Student Professional Awareness Experience (S PAX) Virginia Tech IEEE s SPA X is based on six themes which include the following: working and career growth, professional ethics and social responsibilities, self management, engineers, public policy, and the importance of professional society to the individual. Students have the opportunity to attend skill building workshops throughout the day, meet industry representatives, listen to high profile speakers, and more. Each year we hope that the SPA X is different from the year before so that students can benefit in different ways and in the different themes. This coming year, we hope to take on several different SPA X events. In the fall before the career fair we are going to hold a headshot and resume workshop so students will have the ability to update their LinkedIn with a professional photo and make sure their resume is in its best shape. In the spring we are going to focus on professional development and possibly interview tips and tricks. Our goal is to benefit the students and your company in hopes that we could give you possible employees and they could gain an internship or career opportunity. Projected Spa X expenses Venue Reservation $1,000 Advertising & Brochures $300 Catered Lunch $1,500 Additional Expenses $700 Total Yearly Costs ~$3,500 Page 4

Women in Engineering (WIE) Program Virginia Tech s Women in Engineering program is comprised of a series of events focused around promoting female engineers in the workforce. Dinner receptions and networking events are held once per semester. Virginia tech IEEE invites guest speakers, varying from women educated in the fields of gender studies to industry professionals, to share their invaluable experiences with the audience. Virginia Tech IEEE aims to promote women in electrical and electronics fields while advocating IEEE leadership roles and advancing careers. IEEE WIE INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (ILC) This past year, Virginia Tech WIE members attended the annual IEEE WIE ILC in San Jose, California. This is a conference where attendees learn from four different tracks, which include: Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Engagement, and Executive Leadership. Members also have the opportunity to meet and network with high profile company CEO s, CTO s, and various executives from tech giants. Women in Engineering conferences reinforce the importance of IEEE and having members attend these events will bring in new and exciting ideas to strengthen the program and organization as a whole. With additional financial support, we hope to facilitate the development of programs and activities that promote the growth and retention of Women in Engineering. Projected WIE expenses Venue Reservation $700 Advertising & Brochures $100 Catered Lunch/Dinner $1,000 Additional Expenses $200 IEEE WIE ILC $2,000 Total Yearly Costs ~$4,000 Page 5

Officer Training Virginia Tech IEEE annually plans a retreat for the purpose of leadership development and new officer training. The training is hosted a few weeks into the semester to ensure a smooth transition to the new leadership for the organization. The training consists of team building exercises, bonding mixers, and officer meetings to discuss plans for the coming school year. Officer training and communication is vital for maintaining the retention of well rounded engineers and leaders from Virginia Tech. Projected Officer Training expenses Annual Networking Banquet $1,000 Officer Retreat & Training $1,500 Officer Transition Program $500 ECE Department Joint Events $1,000 Total Yearly Costs ~$4,000 Page 6

General Meetings and Member Networking General Meetings are held once a month during the school year (8 meetings/year) to provide our members with organization updates regarding upcoming projects and events. The goal of hosting General Meetings is to create an environment in which students can interact and socialize with one another in a relaxed setting, allowing them to share feedback or make suggestions regarding the section s projects and activities. It also serves as a platform for the IEEE officers and project leads to share information with students about upcoming opportunities and events. Member events are held to help in improving our members interpersonal skills. Through time spent making new friends at cookouts to sharing experiences on intramural teams, we believe this will help improve our members soft skills. Sponsors are welcome to speak at our general meetings for networking opportunities, professional interactions, or other purposes. Projected General Meeting Expenses Food $2,000 Advertising $50 Total Yearly Costs ~$2,050 Page 7

Community Outreach KIDS TECH UNIVERSITY (KTU) The primary goal of Kids Tech University is to create the future workforce in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by sparking children s interest in these fields. KTU s curriculum features three parts. Virginia Tech IEEE holds an interactive session once a month from July to April, in a lecture hall on campus centered on answering a why question. Then, the students participate in a career fair fashion Hands On Activity session where kids and parents walk around to various activities relating to STEM fields. SOLAR PINEWOOD DERBY RACE FOR BOY SCOUTS AND BROWNIES This is the second year that Virginia Tech IEEE is partnering with the local Blacksburg Boy Scout and Brownie Troops to innovate the Pinewood Derby Race. Our chapter s goals are to expose children to the STEM fields and alternative energy by hosting a daylong event, similar to the Pinewood Derby, but instead, the race will be on a flat surface with small cars powered by solar panels. Virginia Tech IEEE will teach and supply the troops with a part kit to create the solar powered derby race cars and educate the troop leaders on how to build the cars. The children will still have the freedom to be creative while innovating a competition that has been around for half of a century. Projected Outreach Expenses Teaching Tools $500 Solar Panel Car Parts $2,000 Advertising $50 Event Planning $500 Total Yearly Costs ~$3,050 Page 8

IEEE Hardware Team IEEE hosts a Hardware Challenge every year testing students in a multidisciplinary challenge. Mechanical, electrical, and software problems are presented to students in a format that requires them to build a 1 x1 x1 autonomous and self powered robot to complete a number of challenges within a given time limit. In the 2014 2015 school year, the robot was designated to play Simon Says for 15 seconds, use an Etch E Sketch toy to recreate the IEEE logo, solve a Rubik s Cube, pick up a single playing card, and follow a line throughout completing each task. The robot was constructed using originality and creativity to display a high level of engineering skills. Each challenge, indicated using a white square around each toy area, will be accomplished as quickly as possible to aid in achieving full points on each challenge. Due to confusion and bad scheduling, we were not able to compete in the Hardware Competition last year. However, this year we are going to compete in next spring s hardware challenge at the IEEE Southeast Conference. In lieu of competing last year, we were able to host a hardware workshop for students. In this workshop we focused on wearable technology and programming arduinos so that with our conducting threads and leds, the robots would come to life. Page 9
