Flintshire Local Health Board Who are we? On 1st April 2003, Health Authorities in Wales were abolished and 22 Local Health Boards (LHBs) were established. As a Local Health Board, we are responsible for planning what health services our population needs and then commissioning local hospitals, family doctors (GPs), Dentists, Pharmacists, Opticians and others to provide services. The LHB covers exactly the same area as Flintshire County Council (the Local Authority) and this allows much closer working between the NHS and the council, which is important for planning programmes for health and well-being. The LHB and Council have a statutory duty to work together, in partnership with other local organisations such as Social Services, the Community Health Council and voluntary services, to produce strategies for improving health, well-being and social care for the people of Flintshire. The LHB will also work closely with you to discuss and listen to your views about changes to local health services. Your guide to local health services This booklet has been produced by Flintshire Local Health Board as a guide to local health services in the Flintshire area. It provides you with information on how to access local health services such as GPs, Dentists, Pharmacists and Opticians, as well as contact details for the local hospitals in the area. 2

It also provides you with information on how you can share your views and help to influence change locally. Your local hospital will also produce a guide which will give information about outpatient and inpatient services, hospital facilities, telephone numbers and discharge arrangements. NHS Direct Wales 0845 4647 NHS Direct Wales is a telephone service, provided by nurses, giving confidential healthcare advice and information 24 hours a day. Nurses and Health Information Advisers can advise on what to do if you are ill, you have health concerns about someone close to you, or you need information about local health services. As well as providing confidential health advice, NHS Direct Wales can also provide information on: late night dental services self - help & support groups organ, blood and tissue donations If you have access to the internet, you can find their website at: www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk Accident and Emergencies (A&E) A&E departments are for people who have had an accident or a sudden illness (something which has got much worse in the last 24 hours). There is an A&E department at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital (01978 291100), Glan Clwyd Hospital (01745 583910) and the Countess of Chester Hospital (01244 365000). 3

Minor Injury departments are also available at Flint community Hospital (open from 8am to 8pm, 7 days per week), Holywell Community Hospital (open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week) and Mold Community Hospital (open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week). The telephone numbers for these hospitals can be found under the useful telephone numbers section of this booklet. In the event of a serious injury, accident or medical emergency, you should call 999 without delay. Do remember though that the Ambulance Service should be used appropriately and unnecessary calls place an extra burden on ambulance crews. How do I register with a GP? Contact the Doctor of your choice (a full list of Doctors in the Flintshire area can be found further on in this booklet) If this Doctor is unable to register you, try other Doctors in your area If you are finding it difficult to register with a Doctor in your area, then write to the following address and request that your name be allocated to the list of a local Doctor: Patient Data Department Business Services Centre Preswylfa Hendy Road Mold CH7 1PZ 4

Ask your Pharmacist From sprains to stomach upsets, Pharmacists are qualified to give you expert advice without an appointment. As most people know, antibiotics don t work on colds and other viral infections. However, you can get plenty of advice from your Pharmacist about over the counter medicines that can help to relieve your symptoms. A full list of Pharmacies in the Flintshire area can be found further on in this booklet. How can I access a GP outside normal surgery hours? If you require a Doctor outside normal surgery hours, you should telephone your practice and an answer phone message will direct you to the out of hours service provided. Where can I get my prescription dispensed outside normal opening hours? Most Pharmacies are open for all or part of Saturdays and operate a rota system for Sundays, Bank Holidays and evenings. Your local Pharmacy will have a notice in their window directing you to those Pharmacies available during these periods, alternatively, contact NHS Direct Wales information. Local newspapers will also have details of those Pharmacies who are open. 5

