I hope your St. Patrick s Day was a fun time. I also find myself hoping you failed to get your NCAA basketball tournament bracket submitted on time... based on the first day of action, I find myself wishing I d missed the deadline, as my bracket has taken some significant hits. Hope your favorite teams are winning, though. They call it March Madness. As Rotary leaders in Zones 30 and 31, I think we have our own version of March Madness, when the calendars are full with the transitions of leadership that maintain Rotary as an engaged force for good in our local communities and in our world. All of our 26 Districts have completed or will complete their PETS events in March, and it s an important time for our organization. I know my travels have been significant recently, and I thank each of you for your hospitality and energy as we ve been together. I congratulate each of our incoming Governors for 2015-16, who are encouraging their incoming Presidents and Club Leaders to Be A Gift to The World. After today, there are 102 days until July 1, 2015, so the time is moving fast toward a new Rotary year, new Rotary themes, new Rotary leadership... and a new Rotary Director in Karen Wentz. I mentioned to you in January that Director-elect Karen and I are working hard to ensure the transitions of leadership keep the GPS momentum of Zones 30 and 31 in motion. Like you, I was excited this past week to receive more information about the fall 2015 Baton Rouge Institute. Yes, we continue to experience the constant motion of change.
2 Director s Letter (continued) I want to take this opportunity to encourage our current District Governors during March Madness. It is a personal joy to be serving alongside you this year, and I continue to appreciate how so many of you email me with the updates and the happenings in your Districts. We have three more months to leave our mark... we, too, have 102 days until July 1, 2015. Allow me to tell you how satisfying it is to see our collective leadership progress, and our growing momentum, for Growing, Partnering and Serving. GROWING - Through our team efforts, we have seen slight increases in our membership through February 28, one of our two Zones 30/31 goals. Have a look at the statistics in this issue, and compare how your District is doing compared to our other Districts. You ll see growth in 17 of our 26 Districts, and a net total of 315 additional Rotary members in our Districts today, as compared to July 1, 2014. Let s keep up the great work here. PARTNERING Through our team efforts, we maintain the pace to increase our support in Annual Programs Fund giving to The Rotary Foundation, one of our two Zones 30/31 goals. Doing so will, in turn, increase your District s DDF, and in turn will increase your ability to partner on projects around the world in our six areas of focus. Your review of the statistics in this issue will inform you that 14 of our 26 Districts are tracking with increases year over year. Collectively, we have experienced a 9.1% increase over last year s giving levels YTD, which slightly exceeds our target of a 6.5% increase needed to achieve $100 per capita across the two Zones. Let s don t wait for one of those famous NCAA basketball buzzer-beaters... let s keep up the steady and great work here. SERVING Through our team efforts, we are in the process of tangibly making a difference with our local food networks to show that ROTARY HAS HEART. You ll see a number of great examples in this month s GPS. Congratulations to each of the Rotary Clubs who took this opportunity to serve those with food insecurity, those who need our helping hand. Thank you to those Districts featured this month, who took the time to share your stories, photos and smiles. As we continue to experience the constant motion of change, I do want to remind you, however, of the consistent rhythm we need in each of our Rotary Clubs to share our gift, and bring in new members. This photo serves as this reminder. It was a privilege, during March Madness, to be a part of new member induction ceremonies in a number of clubs this month. It was a personal joy to hand a new Rotary pin to a new Rotary member. What are we waiting for? Not just in March, but in every month of the year, let s keep bringing in new members. 4 Meet Me In Sao Paulo! Dear Fellow Rotarians and Guests, We are excited about our Heart of America event in São Paulo during the International Convention. Sharing Rotary in another part of the Rotary world gives us a great way to celebrate our successes in this LIGHT UP ROTARY year! We hope you plan to Let Your Light Shine at our Heart of America Event Friday Night 5 June at 5:30-7:30 in São Paulo. 5 TRF Scholarship Water & Sanitation A letter from Abby McNear, Rotary Grants Manager The Rotary Foundation and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, which are working together to tackle the world s water and sanitation crisis, this year will award a limited number of scholarships for graduate students at UNESCO-IHE s Delft campus in the Netherlands. The partnership aims to increase the number of trained professionals who can devise, plan, and implement water and sanitation solutions in developing areas. The scholarships also are designed to promote long-term productive relationships between Rotarians and skilled water and sanitation professionals in their communities. Scholarship applications, for studies in 2015-17, can be submitted online. Please see the overview for more details. Additional information also is available in the application tool kit, the club/district application and scholarship terms and conditions. 