The service will address barriers to accessing healthcare and enhance timely access to appropriate care, as well as promote practices that encourage participation in health care both for the woman and her whanau. The service will provide information and education to the Māori community about the importance of antenatal care and pregnancy support. The service will support WDHB maternity services to increase awareness of Tikanga Māori in relation to pregnancy and childbirth. KEY TASKS Provide advice and support for pregnant and postpartum Māori women living in Waitemata District. Enhance timely access to appropriate women s health care Promote healthy lifestyle choices for Māori women and their whanau. Provide information and education to the Māori community about the importance of antenatal care and pregnancy support. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Referrals will be accepted from both maternity and primary health practitioners to educate women about the importance of maternity care and provide advice on accessing a lead maternity carer. Offer specific tikanga support for women who have complications during pregnancy and are required to make complex decisions regarding care options Provide tikanga specific support in the event of an adverse outcome, specifically stillbirth or neonatal death Document support and education provided and liaise appropriately with other members of the health care team Promote the value of maternity care to the Māori community through key community Māori networks Encourage early access to maternity care. Provide links between Māori women, their whanau, Māori primary health care, and lead maternity carers. Assist if barriers to access are identified, such as transport difficulties by providing transport Audit late presentations and DNAs to increase knowledge around trends Provide support for Breastfeeding and Baby Friendly initiatives Provide support for Smokefree services Provide support for family violence screening Provide support for tikanga specific education and information to women and their whanau. Engage with Māori networks in the community to promote the importance of appropriate maternity care. Recognise Individual Responsibility for Workplace Health and Safety under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 EXPECTED OUTCOMES Review policies and guidelines to ensure that tikanga is maintained and that they are consistent with the needs of the Māori community. Attend key meetings to ensure that a Māori perspective is represented and multidisciplinary collaboration is occurring e.g. Child Protection, Family Violence Intervention Māori Kaitiaki Group, mental health liaison, consumer feedback, maternity forum, breastfeeding action group meetings, unit meetings and team meetings.
