Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering in the 21st Century 17th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference BETHESDA NORTH MARRIOTT HOTEL & CONFERENCE CENTER BETHESDA, MARYLAND, USA
The ACS Green Chemistry Institute Green chemistry is the design, development, and implementation of chemical products and processes to reduce or eliminate the use and generation of substances hazardous to human health and the environment. Devoted to promoting and advancing green chemistry, it is the mission of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute (ACS GCI) to catalyze and enable the implementation of green chemistry and engineering throughout the global chemical enterprise. To achieve that goal, ACS GCI proudly welcomes you to the 16th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering (GC&E) Conference. Presenters and attendees at this year s conference will identify and discuss technical advances in green chemistry and engineering as solutions to some of humanity s most pressing challenges. It is abundantly clear we cannot meet the needs of an expanding global population and rising standard of living in a sustainable manner via a linear extension of our existing technology platforms. That leads to questioning what we can do differently and exploring the answers found in the use of green chemistry. By applying the proven principles of green chemistry, we can: Design safer chemicals and processes to make them Sustainably feed a growing population Ensure safe and abundant drinking water Reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and the use of nonrenewable fuel sources Develop bio-based raw materials from non-food sources Improve environmental decision making Measure progress toward sustainability We at the ACS Green Chemistry Institute are thrilled to welcome your participation as we work together in advancing the solutions to these significant global challenges. Welcome On behalf of the 2012 organizing committee, welcome to Washington, D.C., the nation s capital, and the 16th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference. This year s conference theme, Innovation, Jobs, Sustainability The Role of Green Chemistry, reflects our belief that green chemistry and engineering hold the key to a sustainable future and can play a vital role in reinvigorating the global economy. We are again delighted to partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to recognize the 2012 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award winners on Monday night during the Welcome Reception. This year s event will be the first time we incorporate award winner recognition into the reception so everyone may share in the acknowledgement and congratulations these leaders deserve. As our annual conference continues to evolve, we have again expanded our offering to include a host of new and exciting program additions: At our first business plan competition, finalists will present their plans to a panel of judges on Tuesday morning, and the winner will be announced during Wednesday s Keynote Session. The ACS GCI will take advantage of the latest trend in conferences the hybrid session: merging the traditional in-person session with the benefits of virtual participation. The Wednesday morning panel session features world-renowned experts on green chemistry and sustainability, and will be streamed live so attendees from around the globe can participate in the discussion. Finally, we have added an ACS Careers Workshops for all attendees. With the variety of topics presented, we are confident you will find a powerful program to capture your imagination and curiosity. An all-day student workshop will be held following the conference to provide under-graduate, graduate and post-graduate students hands-on learning and engagement with some of the inspiring champions of green chemistry. 2 17th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering in the 21st Century 3
