WELCOME MESSAGE BY EWOG-MDS CHAIR Dear Colleagues, Over e past years, e clinical and molecular insight in e contuining spectrum of pediatric bone marrow failure, myelodysplastic syndromes as well as juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia has improved considerably. Wiin EWOG, such progress was accelerated by international registration and collaboration on a Eurpean level, which set e scene for furer global collaboration. We are proud to present is interesting symposium, to be hosted by Prof. Dr. Starý and collegues in Prague and hope at it will furer contribute to e distribution of e knowledge of ese rare hematological diseases in children, ultimately leading to more effective treatment strategies and subsequent enhanced (quality of) survival. Marry M. van den Heuvel-Eibrink Chair EWOG-MDS WELCOME MESSAGE FROM LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITEE CHAIR It is my pleasure to invite you to Prague venue of e 6 International Symposium on Childhood MDS and Bone Marrow Failure syndromes. Previous symposia organized between 1996 and 2009 in Titisee, Funen, Stresa, Freiburg and Rotterdam reflected enormous progress achieved during e last 20 years in e understanding of childhood MDS and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia. Uniform attitude to e diagnosis and erapy based on common database practised by EWOG-MDS from e half of 1990s increased our knowledge of e epidemiology and biology of ese rare disorders. Progress in diagnostics enabled better differentiation of MDS from congenital and acquired bone marrow failures and AML. These achievements were included into WHO classification 2008. Remarkable improvement of prognosis has been achieved by early indication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation using uniform conditioning regimen and GVHD prophylaxis. Anoer important step in European collaboration was recent establishement of e EWOG- SAA group. I have no doubts at symposium in Prague will show furer progress in research and clinical practice achieved since e last symposium in Rotterdam 2009. Come to Prague and enjoy bo scientific meeting and beauties of e historical capital of e Czech Republic! Looking forward to your visit Jan Starý on behalf of e Local Organizing Committee www.ewogmds2012.org 2
