Overview s Spine Institute is pleased to host the fifth annual Spine Symposium. The Spine Symposium is an educational conference specifically designed for Registered Nurses to enhance learning s about new research, improved care processes and cutting edge technology in order to provide optimal management for the spine patient. The Spine Institute treats more than 4,000 patients annually from around the world and performs one of the largest number of spine procedures in the United States each year. We are a Center of Excellence and dedicated to the comprehensive management of spinal conditions. Abbott Northwestern is cited yearly in US News & World Report as one of the nation s best hospitals in neurology, neurosurgery and orthopedics, including spine and spinal surgery. In addition, the Spine Institute received the Blue Cross Center for Distinction Award. This breadth of experience and expertise contributes to our national and international reputation as a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of spine-related disorders. target audience Advance practice nurses, nurses, case managers, and other health care professionals who would like to build or update their knowledge in the care of patients with spinal disease. OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the symposium, participants should be able to: Identify new technologies used for the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders and discuss current research findings to support the use of differing treatments in spine care. Describe anatomical positions and features of the spine, explain the movement of spinal joints and common spine pathologies and define common medical terms. Recognize and understand post-op complications common to spine surgery and nursing management for these complications. Identify 2-4 strategies for successfully dealing with chronic pain patients underlying issues related to chronic pain and the challenges of caring for chronic pain patients. Identify integrative medicine techniques used on post-operative spine patients and when these treatments should be implemented. Understand indications for post-op/non-operative orthotic treatment and understand application and wearing parameters for post op brace wear. Explain the assessment of patients that present with back and neck pain and discuss spinal injuries resulting from sports activities and trauma, their non-operative treatments as well as preventative measures. Understand when is the best time to refer a patient to a chiropractor/ acupuncturist and why. Also identify the best conditions to refer to a chiropractor. Identify methods and equipment to consider when assisting a patient s ability to move and understand how using safe patient moving equipment is not contradictory to a patient s rehabilitation.
