Since the household ownership of PCs has increased significantly around the globe, and internet has become extremely popular nowadays, the boundary in the reality world has already been crossed. Can we foresee that in the next decade, what kind of better living that digital technology will lead us to? The key is to create a life without walls, to remove walls that keep us away from going digital. Remove the barrier that holds people back from learning digital, so that people can enjoy the fun brought from digital technology. Remove the digital learning barrier because of age or gender, so that everybody can connect with the world easily. Remove the language and cultural barrier, so that people in different races can communicate freely. Remove the barrier between countries and regions, so that innovative products can be introduced across the globe. Let the earth and human being co-exist without difficulties, so that the natural resources will never be used up. Let us integrate aesthetics and functionality, so that the ultimate needs of people can be fulfilled. Microsoft has been expecting to remove the Digital Divide by working side by side with Taiwanese manufacturers to make all of the creativities compatible and expandable through Windows Platform. In a life without walls, the communication and development between people will no longer be constrained by external conditions. Therefore, starting from this year, a new hardware engineering award WinHEC Award has been designed specifically for the hardware industry in Taiwan. Taiwan has been well-known for its efficient hardware R&D capability. It is hence an important partner to Microsoft. The WinHEC Award, designed to inspire innovations, comprises of five award categories: Green, Media & Entertainment, Internet, Innovation, and Industrial Design. The top contestants will not only receive high prize, but also win the recognition of the world through the abundant media exposures and joint marketing activities provided by Microsoft. Prizes & Judging Contest Categories and Awards There are five categories of Excellent Product Awards, and two categories of Special Awards. Excellent Product Awards Green Media & Entertainment Internet Innovation Industrial Design Special Awards Judge s Choice Consumer s Selection Judging Process Judging the WinHEC Award takes two rounds. In the first round, the qualified products will be chosen to enter into the second round, or the so-called final round. In the final round, two winning products will be chosen from each of the five contest categories as finalists. Each finalist will receive USD 2,000 and a trophy as rewards. From the finalists, judges will choose a final winner as the Judge s Choice Award 2008. The winner will receive another USD 5,000 and a trophy as rewards. In addition, a Consumer s Selection Award will be given to the product won the highest public votes from the Internet. The winner will receive another USD 1,000 and a trophy as rewards. Joint Marketing Plan Awarded winners of WinHEC Award will be authorized to use WinHEC Award logo. Winners shall follow the Participant Enrollment Agreement and participate in related promotional and joint promotional activities. Microsoft Taiwan will host the activities and at sole discretion to determine any related details of the activities. Joint promotional activities may include: Winning products will be displayed in the showcase at the Microsoft Innovation Center in Taipei. Winning products will also be displayed in the showcase at WinHEC 2008 Taipei events. A Microsoft executive will also hold an award ceremony and introduce the award-winning products during their keynote speech. The award-winning products and companies will be introduced in the WinHEC 08 Taipei brochure and newsletter. Winning products will be displayed on Microsoft s WinHEC Award website and receive global exposure: http://www.microsoft.com/taiwan/winhec/award Winning companies will be able to share their success stories with such notable members of mass media. 5
Registration Entrance Qualifications All the products have to be Windows compatible, which means that the computers and mobile device are running Windows, and the hardware has to be windows compatible. All Taiwan registered companies are welcome to register for the contest, including unions, foundations, institutions, or MoE accredited colleges and universities, studios, or innovation incubation centers Either launched products or un-launched products on marketplaces are accepted for entry. Both launched products and un-launched products should meet requirements of the R.O.C. product safety certificate that ensures product safety, description, import or export, and examination for public display purpose. If any of the above mentioned is infringed upon, contestants will be disqualified. Required Applications Entrants make their own decision on whether to register one product for one or more than one reward types, based on the product nature. Entrants make their own decision on whether to register a set of product series as one product entry or to separate into individual products. Entrants bear the costs of delivering the registered products to the Finalist event venue as well as the costs of sending them back to where they shall be stored after the campaign ends. Judging Judging Procedure Registration Registration Form / Required Documentations Entrance Qualification Eligibility will be verified by the submitted profiles and materials. First Round Judging Qualified final entrants will be chosen at this sage. Total number of Finalists will be further decided based on the actual number of qualified products. Final Round Judging Entrants will be requested to deliver a 5-minute presentation or product demo, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session. If the documents or materials are not sufficient and entrants cannot re-summit in time, they may lose their eligibility and not be able to compete in the contest. Only entrants that meet the requirements will be accepted. Entrants that cannot submit the required documents and materials on time will be rejected. First Round Judging Judges will review submitted documents and score ranging from one to ten, ten being the highest. Qualified products will be ranked in each award category accordingly. Products with the same score will be re-scored by judges. Final nominated product of each category will be determined by the board of judges. 9
Final Round Judging Project office will notify qualified entrants to deliver products to the designated location for final review during the appointed hours on the final round judging day of Nov, 29. Qualified entrants will be requested to deliver a 5-minute presentation or including product demo, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session. If a pre-set up is needed for product demo, project office will notify entrants separately on the time slot available for related preparation work. Towards the end of presentation for each award category, judges will score the products individually. A joint discussion will then be held among the judges for a second round scoring. Two winning products will be chosen from each of the five contest categories as finalists. Products with the same score will be re-scored by judges. Judge s Choice The winner of the Judge s Choice Award will be chosen from the finalists of Excellent Product Awards. Consumer s Selection The winner of Consumer s Selection Award will be the finalists of Excellent Awards that receives the highest public votes from the internet. Reduction and elimination of environmentally sensitive materials 3. Devoted to the energy consumption (ie. by using Windows power saving features) 4. Easy of recycling Highlighting the power of the Windows platform for compelling media and entertainment experiences Showcasing the benefits of a connected Windows world, anytime and anywhere to enjoy Internet Innovation that distinguishes the value of Windows in today s digital lifestyle Demonstrates design and design analogy, combining creative appeal with functionality by connecting to Windows Entrant agrees that the conclusion made by the judges is the final. Entrant will pay such result with all respects and not file any objection against it. 10
Terms & Conditions Any information provided must be true and accurate. The material, information and products provided can not infringe any third party s trademark, patent, copyright, any other intellectual property rights and/or proprietary rights. The Participate Enrollment Agreement is considered as the part of this registration forms. Should not the Participant Enrollment Agreement be signed and submitted to the organizer, the registration would be considered incomplete. Microsoft reserves the right to change the rules and conditions of this event. Microsoft reserves the right to decide the entrance eligibility of the entrants. Entrants must not make or engage in any false or deceptive record or communication of any kind on the entry. Any entry found breaching violating terms and conditions will be rejected. 11