How can I register with a Dentist for NHS treatment? For details of Dentists currently accepting new NHS patients in your area, contact the Dental Helpline on 07000 780377 or NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47. Alternatively, contact the LHB on 01352 700227 for information and advice. How do I access emergency dental services? If you are a registered NHS patient, ring your own Dentist. If not, telephone NHS Direct for information and advice. How can I get an eye test? It is easy to have an eye test done. You do not need to register, you can simply ask any Optician for an appointment. A full list of Opticians in the Flintshire area can be found further on in this booklet. Primary care services The following section provides the names, addresses and telephone numbers of Doctors, Dentists, Pharmacies and Opticians in the Flintshire area, by town. If you need any further information, such as opening times, please contact the practices direct. Names in Bold denote a Female Doctor or Dentist. 6

Other local services Social Care Social Care (sometimes called Social Services) is provided by local councils and can help people with support for individuals, children and families. In Flintshire, social care is provided by Flintshire County Council, County Hall, Mold, CH7 6NB. For Adult Social Care telephone 01352 702642. For Children s Services telephone 01352 701000. (www.flintshire.gov.uk). Community Directory The Community Directory is a joint venture between Flintshire Local Voluntary Council and Flintshire County Council s Library and Information Service. Its aim is to provide a comprehensive, up to date, county wide information service about voluntary/community groups, societies, clubs and other agencies. Access to the directory is available on line at www.flintshire.gov.uk/community Breast Test Wales Breast Test Wales offers screening by mammography every three years to women aged 50 plus who reside in Wales and are registered with a National Health Service family doctor (GP). Women aged 50 to 64 are sent postal invitations for breast screening every three years when Breast Test Wales is in their area. For more information, call 01492 860888 or access the Breast Test Wales website at: www.velindre-tr.wales.nhs.uk/btw 22

Cervical Screening Wales Cervical smear tests are carried out as part of a national NHS cervical screening programme, which is organised in Wales by Cervical Screening Wales. Cervical screening is not a test for cancer. It detects possible abnormalities, or changes in the cells, which may develop into cancer if they are not treated. Almost all abnormalities detected by screening are successfully treated. Invitations for screening are sent out at three-yearly intervals to all women in Wales between the ages of 20 and 64. You can choose to have the test done at your own doctor's (GP) clinic or at your local Well Woman or Family Planning Clinic. Telephone numbers of local Well Woman and Family Planning Clinics can be found under the useful telephone numbers section of this booklet. For further information on cervical screening call 01352 700227 or access the Cervical Screening Wales website at: www.velindre-tr.wales.nhs.uk/csw Smoking Cessation Service A free service is available in Flintshire for anyone who wants help with giving up smoking. Venues are at Connahs Quay, Mold, Buckley and Deeside Community Hospital. You can refer yourself to the service or you can be referred by your practice nurse or doctor. You can be seen individually or in a group session. The smoking clinic can run up to 6 weeks depending on your needs. For further information, call Wendy Powell, Smoking Cessation Administrator on 01352 700227 extension 4128. 23

Community Services Therapy Services (Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Speech & Language Therapy and Dietetics) are provided through your local NHS Trust. Your GP will refer you if you require these services. Your GP surgery can also provide you with information on Health Visitors, District Nurses, Child Health and School Doctor services in your area. Clwyd Community Health Council Clwyd Community Health Council (CHC) covers the County Council areas of Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham. The CHC help and advise people who wish to make complaints about NHS services and can offer information about health and other related services in the area. The LHB must consult the CHC about proposed changes to health services in the area and they, in turn, will consult the public to ensure that the public s views are properly reflected. The CHC can be contacted at: Clwyd Community Health Council Cartrefle Cefn Road Wrexham LL13 9NH For more information call 01978 356178 or visit the CHC s website at: www.wales.nhs.uk/chc/home.cfm?orgid=222 24

How can I get involved? What you think of your NHS is important. We can t make changes for the better without your help. We need to know what works, what doesn t and how best to fix problems for you and your family. Fortunately, there are more ways than ever before to make your voice heard. Why don t you Ask about the patient or user groups at your local hospital or GP practice? Fill in a patient satisfaction survey form, if asked to do so? Contact the LHB on 01352 700227 for more information Everyone needs a "pal". As a patient, carer or relative, you may need someone to turn to for on-the-spot help, advice and support.
