BILL BUCKLEY ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP 2017 Information and Application Form As part of the Maintenance Engineering Society of New Zealand s objective To encourage New Zealand students into tertiary education in the field of engineering technology, a MESNZ Engineering Scholarship worth up to $5,000 is to be offered each year, for the specific purpose of covering tuition fees. This scholarship is available to assist students commencing study towards an IPENZ accredited engineering degree, diploma or certificate from any year level. Applications are sought from candidates interested in maintenance engineering as a career. Applicable Study: All Years: National Certificate New Zealand Diploma Degree Closing Date: 31 August 2016 Notification Date: Mid October 2016 Students with links to MESNZ through work or other avenues are urged to apply. The MESNZ engineering scholarships are open to applicants from anywhere in New Zealand. Selection Process: Applications are to be made to the MESNZ Executive Officer, PO Box 12 241, Thorndon, Wellington 6144. Short-listed candidates may be required to attend an interview. Travel costs will be covered by MESNZ. The scholarships are awarded by the MESNZ executive on the recommendation of a Selection Committee. Value of Award: Up to $5,000 For: Assistance with tuition fees Note: NZ citizens or permanent residents only Regulations: 1. The scholarship shall be known as the Bill Buckley Engineering Scholarship, named after the Society s patron. 2. The Scholarship shall be offered annually to students who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents and who intend to enrol to study towards an IPENZ accredited engineering degree / diploma / trades qualification. The scholarship covers a grant of up to $5,000 towards the payment of tuition fees. More than one scholarship may be awarded each year to a total of $5,000. Payment is made on submission of copy of a paid GST invoice from the training institute that the winning applicant will be studying at. 4. Applicants shall be selected from any entrant year levels on the basis of interest in maintenance engineering as a career, motivation to succeed, and academic merit. 5. The scholarships shall be awarded by the MESNZ executive upon the recommendation of a Selection Committee. Short-listed applicants may be required to attend an interview. THE BILL BUCKLEY ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP CHECK LIST and APPLICATION FORM Please enclose all of the following nine items, plus the completed checklist: 1. The completed scholarship application forms (pages 2 to 6 of this document) 2. A brief Curriculum Vitae (maximum of five pages) detailing your scholastic record, your work history (if any), also details of your hobbies and any sporting activities you participate in, plus details of any community involvement or volunteer work you are involved with. This cannot be your School Record of Achievement, but rather a document created by you. 3. A 500 word typed essay on Why I want to be a maintenance engineer. Please note the criteria for the essay: it must be at least 500 words and preferably no more than 650, single spaced, typed in 11 pitch Arial, which should make it no more than two pages (do not include any graphics or photos in your essay). You need to type in the word count at the end of your essay and ALSO email the essay separately (in MS Word or rtf format not pdf) to MESNZ@IPENZ.org.nz 4. Evidence of involvement of a completed maintenance project either directly or indirectly involved in. A brief description, drawings, and photographs 5. An original reference from the Principal or Associate/Assistant/Deputy Principal of your secondary school / college / training institute or from your current Employer. They need to comment on your interest in studying engineering, motivation to succeed and academic merit. 6. A Character Referee which is not to be completed by a close relative. It would be preferable, but not essential, that the referee be a member of MESNZ. They need to comment on your interest in studying engineering, motivation to succeed and academic merit. 7. You need to read the Conditions of Application on Page 6 and, if you are in agreement, sign and enclose the declaration form page with your application. 8. Head and shoulders photo to be used for publicity purposes. Please supply on a CD as a 1MB jpeg or tif file or as a photograph (please write your name on the back) 9. A copy of your most recent NCEA (or Cambridge) results (including year end results for the previous year if you have them). The above nine items (plus the check list) are to be returned by Wednesday 31 August 2016 to: MESNZ Executive Officer, PO Box 12241, Thorndon, Wellington 6144. (If your references are being sent under separate cover, please double-check to ensure that they have in fact been sent and note on your check list that they are being submitted separately.) Please note that as a condition of entry, should you be judged a winner, prior to any funds being paid out, a copy of your confirmation of enrolment at your chosen tertiary institution, needs to be forwarded to MESNZ (scan to pdf and email is probably best send to MESNZ@IPENZ.org.nz ), but it can be posted to the original application address. 7. Bill Buckley Engineering Scholarship Conditions of Application a. The information requested in the application form will be used for assessment purposes. All personal information collected during the application process may be made available to members of the selection panel for the particular award. b. MESNZ undertakes to store all applications in a secure place and to disclose the information requested in the application form only to those persons involved in the selection of candidates. c. MESNZ will normally hold documents about successful applicants for the period of the award. Documents for unsuccessful applicants will normally be kept for six weeks after the award has been made and then destroyed. Unsuccessful candidates may request that their materials, other than information supplied by a third party (see e below), be returned to them, rather than be destroyed. The request must be made within one month of the announcement of the award. d. Consistent with the provisions of the Privacy Act applicants have the right of access to information held about them. Applicants also have the right to request the correction of information held about them. e. Information about an applicant from other parties, e.g. a personal reference, which is supplied by a referee or other person on a confidential basis, will not be made available to the applicant. f. In order to honour successful applicants, MESNZ will disclose limited information (typically the award, your name, field of study, and a brief background) about successful applicants to IPENZ and the media. If your application is successful, by signing this form you have authorised MESNZ to release limited details to the parties mentioned above as well as placing you on the MESNZ website as a scholarship winner. If for any reason, information about you cannot be released as indicated, you must complete the portion of the declaration (see Declaration below) provided for this. In some cases a candidate may be ineligible for an award if the personal information required cannot be made available. g. Applicants must have read the Conditions of Application for the award for which they are applying before signing this declaration. The signed declaration is the applicant s acknowledgement that they understand and agree to be bound by the conditions under which the award is made. h. MESNZ would like to keep in touch with the successful applicants as they progress through university and may call on them for a short report (approximately 200 words) once a year. i. The selection panel has the discretion not to award a scholarship if the applications received are not considered to be at a sufficient standard. j. Should you be judged a winner, prior to any funds being paid out, a copy of your confirmation of enrolment at your chosen tertiary institution, needs to be forwarded to MESNZ (scan to pdf and email is probably best send to MESNZ@IPENZ.org.nz ), but it can be posted to the original application address. Entrants for this scholarship accept that the panel s decisions are final and that no correspondence will be entered into.
