Explore the bustling city of Taipei and its vibrant art and museum scene, then venture out of the city to take in the beautiful coastline featuring ancient mining towns and distinctive geological rock formations. Finally, visit Tainan and view the city through the ages, exploring different temples and special city landmarks that represent various stages of time through the lens of architecture. ITINERARY Day 1 Friday, November 2 IN TRANSIT Depart from your gateway city to arrive in Taipei on Day 2. Day 2 Saturday, November 3 Arrive in Taipei and transfer to the five-star Regent Taipei, your home for the next four nights. The remainder of your day is free to explore or rest. Day 3 Sunday, November 4 This morning, visit the Lungshan Temple, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and Dihua Street as you get acquainted with this ancient city and its traditions. After lunch, visit the National Palace Museum, one of the finest Asian art museums in the world. Learn about the many treasures that came to Taiwan with Chiang Kai-shek from the Forbidden City in Beijing as you delve into the influence art has had on Taiwan s culture and history. Dinner tonight is at the world-famous Silks Palace Restaurant for a banquet where each dish is a work of art crafted to resemble the museum s imperial treasures. (B, L, D) Day 4 Monday, November 5 Take a short journey outside Taipei to explore the Northeast Coast of Taiwan. Start at Yehliu Geopark with its beautiful sandstone rock formations and coastal views. Then visit the mountain town of Jiufen, known for its narrow alleyways packed with teahouses and street-food snacks. This evening join Cal alumni living in Taiwan for a cocktail party, bridging distance with an all-encompassing love for alma mater. (B, L, R) Why Eureka? Day 5 Tuesday, November 6 After breakfast, embark on another day of touring, including visits to the Lin Family Garden, Taiwan s most complete surviving example of traditional Chinese garden architecture; Qingshui Temple; and the National Museum of History. Dine tonight at the Shi-Yang Culture Restaurant for a fusion of traditional Taiwanese cuisine with modern flair. (B, L, D) Day 6 Wednesday, November 7 /TAROKO Transfer to the Silks Place Taroko today. On the way, visit the Lanyang Museum, designed by a Cal alumnus to reflect the unique history, culture, and landscape in Lanyang. Then, stop at the breathtaking Qingshui Cliffs and view the coastal cliffs towering 800 meters above the Pacific Ocean. (B, L, D) Day 7 Thursday, November 8 TAROKO Explore Taroko National Park today, including visits to the Swallow Grotto, Eternal Spring Shine, and Shakadang Trails. After lunch, continue your discovery of Taiwan s natural beauty on the Baiyang Trail, a short, easy walk leading to a gorgeous view of Baiyang Waterfall in the Taroko Gorge. After enjoying the lush green views and fresh air of the park, head back to your hotel for dinner. (B, L, D) Day 8 Friday, November 9 TAROKO/TAINAN Head to Tainan today, the oldest area of Taiwan and a city with wonderful historic sites. Arrive via Taiwan High Speed Rail. Check in to the Silks Place Tainan and enjoy dinner at the hotel while you enjoy free time in this charming city. Day 9 Saturday, November 10 TAINAN/ Spend time exploring the old city of Tainan today with visits to the Chihkan Tower, Koxinga Shrine, and Confucius Temple. Lunch at A Xia, a renowned seafood restaurant. Continue your tour of Tainan at the Hayashi Department Store, an art-deco shopping area that opened in the 1930s and is close to the hearts of locals because of its sweeping staircases, geometrical windows, and viewing deck with Shinto shrine. Transfer back to Taipei this evening via Taiwan High Speed Rail. (B, L) ABOUT THE ACCOMMODATIONS During your travel you will stay at the Regent Taipei, Silks Place Taroko, and Silks Place Tainan. ABOUT THE PROFESSOR Vincent Resh has been a professor of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley since 1975. Professor Resh has taught at National Taiwan University and has served on evaluation committees for their international programs. For more than 20 years, he has been an adviser to the World Health Organization and other United Nations Organizations on human impacts on water resources in developing countries in Asia and Africa. He also serves on various science advisory boards on water issues in California. He received the University of California s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1995 and has taught about issues related to water and the environment to more than 20,000 Berkeley undergraduates. Cancellations made 105-61 days prior to departure will result in forfeiture of 30% of the trip cost per person. Cancellations made 60-31 days prior to departure will result in forfeiture of 50% of the trip cost per person. No refunds are granted within 30 days of tour departure or for no-show or early departure from a trip already in progress. CAA MEMBERSHIP POLICY: One traveler per room, whether an alumnus/a or friend, must be a current Cal Alumni Association member at the time of departure to participate in Cal Discoveries Travel offerings. Payment of $60 for seniors 65 years and over and $75 for others establishes a regular or affiliate membership with all other Association benefits. Memberships are for individuals only, and are nonrefundable and non-transferable. A traveling pair and their children under 21 years of age may travel on one membership. MOBILITY AND FITNESS TO TRAVEL: This is an active trip including a faster pace and extensive walking with substantial distances covered.
