Community & Workforce Education (CWE) FAQs Are there any special requirements to register for CWE classes? Most CWE classes do not have any special requirements. Simply register and attend class! The exceptions to that are the Health Careers classes which require you to register in person. How do I pay for classes? Payment is due upon registration. Walk-in registrants may pay in person with cash, check or credit card. Students who fax or email their registration should include credit card payment information on the form. Registration forms can be found online at www.hillcollege.edu/cwe. When should I register? Registration for CWE classes begins when classes are published in print or online. Registration continues until the first day of the class or until the class fills. Health career students must attend an orientation prior to registration. Early registration is encouraged as some classes fill quickly. How are CWE classes different than credit classes? CWE classes differ in four primary ways: First, while some classes may have some requirements to fulfill prior to registering, you do not have to apply to the college in order to enroll. Second, our classes start throughout the year, rather than at set times during a college semester. Third, our classes are generally fast-track, meaning that they are shorter in length in order to accommodate your schedule and your need for skills you can use immediately. Finally, you will not receive a grade for the class, but for classes that you successfully complete, you will receive a certificate of completion. For classes geared toward workforce development, you will be awarded Continuing Education Units (CEUs). What is a CEU? A CEU (Continuing Education Unit) is 10 contact hours of participation in an organized, non-credit continuing education experience. Therefore, one CEU is awarded for every 10 hours of training completed. Is funding available? CWE classes do not qualify for federal financial aid. However, Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) monies are available for some Health Careers programs. To qualify, students must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Students must also provide a sealed, official high school and/or college transcript or an official GED record to the Student Information Services office. See page 16 in this schedule or contact the CWE office for more information. Programs in this schedule that qualify for such funds are marked TPEG Eligible. How am I notified if a class is cancelled? There are two primary ways by phone and by email. Therefore, it is very important that in filling out your registration form, you list a current phone number and email that you check frequently. What about a refund for a class that cancels or that I do not attend? For classes/programs cancelled by the College: 100 percent refund. For student drops of individual classes: 100 percent refund if the Drop Form is received by CWE two or more business days prior to class start, no refunds thereafter. For student drops of programs requiring multiple course enrollments: 100 percent refund on all classes if the Drop Form is received two or more business days prior to the start of the first class. After the start of the first class, no refund on the first class and 75 percent refund on any remaining classes in the program, provided the Drop Form is received on or before the third meeting day of the first class. What if there is inclement weather? In the event of inclement weather, visit the Hill College website at www.hillcollege.edu for closure information. What about parking? Students will receive a temporary parking pass on the first day of class. You can pick it up in the Community and Workforce Education Office. Age 65 and Older Tuition Exemption: Texas residents age 65 or older are exempt from tuition for Community and Workforce Education classes provided the request is made in person prior to the start of class. Students will be responsible for any required books, materials or applicable fees. This discount is allowed on a space-available basis in classes that make with paying students. This free workshop will provide vital tips to showcase your qualifications in a way to grab potential employers attention. This one-hour workshop is ideal for health career students who have successfully completed their licensing or certification tests. - Upon Request Certified Nurse Aide Program (112 hours/$635) 11.2 CEUs The Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Certificate is a 112-hour program that provides the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Students are also prepared for the state certification exam for certified nurse aide offered by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). The program consists of 72 hours of lecture, and 40 hours of clinical activity in a long-term care facility. Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared for entry-level employment in long-term care facilities, doctor s offices and hospitals. The clinical hours are included in the cost of the program. Students must register in all the classes below upon program entry. The courses make up the required curriculum for the basic certificate in Massage Therapy. This curriculum is regulated by Texas Occupational Code 455, and is administrated by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The clinical hours are included in the cost of the program. Certified Medication Aide Program (142 hours/$590) 14.2 CEUs The Certified Medication Aide program is a state regulated training and certification program that prepares Certified Nurse Aides to administer medications in a long-term care setting. Students receive instruction and training in the preparation and administration of medications; observe, report, and document resident s status; review principles of safety; and demonstrate knowledge of measurement systems, body systems, and common diseases. Upon completion of the exam, students will prepare for the state examination through the Texas Department of Disability and Aging Services (DADS). The program consists of 130 hours of classroom instruction with 12 hours of clinical application in a long-term care center environment. The clinical hours are included in the cost of the program. Certified Medication Aide Update (7 hours/$56).7 CEUs Upon completion of the Certified Medication Aide program, each permit holder is responsible for renewing their permit before the expiration date. A permit holder must complete a seven clock-hour continuing education program approved by DADS prior to expiration of the permit in order to renew the permit. NURA 1041 Medication Aid Update Excludes Holidays JCC 10/19/17 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Thurs. Certified Pharmacy Technician Program (272 hours/$1,187) 27.2 CEUs Program prepares individuals for entry-level jobs as a Pharmacy Technician in retail and institutional settings. Students will learn to prepare prescription orders under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, perform applicable pharmacy calculations, and comply with federal and state regulatory agency laws and regulations. Upon completion of this program students will be able to perform all the duties required in any pharmacy practice setting. Students are also prepared to take the certification exam offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). The program consists of 152 hours of lecture/lab on dates given below, followed by a 120 hour internship in a local pharmacy setting after completion of class/ lab. Clinical Rotation: Dates and Times based on facility Phlebotomy Technician Program (192 hours/$635) 18 CEUs Phlebotomy is the practice of obtaining blood for testing purposes. This program is an in-depth study of phlebotomy and the related skills required by the phlebotomist to function in the healthcare setting. Students will complete 180 hours of course work in order to prepare for the national certification exam through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) which the student will be certified as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. This program consists of 72 hours of lecture and 120 hours of clinical activities in a hospital and lab environment. The clinical hours are included in the cost of the program. Topics include drop flowers, flower decorations, writing, sugar molds, roses, and seasonal cakes. Identify equipment needed to decorate cakes; prepare a cake for icing; prepare various icings and ice a cake; demonstrate various border and garland decorations; demonstrate

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) offers Skills for Small Business (SSB) training grants for businesses that employ fewer than 100 employees. Skills for Small Business emphasizes training newly hired employees, those who have been hired by the business up to 12 months prior to the date that TWC receives a grant application. The program pays up to $1,800 for each new employee being trained and $900 for existing employees per 12-month period. Funding for training is for full-time employees. All training must be provided by a public community or technical college, or the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). No third-party vendor training is allowed. Training must be selected from active course catalogs/ schedules credit, continuing education, online or other available unpublished courses. Employers must pay the prevailing wages in the local labor market for the trainees funded under the grant.
