Statements & Search Criteria Mission Protecting wildlife through field research, education and habitat conservation. Background The Observatory was founded as a nonprofit in 1994 to continue and to enhance the work of volunteers at the Kiptopeke Songbird Station and to tie together several other related programs to ensure their survival. A dedicated Board was established and a corps of advisors was established to provide professional guidance. In addition to public education at our sites, programs conduct research on migratory songbirds, hawks, owls and butterflies. Impact Accomplishments: 1.completed 3-month songbird banding seasons Spring and Fall 2.completed 3-month hawkwatches Spring and Fall 3.completed 3-month hawk banding in Fall 4.completed 6-week Monarch butterfly migration program in Fall 5.made daily, free presentations about our work to visitors Major Goals for 2013 are the same as above accomplishments. Needs Due to the economic downturn, memberships and other donations are down for the past three years; our small investment "nest egg" has not earned money and the organization had to take money from its "nest egg" to make the regular budget for two years in a row. We also regularly need volunteer help, but have a great network for finding and training volunteers. CEO/Executive Director Statement The Observatory operates the second-longest running songbird banding station in rth America, providing valuable long-term monitoring about migratory birds, their health and their habitats. In addition, we believe that the Observatory's unique, on-site education and website materials reach more people, including schools, about the importance of such issues, than any other Virginia organization. Board Chair Statement Little did I know in 1975, when I visited the Kiptopeke Songbird Banding Station as a beginning birder, that I would still be involved with it 38 years later. I was the founding Vice-President in 1994 and am the second President, serving since 2002. We had hoped to raise enough money for a Director and an office, in addition to hiring biologists to do the bird work, but that has proven to be a big challenge and we have only been able hire the biologists, and purchase necessary equipment. However, the Observatory is very lucky that several of us perform daily tasks and provide out-of-pocket money where we can. We are also lucky to have a dedicated volunteer corps to assist the biologists. We have made our budget for the first 16 years and have struggled over the past two years and now, unless funds can be raised from some new sources, we are faced with program cuts for the first time. We conduct a great team birding competition each September, called "The Kiptopeke Challenge," with sponsors encouraging the teams to find as many birds in one day as possible, while raising awareness and money. Many species of birds are facing severe population declines. I have no plans to ever leave the organization. Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas Other Hampton Roads Tri-cities Region 2

However, it is mainly in-kind assistance and the challenge is in fundraising in the recent difficult climate of the economic downturn. We have memberships, we apply for grants and conduct a yearly fundraiser...a team birding competition each September. We have joined Facebook for greater exposure. Since the Board and Team Leaders are all volunteers, we have small operating overhead and can turn donations directly into salaries for biologists to conduct scientific research and public education. 6
