Opioids, Addiction and New Frontiers in Pain Management Exploratory Convention for the Virginia Pain Society February 2-4, 2018 Boar s Head Resort 200 Ednam Drive Charlottesville, VA The Virginia Pain Society Logo: The center of the Logo contains the seal of Virginia with the Commonwealth moto Sic Semper Tyrannis (thus always to tyrants). Or in clear English, Death to tyrants. In our current state of pain and pain treatment in Virginia this is a very vivid and applicable image. Pain is a tyrant that robs youth, steals productivity and cripples souls. It affects our families, communities and businesses. The treatment of pain can be restorative or in some cases utterly destructive. We physicians with the spear in our hands must use it wisely. We must remember primum non nocere (first do no harm). We must also guard against institutionalizing human suffering. It is not a task that is easy but worthy endeavors are not. We need your knowledge, support and energy to help us bring real solutions to Virginia.
DEAR COLLEAGUES It is with great excitement that we welcome you to our exploratory convention and scientific session: The central mission of the Virginia Pain Society will be to provide pain solutions to Virginians. We will work to provide solutions across all stakeholders in Virginia: patients, hospitals, communities, community organizations, and governmental organizations from the local to state level. We will combine the expertise from leading pain physicians in the State with advocacy groups and other pain medicine experts from across the nation. This year s meeting is the first step in realizing that goal. As part of the meeting we will have a scientific session that is open to all providers who treat patients with pain. We believe that only together can we make a positive difference for the population of this state that we love. We hope to see you at the conference and look forward to making substantive contributions to the treatment of pain in Virginia. Expected Attendance The Virginia Pain Society Exploratory meeting brings clinicians, scientists and industry partners from all over the state of Virginia. We anticipate in excess of 200 clinical providers to attend including: physicians, mid -level practitioners nurses, pharmacists and healthcare administrators. Virginia Board of Medicine Info Regarding Prescription Authority The 2016 General Assembly passed a law that requires the Board of Medicine to identify prescribers that should complete 2 hours of continuing education each biennium on topics related to pain management, the responsible prescribing of controlled substances, and the diagnosis and management of addiction. The Board decided for the first biennium, it would require all licensees of the Board of Medicine with prescriptive authority to obtain the two hours of continuing education. The hours are to be Type 1.
