NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY 2016-2017 CHAPTER BY-LAWS CENTENNIAL MIDDLE SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS TO BELONG TO THE CENTENNIAL CHAPTER: A. Maintain a 3.85 grade point average, or higher, each quarter. B. Demonstrate character, leadership and service - the characteristics by which you were selected. C. Participate in club fundraisers. D. Participate in club service projects. E. Complete minimum requirements for individual service each school year. F. Attend all meetings. One excused missed meeting per year is allowed to qualify for the endof-year service award. CONSEQUENCES FOR BREAKING THE CHAPTER BY-LAWS: A. FAILURE TO MAINTAIN GRADE POINT AVERAGE: 1st Time: Automatic probation a minimum of one quarter. A letter will be sent home to notify your parents. 2nd Time: Academic Probation for the remainder of the year. A letter will be sent home to notify your parents. A check will be made to ensure the cumulative GPA for the first (3) quarters is at minimum a 3.8. B. FAILURE TO DEMONSTRATE CHARACTER: 1st offense: Written warning and/or probation. 2nd offense: Letter of probation/dismissal depending on the infraction. 3rd offense: Dismissal depending on the infraction. C. PROBATION: Probation is effective for nine weeks from the date of the probation letter. Members on probation are still required to participate in all NJHS meetings, individual service hour commitments, and group service projects. D. DISMISSAL The student who is notified of dismissal is required to appear before the advisor, principal and/or 8th grade administrator, and a member of the Faculty Council at which time the student may give an explanation. Parents may accompany a student to this hearing. Any student dismissed from NJHS may never be a member of another chapter.
INDUCTION FEE: A yearly fee of $25.00 is a necessity to maintain NJHS costs for such events as our annual Induction Ceremony and chapter t-shirts. The Centennial chapter of NJHS strives to have members pay for as little as possible for participation in our honorary. B. The fee is considered a tax credit donation. SERVICE PROJECTS: A. All members will be required to complete 16 hours of individual service hours to the school and/or community during the school year. Completing individual service hours is in addition to any service projects that the organization does as a whole chapter. B. Parent(s) are encouraged to sponsor or assist with service projects. Students participating in service projects are expected to behave as they would at a school function and to follow directions set by teachers or parents/sponsors. CLUB MEETINGS & ACTIVITIES: A. Members are expected to attend all meetings. One excused missed meeting per year is allowed to qualify for the end-of-the-year service award. B. Teambuilding events will be offered to provide NJHS members an opportunity to focus on teamwork, citizenship, leadership, and character.
