SPIE Student Chapter Annual Report 2016 Chapter presentation and main activities Student Chapter was created in February 2009 and it gathers PhD and Master Students from Micro-Nano Sciences & Systems, Optics and Applied Mechanics departments in Institute, located in Besançon, France. The main missions of the chapter are: organize networking events for students conferences, seminars, workshops, visits promote science among general public by organizing outreach programs A large number of events were organized in 2016 to fulfill our mission, including: Monthly seminars for non-permanent staff members: Workshops for PhD and Master students: COMSOL, Android Stand with experimental setups during science festivals: Time Fest and Science Fest Photonics Day 2016 international conference Members List for 2016 / 2017 First Name Last Name Institution Email Address Vahan Malkhasyan vahan.malkhasyan@femto-st.fr Ismail Ouadghiri Idrissi ismail.ouadghiri@gmail.com Stefania Rémi Oliveri Meyer stefania.oliveri@femto-st.fr remi.meyer@femto-st.fr Louis Séverine Andreoli Denis landreol@femto-st.fr severine.denis@femto-st.fr Tatiana Kovalevich tnkovalevich@gmail.com Tintu Xavier Kuriakose Romain tintukuriakoset@gmail.com xavier.romain@femto-st.fr Xiaolong Yannick Xu Lefier xiaolong.xu@femto-st.fr yannick.lefier@gmail.com Sameh Obeid sameh.obeid@femto-st.fr Hasnaa Meliani adrien.godet@femto-st.fr Florent Behague florent.behague@femto-st.fr Venancio Calero venancio.calero@femto-st.fr Solveig Perret olveig.perret@femto-st.fr Deroh Koffi Moïse Kouame moise.deroh@femto-st.fr Adrien Godet adrien.godet@femto-st.fr Amar Nath Ghosh amarnath.ghosh@femto-st.fr Eduardo Alvear Ext. member - Nipun Sharma Ext. member - Artur Movsesyan Ext. member - 2

SPIE Student Chapter Annual Report 2016 Activities for 2016 Monthly seminars for non-permanents staff members Student chapter organized series of seminars for PhD / Post-Doc students or visiting researchers, to give them opportunity to present their work in front of an audience (20 30 attendees) from different departments located in Besancon. This activity helps them to improve their presenting skills and for some of them to overcome language barrier before attending international conferences abroad. The presentations were followed by questions from the audience and more deep discussions were carried-out on the topic of the seminar during the lunch, which was offered by the chapter. In November 2016, a seminar was organized for non-permanents staff members in Belfort (there are 2 departments of located 100km away from Besançon). During the seminar, activities of the student chapter were introduced and possibilities of involving students from Belfort into the chapter were discussed. After that, 2 PhD students from Energy department presented their work in front of a large audience. For these seminars, to organize lunch breaks funds of the Student Chapter and support from administrative direction were used. COMSOL workshop During the workshop, basics of the software were introduced, as well as difficulties and limitations related to COMSOL were discussed. Overall, 30 students attended the workshop, split into two days, 6 hours each day. Lunch break was provided for the attendees of the workshop. SPIE funds were used for that purpose. In April 2016, a workshop was organized to introduce COMSOL Multiphysics software for Master and PhD students, who were new to it and were interested to learn. It is general-purpose software platform, based on advanced numerical methods, for modeling and simulating physics-based problems. 3

SPIE Student Chapter Annual Report 2016 The Time Fest (Les 24 heures du Temps) Being former capital of French watchmakers, every year city of Besancon is organizing the event called "Les 24 heures du temps", which highlights technological achievements of the Franche-Comté region and pays tribute to the patrimony of watch industry. Science Fest (Fête de la science) The event was created 24 years ago, and took a considerable scale over the years with thousands of scientists involved, animations throughout France and an increasingly diverse audience. During the Science Fest researchers, teachers, student associations, like us share their enthusiasm for science and technology with young and old through experiments, conferences and shows. In June 2016, for the third year in a row, our chapter attended the event, by presenting a big stand with experimental setups. On the installations we explained what could link balloons, liquid nitrogen and micro-atomic clocks, etc. Overall, the event attracted around 22.000 visitors, most of them stopped by our stand. Our chapter attended the event by presenting experimental setups such as the formation of a super-continuum in a non-linear fiber and holograms from the museum. 4

SPIE Student Chapter Annual Report 2016 Photonics Day 2016 Photonics Day is and annual regional conference in collaboration with the ICB Dijon (Le Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Carnot de Bourgogne) that brings together several scientific themes (Optics and Photonics, Microsystems, Micromechanics). The conference is hosted and organized alternatively between Dijon and Besançon. This year the Student Chapter organized the Photonics day. The 2016 edition of Photonics Day (December 8) enlarged the geography of attendees to international scale. There were participants coming from Dijon (France), Lausanne (Switzerland), Tallinn (Estonia), Rochester (USA). Overall, more than 50 people have attended the conference, including (for detailed program see annex 1): o 3 invited speakers presentations o 6 student presentations o 20 posters presentations o exhibition with invited optical manufacturing company Optosigma-Europe was invited to attend Photonics Day 2016. They gave oral presentation about scientific achievements on frameless and flat mirrors and also, presented their products during coffee and lunch break with a small stand. This was a good opportunity for students and researcher of to exchange with representatives of that company and establish contact for future eventual collaborations. Optosigma-Europe offered Best poster award for one student at the end of the conference. To cover the expenses of the event, funds of the Student Chapter were used, as well as support from administrative direction, Doctoral School of the University of Franche-Comté, Interreg (Franco-Suisse) project. 5