6 New TRF District Grant Options Todd Lindley, The Rotary Foundation Coordinator for Zone 31, sent the following letter to TRF leaders in the Zone: In the summer of 2014, the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation made a change, allowing several new things to be funded by the District Grant (but not Global Grants). These include: RI Programs: RYLA, Youth Exchange, Rotaract, Interact (lineal descendants of Rotarians may not benefit from the use of grant funds) Construction (including low-cost shelters) Travel for staff of cooperating organizations Activities primarily implemented by an organization other than Rotary (not for operational expenses or salaries of the organization) Scholar/VTT orientation and grant management training seminars I have just returned from NAYEN 2015, a meeting of Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) networks from Mexico, USA and Canada. They requested that I speak on how to get Rotary Foundation funds to help them fund Rotary Youth Exchange, as now allowed by the Trustees. The 400-500 folks attending were very interested to learn about these new permissions, especially as it relates to Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE). You can fund specific RYE projects that your district does now, like sending all the inbound students to a weekend camp, or sending them to the annual winter SCRYE meeting (or Central States, etc.) No funds can be spent on Rotarians, spouses, employees of districts or clubs or for direct descendants of Rotarians (such as children, grandchildren). One use the Trustees are hopeful will be used a lot would be for a club or district to fund a full-year Rotary Youth Exchange for a student whose parents cannot afford it. A budget could be constructed to pay for the airfare, vaccinations, visa, passport and other expenses, and also for the money used during the exchange normally covered by the parents. Making the District Grant timetable work with the Rotary Youth Exchange timetable will take some work though, since the specific student must be named as well as their foreign host club at the time of application. Many attending NAYEN would doubtful this could be overcome, but I asked our Grants Coordinator Ken Waterbury and he explained very clearly how it might work. Most of us have seen how a full-year exchange can change a student. I have seen it first hand in my own daughter and in the dozen students I worked with as a Club RYE Officer in Illinois before moving to Missouri. We all have students in the schools within our districts who would blossom during if such an opportunity was available to them. The focus of their entire life might be changed.

And, the Rotary Club of Golden Meadow, LA is conducting a food drive during the months of February and March. Golden Meadow Upper Elementary will collect goods along with our Club. At Easter time, we will present the items collected to the Senior Citizens Center here in Golden Meadow. They will distribute the groceries to needy senior citizens in our area. Rotary Has Heart D6580 Twenty-five members from two Bloomington, IN Rotary Clubs and the local Rotaract Club volunteered Monday, February 9 th for the Rotary Has Heart community service event, with the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. The Food Bank serves hungry families in Monroe, Mar0n, Owen, Orange, Brown and Lawrence coun0es in South Central Indiana. The volunteers packed 320 boxes of food, and the clubs provided 147 pounds of food dona0ons for the Food Bank as part of the effort. The members agreed that volunteering together was great fun and for a great cause! Jim Heinzen reporting.
8 Rotary Has Heart D6190 A virtual food drive Instead of collecting cans, dollars or checks, Rotary Club members in District 6190, LA, made their contributions on line, and indicated their home club. Clubs contributions were then sent to the food bank in their area of the district. Three Food Banks shared a total of $11,714.93 in contributions. The Food Banks preferred this to actual cans of food, as they have a greater purchase power than the individual at the grocery store. RI Director Larry visited the District for a Rotary Foundation Banquet and joined Shreveport area Rotarians in packing 3500 pounds of food at the local Food Bank. District Governor Bob Holeman is pictured left. RI Director Larry is in the bright blue Rotary tee-shirt. Other Zone faces in the photo that you might recognize, are Past District Governor David Bellew and his wife Judy, and Past District Governor Bob Molloy. The District presented a food-can trophy to the club with the highest per-capita giving. The presentation occurred at the Rotary Foundation Dinner. Rotary Has Heart D6170 Recently, our Rotary Club of Benton -Bauxite, AR, held a peanut-butter-workday-fundraiser at our local Kroger store. We received jars of peanut butter donated by shoppers, and we received nearly $900 in cash donations. We used the cash to buy more peanut butter. Our 10:00 am to 5:00 pm volunteer collectors, banked a total of 1,041 jars of peanut butter. We delivered the 1041 jars to the Benton Middle School for their Backpack program, that feeds up to 70 families each week during the school year. Note: We donated 331 jars last Fall, so all together we have provided them with 1,372 jars. Michael Leo Hughes reporting.

AFRICA - It has been over 13 months since the last Polio case was reported in Ethiopia; over 8 months for Cameroon, over 7 months for Somalia, and over 7 months for Nigeria. If Nigeria can go 12 months with quality surveillance detecting no Wild Polio Virus, they will join the countries which have stopped Polio transmission. Sub-National Immunization Days were completed on March 14-18 using trivalent vaccine. National Immunization Days are planned in South Sudan from March 24-27. In Afghanistan, the bulk of cases are linked to cross-border transmission with neighboring Pakistan. A "ROTARY FLAME" was launched in December in Chennai, India to commemorate India becoming polio-free. The torch has made its way through several countries already, recently in Afghanistan. The torch will pass through all three endemic countries before arriving at the 2015 International Convention in Sao Paolo June 6-9. The Gates Foundation is currently matching all Rotarian Raised Polio Donations $2 for each $1 Contributed (Up to $35,000,000 per year). The Polio Eradication End Game Strategy is alive and well. Our Goal is Global Polio Eradication.
