Minimum age of 18 years FAST FACTS Location Activities Accommodation Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Work in the local community Increase cultural awareness Promote social inclusion Volunteer hostel WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO? This project offers outreach programmes in the community to teach job-related skills, encourage cultural awareness and promote social inclusion. As a volunteer you will help to empower the impoverished of Rio de Janeiro through educational programs, which aim to connect residents with academic and employment opportunities. Essentially this teaching and transfer of valuable skills and knowledge allows locals and community partners to compete more effectively in the job market. This allows people to actively help themselves by expanding their economic horizons and helping them to make more informed, wiser and healthier decisions for themselves and their families. WHAT WILL I BE DOING? As a result of this project, favela residents are empowered to make a difference to their own lives as well as to goals for long-term community transformation. As a volunteer you will deliver unique perspectives and educational tools based on your own background knowledge and expertise. You may become involved in a number of outreach projects, outlined below: Music and dance initiatives Graffiti art Youth athletics Day-care center support After school programs School environmental/gardening programs Handicrafts for women and youth English classes (must have basic Portuguese) Computer and technology programs (must have basic Portuguese)
Tutoring services (must have basic Portuguese) Renovation and community building projects By joining this project you will gain valuable work experience, easily transferable to any future career and educational opportunities, whilst also making a valuable, positive and lasting contribution to the sustainability of one of Rio s largest favelas. You will have the opportunity to maintain and develop outreach programmes of your own, learning how to manage change at the grassroots level as a social entrepreneur. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE? You will need to make your own way to your accommodation, where you will be met by a friendly Frontier representative. You will receive detailed and easy-to-follow instructions prior to your departure. You will have time to relax that night before your project begins the following day with an orientation and visit to your volunteer project. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you with any questions and you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly, vibrant community. WHERE WILL I BE STAYING? For the duration of your project you will be staying in a local hostel where you will share a dorm room with your fellow volunteers. There will be hot showers and wireless internet access and cable TV are also available. There are comfortable and spacious communal areas to relax in the evenings and during your time off, and a fully equipped kitchen for preparing meals. WHAT WILL I BE EATING? Breakfast is included but you will need to provide your own lunch and dinner. This is a fun element of travelling away from home and a good opportunity to bond with fellow travellers. You may also wish to explore local restaurants and market stalls - the locals tend to eat late so head out for an evening meal after 9 pm if you want to avoid the tourists! You can use the kitchen in the hostel to prepare meals and buy food from local grocery stores located 15 minutes from your accommodation. About $80 per week should be sufficient for basic diets but make sure you take a bit extra for treats and luxuries!
