This competition is open to all current post secondary school students in Ontario with an interest in construction related activities such as architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, interior design, construction management, innovative products, and manufacturing. 1.1.2 Entries can be submitted by individuals, or by teams consisting of up to 4 people. 1.2 Client 1.2.1 Your 'Client' is the CSC, and the chief organizing committee is comprised of the Grand Valley and Toronto Chapters. 1.3 Project Description and Scope 1.3.1 The design theme: The building design is to accommodate a Hospitality program. 1.3.2 Location: 48 Ontario Street North, Kitchener, Ontario. In Kitchener s growing downtown core. 1.3.3 Building history: The building was originally constructed for the Bell Telephone Co in 1923. Bell moved out in 1941. The Unemployment Insurance Commission was there from 1942 to 1944. The Unemployment and Selective Service Office followed from 1945 to 1946. After the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Legion had a branch in the building until 2001. The building was vacant following this, but staged blues concerts under the direction of Glenn Smith, hosting many noteworthy performers, and contributing to the cities blues music scene. 1.3.4 Owner and a new program for the space: 1.3.4.1 Voisin Capital was the successful bidder, purchasing the property from the City of Kitchener in 2017 based on the strength of their proposal. Visit www.48ontario.com for further information 1.3.4.2 The 15,000+ sq ft of existing space includes two floors and a basement level that may be expanded for hospitality related functions to suit its prime location in a high tech business cluster. Programming for the space may be inspired by a variety of heritage sources including its builder, Bell, a forerunner of collaboration and digital innovation through the legendary bell labs (https://networks.nokia.com/belllabs journals). A long tradition of service as a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and its identity as a cultural icon to a burgeoning blues community completes the placemaking vision: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugkblin8jz8 ).
