Provenance: Created and collected by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Processing: The collection was processed and arranged in 2013. Conservation Work: Staples removed, some papers unfolded. Restrictions: The collection is available for research only in the BIC Archives Scope and Content Note The Sisters of Notre Dame were invited to begin teaching children at Saints Peter and Paul Church in South Boston in September of 1860. A convent on Broadway Street was readied for them that year. Because of the enormous number of applicants, the rector was forced to limit admission to children between the ages of twelve and sixteen. However, the continued interest of families in the school brought about the construction of a new building that opened in September of 1862, with room for eight hundred children. The continued rise of Catholic immigrants brought about a new parish the Gate of Heaven which was established in 1863. The Sisters of Notre Dame taught there between 1863 and 1878. In 1880, the Sisters of the Broadway Street convent were asked to also teach at St. James School on Albany Street. They remained at St. James until the school closed in 1927. A decade later, in 1938, Saints Peter and Paul closed due to financial constraints. There was great interest in reopening the school, however, and between 1941 and 1945 new students were enrolled in the ninth grade. In 1945, the first students of the new school graduated. This new school was initially named Archbishop Cushing Central High School after the Boston archbishop and later became the Cardinal Cushing Central High School. The school remained open until 1992. After CCCH closed, the Sisters of Notre Dame wanted to maintain an educational presence in the community and they opened the Notre Dame Education Center. In addition to the Broadway Street Convent, the rise in population of Catholic immigrants in South Boston during the late 19 th century caused the pastor of St. Augustine s Church to invite the Sisters to teach at the parish school in 1895. That year, a new convent on E Street in South Boston was opened for the Sisters of Notre Dame and they began teaching at the new school. The South Boston School Records include convent annals and journals for both the Broadway Street Convent and the E Street Convent. They also contain financial accounts, registers of the Sisters living at the convents and vow renewal records. Records for Saints Peter and Paul are limited to school registers between 1890 and 1935, as well as school alumni records from 1928 to 1954. The only records of St. James School are registers of students between 1889 and 1915. Records for CCCH include programs, photographs of events and anniversary celebrations, yearbooks, news clippings and newsletters published by the students between 1984 and 1990. Also filed here is the

1987 evaluation of the school and board meeting minutes during the process of closing the school in 1992. After the closing of CCCH, the Sisters of Notre Dame opened the Notre Dame Education Center. Papers for this collection include minutes from board meetings, budgets, correspondence, newsletters, clippings, published stories of student lives and records for two of their projects, the Notre Dame Montessori School and the Julie Family Learning Center. Papers for the St. Augustine School include those documenting events, admissions records, First Communion Registers, Class registers and photographs of the school, convent and graduating classes between 1908 and 1934.
