Student Renan Torres e Silva - Undergraduate * Thamires Bragança Florido Ferreira Undergraduate Victor Leite Dias - Undergraduate * Introduction: The UERJ SEG Student Chapter was established in May, 2016, and it is composed of undergraduate and graduate students from the Rio de Janeiro State University. The objective of this student chapter is to unite students with a common interest economic geology and to gather them with professionals in order to enhance students knowledge in this field. In addition, the chapter encourages the members of the faculty to be more interested in this field of geology, since most of them have no familiarity with it. In this report we present a summary of the Student Chapter s activities and how the meetings happened so far. Meetings and Activities Since our chapter was officially formed and approved by the SEG Committee, the UERJ SEG Student Chapter s members have tried to meet rigorously every month to discuss our possible activities for the year. Those meetings were held at the State University of Rio de Janeiro with the help of our advisors. During the period between 2016 2017 our university went through a strike that made it difficult for the students to meet every month. The scholar schedule was constantly changing, affecting field trips, and exams. Yet, we always put some effort to make our best, no matter the situation. 2

1.1. Minerals in Grains Short-course As for the first activity held by the Student Chapter in November 30th, 2016, we welcomed two home professors, Ronaldo Mello Pereira e Marcelo Salomão, who belong to the Department of Applied Geology. They gave us a short-course named Minerals in Grains. The short course was divided in theory classes and practice classes with the use of a microscope. The short-course had 10 spots, and counted with students, and professors. The event was very successful and met our perspectives. Image 1: Brochure of the short-course 1.2. I Workshop of Economic Geology SEG UERJ As the second activity we did a 3-day Workshop consisting in 6 lectures and 2 shortcourses. The Workshop named as I Workshop of Economic Geology SEG UERJ happened in June 12 th, 13 th and 14 th, between 8AM and 5:30PM, at the Rio de Janeiro State University Auditorium. The workshop counted with different names of different areas, trying to be as comprehensive as possible within the scope of economic geology. The members of the Student Chapter had also the pleasure to be in contact with people from industry, being able to know better the economic geologist work, and to do some networking. 3

One of the most interesting lectures in the Workshop was the lecture of the geologist Breno dos Santos, who we were very pleased to meet. He was one of the geologists responsible for the discovery of the Carajás Province, a province located at the state of Pará, north of Brazil. He shared with us his experience in the Carajás Province in a very touching lecture, showing us all the steps that happen since the beginning of the discovery. Doing this workshop was an amazing experience for the students members as well as bringing a lot of knowledge to everyone. We are planning on doing this workshop every year. 1.3. Geology Academic Weekend Besides the lectures and short-courses, in a partnership with the Academic Center of the Faculty of Geology of the Rio de Janeiro State University, the UERJ SEG Student Chapter proposed to assist in the organization of the Geology Academic Week of UERJ. The Student Chapter agreed in helping them with names for lectures related to Economic Geology and related areas. 1.4. 1-day Field trip to Veloso s Mine During the Geology Students National Meeting, which happened at Ipoema - Minas Gerais in July 2017, some of the UERJ SEG Student Chapter members had the opportunity to visit the Veloso's Mine, a disabled gold mine in Ouro Preto - MG, Brazil. The students had the chance to examine the technical aspects of work, which was made by African slaves whose knowledge about mining were more advanced than the Portuguese ones. It's more than 400m of galleries, but the students were only allowed to visit a small stretch one because of time. Although rare, It's still to find some gold in there. Image 7: The entrace of the mine. 6

Image 8: Karla* and Thamires* (above), Matheus*, Bruna and Flávia (below). * UERJ SEG Student Chapter members. 1.5. Field trip to Carajás Province One of the most interesting activities of the Student Chapter was sending one member to a week-field trip to the Carajás Province sponsored by ADIMB. The UERJ SEG Student Chapter was represented by the student Tayla Werneck. They visited some mines that belongs to Vale S.A, and they also had the pleasure to know a bit more about the procedures that happen inside a mine. After the field trip, Tayla gave us a lecture about it, showing some pictures, and also shared some samples with the group. The field trip was extremely enriching for her professional qualification. 7

Image 9: Tayla during her lecture, and the group after her lecture. 1.6. ArcGis Short-course On August 18 th, 2017, the Jr. Geologist ans Msc. Student Otto Vaz gave a 1-day shortcourse about ArcGis to some of our members who didn t know how to use the software, and taught them the importance of knowing how to use a GIS software to do geological maps. They learned the main tools, concepts and did some practical exercises about it. The sort-course was a success. Future Plans The UERJ SEG Student chapter plans to continue the regular meetings every month, and to organize either a lecture or a short-course for both student members and the public at least once a month. For short courses, the Student Chapter intends to provide to the members a shortcourse using the software Leapfrog, with the objective to show student what is this software, what it can do, and how it could help us in our student/professional life. Moreover, we would like to continue with the ArcGis training; now learning more advanced tools that can be used in the minning industry. 8

For lectures, we want to promote the II Workshop of Economic Geology SEG UERJ, bringing new themes, new professionals that would enhance our knowledge. The first one was a success, so we want to continue it. In addition to that, we would like to promote more debates between the members encouraging them to always be up to date with the mining news, once there is a lot going on in Brazil in the mining area. We also want to bring new speakers with interesting themes. Besides that, the chapter is planning a field trip to Minas Gerais in a partnership to other SEG Student Chapters from there. The first contact has been already done. Other field trips to mines in Rio de Janeiro are also always in our perspectives. During the next year, we are open for any other ideas that our members or advisors have and to have any other student that want to join us in the Student Chapter. 9
